Application March 26, 1946, Serial No. 657,118
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a hem binding gage and more particularly to a gaging device for guiding a binding tape at a fixed distance from a hem or the like while the said tape is being sewed adjacent to the hem.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which is economical, easy to use, and which will facilitate the positioning of a binding tape while it is being sewed onto a piece of material.
A further object of this invention is to provide such a gage which can be used for positioning tape at difierent selective distances from a certain crease or line on a piece of material or on any garment.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be more clearly understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational plan view of my gage showing the same as used in the operation thereof.
Fig. 2 is an elevational plan view showing a modified form of said gage.
Fig. 3 is a side view thereof in vertical section showing the manner in which said tape is used for applying a binding tape to a piece of material.
As illustrated in the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes a piece of material, such as at the bottom of a garment or the like, on which has been formed a crease 6 defining a hem I, running along the bottom of the skirt, dress, or coat, and 8 denotes a binding tape or ribbon which is being sewed, by stitches 9, to said hem.
In forming the hem, the garment is first marked for length and the crease is then formed along the line defining the bottom of the garment. A hem l of the desired width is then formed by sewing the tape 8 along the edge thereof. It is important that this tape be guided, during the sewing thereof onto the hem, so that it will be parallel to the line 6 for the full distance around the garment. In order to facilitate the positioning of said tape, this invention provides a gage in the form of a plate l0 having preferably a series of pairs of slots ll extending therethrough and a plurality of notches l2 at the edge of said plate.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 1, there are three pairs of slots ll shown and two V-shaped notches.
The saidslots are graduated, as at [3, so as to indicate the diiierent distancesbetween the farthest edge of the tape and the seam 6 when either of the notches l2 are used.
In the use of this gage, the tape 9 is inserted through the proper pair of slots l l, depending upon the distance desired, by extending it upwardly through one slot and downwardly through another, as shown. The tape is then inserted into a sewing machine where it is stitched, as at 9, to the hem material and the proper distance is obtained by locating the proper notch l2 over the seam 6. As the said tape is moved through the sewing machine, it is guided by maintaining the notch l2 constantly in alignment with the seam 5 as the tape is permitted to slide through the slots H. The said tape may be tensioned as desired by placing a finger upon the exposed portion thereof, running over the surface of the gage, and pressing on said portion to tension the tape as it runs through the gage during the sewing operation when the gage is held by the hand, in the position shown in Fig. 3, as it is applied and runs through the sewing machine in the direction indicated by the arrow.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 2, only one pair of slots Ila are used and a larger number of notches l2-a are formed in the edge of the plate llJ-a. Each of said notches having indicia indicating the distance between the notch and the farthest ends of the slots H-a, or the edge of the tape, as it runs through said slots. If desired, the opposite edge of the plate 10 may he graduated in inches as shown, so that the rear edge of the device may be used as a scale.
I claim:
A tape guide gage of the character described comprising a substantially rectangular plate having pairs of spaced parallel slots formed in and arranged along the length of the plate; the slots of each pair being positioned adjacent the opposite sides of the plate on a single axis extending across said plate, and a plurality of notches formed in one of the longitudinal edges of the plate at fixed predetermined distances from said axis and from each other to serve as guide marks for a tape being guided through the slots.
