(Cl. 33-190) This invention relates to a device for locating, measuring and placing bound buttonholes and pockets on various garments, and has for an object to provide a simple and .effective means which may be used to easily and quickly locate and determine the size of the buttonholes, and also determine the location of the buttonholes on the garment both with respect to the edge of the garment and with respect to each other.
It is also an object to provide such -a device which will uniformly locate the buttonholes and insure the holes will be the uniform size.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, I have devised the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification. It is, however, to be understood the invention is not limited to the specific details of construction and arrangement shown, but may embody various changes and modifications Within thescope of the invention.

It is diicult with the present devices to locate socalled bound buttonholes at uniform distances from and at right angles to the edge of a garment, and also to insure that the buttonholes so formed will be of a uniform length, and it is therefore an object of this device to obviate these difficulties and not only insure that the buttonholes are properly and uniformly located, but that they will also be of uniform size, and that the operations of locating and determining the size of these buttonholes will be easily and quickly performed, thus producing a better garment in less time and at less cost.
The device as shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive comprises a base structure 10 including `a T-shaped rmember 11 cooperating with a locating member 12 adjustably mounted on the first member, the T-shaped member 11 including an elongated longitudinal stem 13V and a cross head 14 at one end thereof and at right angles to the portion 13. The member 12 is mounted for longitudinal and pivotal adjustment on the portion 13 for properly locating at different distances from the locating means on the member 14, and for positioning in a position to extend either longitudinally of the member 13 or at right angles thereto, for purposes presently to be described. This base structure has at one end means for locating the edge of Ia garment in which the buttonholes are to be formed, and in this form of the device the transverse substantially on line illustrating further steps in Y 2,844,883 Patented July 29, sv
head 14 is an angularly shaped member in cross section, including an upright ange 15 extending longitudinally, of the head portion 14 at the upper or outer edge thereof and therefore extending at right angles to the body portion 13 and at right angles to the parallel lateral edges 16 and 17 of the portion 13. The members 11 and 12 may be of any suitable material, but Vare preferably of suitable plastic, either transparent or of different colors as desired.
The member 12 is pivotally connected to the base portion 13 for positioning in different angular positions thereon and is also mounted for longitudinal adjustment to different longitudinal positions on the member 13. Any suitable connecting and mounting means for,` the member 12 may be used, but a simple and effective means is that shown, V.comprising a longitudinal slot 18 in this member, preferably on the longitudinal center line thereof, and with a channel 19 in the lower side of the portion 13 of somewhat greater width than the slot 18 to provide a guide passage for the head 20 of a securing screw 21 passing through the slot andthe member 12 adjacent one end thereof, and on which is threaded a clamping screw 22 for clamping and holding the member 12 in different longitudinal positions on the member 11. It is preferred that the portion 13 be calibrated, preferably along one side edge, as indicated at 23, to assist in locating the member 12 at the desired proper distance from the inner side 24 of the flange 15, which inner side 24 comprises a transversely extending locating means for one edge ofthe garment at one end of the base structure.
The locating means for the buttonholescomprises a series of upright pinscarried by the base structure` and by both members 11 and 12. Located in the cross member 14 is a pair of spaced'upright pins 25 located on the longitudinal center line of the portion 13 and spaced back- Wardly any suitable distance from the transverse locating means 24. This transverse head portion 14 may also be provided with other pairsof laterally spaced similar pins 26 located adjacent the opposite ends thereof and at given distances from the pins 25 to correspond with spacing` of buttonholes to be made in the garment, and the longitudibie described.
On the member 12 are located a plurality of pairs ofl upright pins located at different given distances from the free ends of this member and also the oppositeY side edges thereof and therefore the opposite side edges of the portion 13, as the member 12 is'preferably of the same width as the portion 13 of the T-shaped member. These pins, as shown, are located in pairs 27, 28, 29 and 30, ybut the device is not limited tol this particular number of pairs or the spacing shown. The device is not limited, however, to locating these pins at these distances, as the distances may be varied depending on the different spacing or location of the buttonholes and the length or sizes of these holes. These dimensions specified are merely given as examples to illustrate more clearly the use of the device. The opposite edges of the member carrying the pins 27, 30, in this case the member 12, are provided with notches 32 opposite and in alignment with each pair of pins 27 to 30. Also the member 12 is provided with a transverse mark or line 33 spaced from the center of the clamping screw 21 a distance equal to half the width of the portion 13 of the T member for use in locating this member at rightY angles to the portion 13, as shown in Fig. 4, by aligning this line with the edge 16 of the portion 13 in certain uses of the device.
In Figs. and 6 is shown how the device is used for locating the buttonhole and the binding patches for this hole in the garment with the buttonhole running at right angles to the edge of the garment. A portion of the garment is indicated at 34 with its side edge 35 against the positioning means 24, in this case the inner side of transverse flange of the head portion of the base structure. This garment is provided with a series of marks or lines 36 extending at right angles to the edge 35 and spaced to correspond with the desired spacing of the buttonholes to be formed in this garment. In using this device to locate a buttonhole, the member 12 is adjusted along the portion 13 of the base structure to locate the pins 27 at the proper distance desired from the locating line 24 to correspond with the desired spacing of the outer end of the buttonhole from the edge of the garment, and this can be determined by the scale 23 on the portion 13. After this member 12 has been so located and secured in position, it will be parallel to and extend longitudinally of the portion 13, as indicated in Figs. l, 5 and. The location of this member, however,V longitudinally of the member 13 is shown spaced a somewhat greater distance from the positioning line 24 in Figs. 5 and 6 than it' is in Fig. 1. After the member 12 has been so located, the garment 34 is placed on the device with its free edge 35 against the locatingV edge or line 24, and the line 36 for indicating the spacing of the buttonhole is placed on the pair of pins 25, as indicated in Fig. 5. This locates the line 36, which indicates the center line of the buttonhole, on this longitudinal center line ofthe base structure, which is also the longitudinal center line of the members 12 and 13. The garment is also pressed down so that the pairs of pins 27 to 30 pass up through the garment, but as in the illustration of Figs. 5 and 6, we are making a buttonhole of a length to correspond with the' spacing of the two pairs of pins 27 and 30, only these two pairs of pins are shown in Figs. 5 and 6 for clearer illustration, and therefore the pins 28, 29 are omitted in these figures.
After the garment is so placed, the tabs for binding the opposite edges of the buttonhole are located and applied. The two tabs are shown in Figs. 5 and 6 at 37 and 38, and each tab as illustrated comprises a square or rectangular piece of cloth folded diagonally, the patch 37 being folded at the line 39, thus forming the superimposed upper and lower triangular shaped portions 40 and 41. The tab 38 is similarly diagonally folded along the line 42 providing the upper and lower triangularly shaped superimposed' portions 43 and 44. Each tab is also provided with a longitudinal pencil or similar mark 45l parallel to the folded edge and at the desired distance therefrom, in this case the distance of the pins 27 and 30 from the opposite side edges of the base structure, in this case the members 12 and 13, and this is to indicate the proper location of the stitching for. these tabs from the edges of the buttonhole. `After the garment is placed on the pins as indicated in Fig. 5, this patch 37 is placed as indicated, with its folded edge in alignment with and over the side edge of the member 12, or if the pins 27 and 30 were in the base portion 13 (which would be the case if member 12 is omitted) it would be the edge of this portion, which can be readily located through the fabric of the garment, and the pins 27 and 30 adjacent this edge are passed up through the patch on the line 45.
A Then the patch is temporarily secured to the garment by tacking stitches 46, which can be readily located by the notches 32 opposite the pins 27 and 30. Then the other similar tab 38 is similarly located on the opposite side. In this operation the free portions of the tab 37 are folded upwardly over the secured edge of this tab, as indicated in Fig. 6, and the other tab 38 is similarly located on the opposite or lower pins 27 and 30, as indicated in this Fig. 6, by locating the folded edge 42 of this tab over the opposite edge of the member 12 and passing the lower pins 27 and 3f) through the longitudinal marking line 45 of this tab parallel to and spaced backwardly from this folded edge. This tab is also secured to the fabric by tacking stitches 47 through the notches 32 on the opposite side of the member 12. Now the two folded tabs 37 and 38 are properly located and secured by tacking stitches to the garment, and it will be seen that they are accurately located on the garment by this device, and the buttonhole, the line of which is indicated by the broken line 48, is in alignment with the line 36 and the center line of the member 12 halfway between the two lines of pins 27, 30. Now the garment is removed from this device and the buttonhole can be finished in the usual manner. This comprises stitching the two tabs to the garment along the lines 49 and 50, on the locating lines 45 and between the tacking stitches 46 and 47. The two tabs are now stitched in permanent positions on the garment, and the garment is then cut along the line 48 halfway between the two lines of stitching, and also on the bias at its opposite ends as indicated at 51, from the opposite ends of this cut to the tacking stitches. Then the tabs 37 and 38 are folded or passed through this cut to the opposite or back side of the garment and cross stitched at their opposite ends after removing the tacking stitches. This completes the buttonhole, and the tabs may or may not be trimmed off as desired.
It will be seen from the above that this device is used to locate the buttonhole accurately and uniformly with respect to the edge of the garment, and the tabs for binding the opposite edges of the buttonhole are also accurately and uniformly located with respect to the hole. In other words, this device effectively and quickly properly and uniformly locates the different buttonholes on the garment both with respect to the edge of the garment and with respect to each other, and it also accurately and uniformly locates the folded tabs to be stitched to the opposite sides of the buttonhole, both saving time and producing a better and more uniform buttonhole.
In the use of the device illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, with the member 12 extending parallel or longitudinally of the member 13, the buttonholes are located at right angles to the edge 35 of the garment. This device may also be used to locate the buttonholes extending parallel to the edge of the garment. This is illustrated in Fig. 4. In this use of the device the member 12 is extended laterally from one side of the portion 13 at right angles thereto, and it can be located at right angles by means of the line 33 by lining it up with the edge 16 of the portion 13. With two inch spacing of the pins 25 and 26 and two inch spacing of the pins 27, from the center of the screw 21, this will locate the'pins 27 in alignment with the pins 26. Then the garment is'placed on the device withV whatever pair 28, 29 or 30 is to be used, depending onl the size or length of the buttonhole, will be used to locate -location on opposite sides of the cut buttonhole.
the two patches 37 and 38, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, except the folded edges of these patches will be parallel to the edge 35 of the garment instead of at right angles to it, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
A more simplied device which may be used for so locating the buttonholes and binding patches is shown in Figs. 7 and 8. In this form of the device, a ilat strip of material 52 forms the base structure and may be of any suitable material, such as a suitable plastic material, and is of a width to correspond with the width of the member 13 of the irst form, or that is, the distance between the folded edges 39 and 42 of the patches 37 and 38 when these patches are secured to the garment at their proper One end 53 of this strip, and therefore extending transversely at right angles to the side edges 54 and 55, forms a locating mark or means corresponding to the locating means 24 of the first form. Mounted on the center line of this strip back from this end 53 is a pair of upwardly extending pins 56 corresponding to the locating pins 25 lof the first form, and spaced backwardly from these pins are the two pairs of pins S7 and 58, the pins 57 corresponding to the pins 27 of the rst form and the pins 58 corresponding to any one of the pairs of pins 28, 29 or 30. Thus as described in connection with the first form, the pins 57 are located from the locating mark 53 a distance equal to the distance the buttonhole is to be spaced from the edge of the garment, and the pins 58 are located from the pins 57 a distance equal to the length of the buttonhole. The pins 57 and 58 are located from each other transversely of the strip to correspond with the similar spacing of the pins 27 to 30 and also at the same distance from the opposite edges 54 and 55 as are the pins 27 and 30 from the opposite edges of the members 12 and 13. The opposite edges are provided with the notches 59 opposite pins 57 and 58 to correspond with the notches 32 of the rst form, and to locate these tacking stitches 46 and 47 for the patches. This device is used the same as the lirst form, except that it is not adjustable for the pins 57 and 58, but a plurality of pairs of pins corresponding to the pins 27 to 30 could be used for locating and forming buttonholes of diiferent lengths. In the use of this device the edge 35 of the garment is placed along the end edge 53 the same as along the edge 24 of the rst form, and the locating line 36 is placed over the pins 56 and the garment then pressed down over the pins 57 and 58, then the two folded patches 37 and 38 are placed on the pins 57 and 58 the same as described and illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, and the patches secured by tacking stitches 46 and 47 in the same manner. 'Then the garment is removed from the member 52, theppatches are stitched, and the buttonhole cut and stitched, as described in connection with the first form.
It is to be understood the device is not conned to use for locating and binding buttonholes, but can be used in the same way for pockets, except using the proper corresponding locating and spacing of the various pins.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, I claim:
1. In a buttonhole locating device of the character described, an elongated base structure having transverse locating means at one end for alignment of an edge of a garment in which a buttonhole is to be formed, a pair of spaced upright pins mounted on the base structure on a line at right angles to said locating means, two pairs of spaced upright pins mounted on the base structure spaced from the said locating means amounts indicating distances corresponding to the distances of the opposite ends of the buttonhole from said means, and said latter pairs of pins being each located on lines at right angles to the line of the rst pair of pins and located at a given distance from the opposite side edges of the base structure.
2. In a buttonhole locating device of the character de scribed, an elongated base structure having parallel opposite side edges. means at one end for locating an edge of a garment in which a buttonhole is to be formed, a pair of spaced upright pins mounted on the base structure on the longitudinal center line of said base structure adjacent said end, and two longitudinally spaced pairs of laterally spaced upright pins mounted on the base structure and located on lines at right angles to said side edges and at given distances from said first locating means with the individual pins located at given distances from said side edges.
3. In a buttonhole locating device of the character described, an elongated base structure having parallel op,
posite side edges, means at one end for locating an edge of a garment in which a buttonhole is to be formed, a pair of spaced upright pins mounted on the base structure on the longitudinal center line of said base structure adjacent said end, a plurality of pairs of laterally spaced upright pins mounted on the base structure, each pair being located on a transverse line at right angles to the side edges of the base structure and the pairs of pins being spaced longitudinally thereof from the locating means corresponding to the spacing of the ends of a button from the edge of a garment, and the opposite side edges of said structure being provided with notches in alignment with the latter pins.
4. In a buttonhole locating device ofthe character described, an elongated base structure including a T-shaped member comprising a body bar and a head bar at right angles thereto, said head bar having a locating means for the edge of a garment extending longitudinally thereof, a plurality of pairs of spaced upright pins on said head bar, the pins of each pair arranged on lines at rightangles to said locating means, one pair of pins being arranged on the center line of the body bar and the other pairs being spaced laterally therefrom to correspond with spacing of buttonholes to be made in the garment, a locating member mounted on the body bar for angular and longitudinal adjustment to different positions thereon, and a plurality of pairs of upright locating pins on the locating member, the pins `of each pair located on lines extending transversely of said member, and the pairs of pins spaced longitudinally of said member to correspond with the length of the buttonhole to be formed.
5. In a buttonhole locating device of the character described, an elongated base structure including a T-shaped member comprising a body bar and a head bar at right angles thereto, said head bar including a longitudinal upright ange at its uper edge forming a locating means for the edge of a garment, a plurality of pairs of upright spaced pins on said head bar, one pair on the longi-V tudinal center line of the body bar and the other pairs spaced laterally therefrom at distances corresponding to the spacing of buttonholes to be made in the garment, the pins of each pair being located on lines atV right angles to said ange, a locating member mounted on the body bar for angular and longitudinal adjustment thereon to different positions relative to said locating ange, and a plurality of pairs of spaced upright locating pins on the locating member spaced given distances longitudinally thereof to determine the length of the buttonholes, and the pins of each pair located on lines extending transversely of said member.
6. A buttonhole locating device according to claim 5 in which the locating member is a flat bar having parallel side edges provided with notches in alignment with each pair of pins in this bar.
