Patented Oct. 5, 1937 Y UNITED STATES SEWING MACHINE GUIDING ATTACHMENT Hubert MnGreist, deceased, late of New Haven, Conn.,"'by the AFirst National Bank and `'Iru'st Company of New Haven, Conn., executor, and Clifford J. Word and Walter C. Greist, New
. Haven, Conn., assignors to The Grest Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Connecticut Application `January 7, 1938, Serial No. 57,996
7 claims. (01.112-139) This .invention relates to certain imp-rovements on the sewing machine guide shown and described in United ,States Patent No. 1,101,274, dated June 23, 1914;.1and 'by virtue of which improvements the range of work, to be performed byv the assistance of the guide, is largely increased, as Will hereinafter fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing` Fig. l isa plan View of the improved guide;Y Fig. 2 isa Vside View of the same looking from the left of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 isa sectional View on line 3 3, Fig. l, and Fig. 4,;is a bottom view of the guide.
-Referring to 'the drawing, I2 denotes the body of the guide-plate which is adjustably attached to the. presser-foot I4 by means of a rivet I3,
passing through a long slot I3a in the guideplate, and a curved plate spring I3c located beneath the head of said rivet and pressing on said guide-plate. The said guide-plate will'thus be frictionally held in any position to which it may be adjusted laterally with relation to the needle-hole l5 in the presser-foot, the latter being provided With a shank I4a by which it may `beattached to the presser-bar of a sewing machine vin a Well-known manner.
vThe guide-plate .I2 is provided with right. and left open-ended slots I6, I'I, I.8 and I9 the inner guidingedges of the `pairsvof which .overlap each other in the line of the feed of the Work. The said guide-.plate 'is also provided with a closed piping strip slot 20,.these slots all being similar to those of the guide-'plate of Patent No. Y1,101,2"1'4 above referred to. The slots I'I and I9 or the slot 2|] may Valso be utilized in stitching bands toy material. Y
In stitchingtwo strips of material together, such as lace edgings or lace insertions, .by a very narrow overlapping of their edges, the material may be` guided through the slots I6 and II', or I'I and I8; but for a Wider overlapping of their edges the material may `be guided through the slots I8 and I9. It will thus be understoodithat the guide-plate I2, With its front overlapping slots just referred to, may be used for any of the plain'stitching purposes mentioned in said Patent No. 1,101,274.
To hold the guide-plate in proper parallel position, in making lateral adjustments, the presserfoot I4 is provided With lugs 22 struck up from its bottom .and entering the long slot I3a in the said guide-plate. '.For convenient adjustment of the said guide-plate-it Yis provided with an upstanding lug 23 which may be grasped by the thumb and finger of the user in making lateral adjustments of said guide-plate.
The guide-plateis provided With'an offset lug or projection 24 having a closed opening 25 through Whichla braid or cord may be passed to the needle of a sewing machine. The material of the lug .24 is turned down underneath the said guide-plate so as to extend forWar-d in the rform of small Aspaced-apartfmgers 26 which overlap the bottom of said guide-plate and thus-provide va braid guideway beneath said .guide-plate toren- Vsure. accurate guiding of a braid when the .con-
struction described is to be utilized as a topbraider. Y 1 s It will .beV understood, of cour-se, that for. a brai-ding operation, the guide-plate I2 carrying the cord or braid guide which is offset laterally from the slotted part of said guide-plate, Will be radjusted'laterally to locate the braidfopening 25 close up to and in register with the needle-.hole I5 in the presser-fechas denoted by dotted lines in Fig. 1, such adjustment being permitted .by the long slot I3a in the guide-plate i2. By thus 1ocating the braid opening close to the needle .of
the-sewing machine intricate braiding designs,
means for'straight or right line lateral adjustment, relative to the'presser-foot I4of .the guideplate I2 with its front Work-guiding slots and with the cord or braid guide 24,25 and 26, to
operativeY or inoperative' positions of the said Work-guiding slots, or,. alternatively, vto operative or inoperativepostions of the oord or braid guide, the latter being in its inoperative position,
as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and inits' operative position when the guide-plate is adjusted t`o the position shown in dotted lines in said Fig. 1 to bring the said cord or braid guide in close proximity tothe needle hole I5 in the presserfoot I4. When the guide-plate is invitscperative position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 the slots I6, I'I, I8, I9 and 20 may be utilized for the plain ving, asv-Will noW be 'set forth. Attached to `the back-of `the presser-foot Ii4 'is va Vtucking. :gage plateil :having .an upstanding lug28` through --Which passes a rivet or a set-screw 29 threaded vintothe.presser-foot. The plate `2Tl ispreferably provided with a graduated scale V30, and the guide-plate is also preferably provided with a Y graduated scale'3l. 'Iucks from the size of pin tucks up to 3pinch wide may be made and accurately stitched with the materialv folded where a tuck is to be made. The folded edge is to* be inserted from the left into slot I6 or I8 in the guide-plate. The width of the tuck to be made is to be determined Yby adjusting the guide-plate laterally relative to the needle-hole I5 in Ythe presser-foot. For making pin tucks the guideplate would be adjusted to the left practically to its limit of movement, as shown by full lines in Fig; 1. For wider tucks the guide-plate is adjusted to the right, the scale 3| being utilized Y to determine the width of the tucks, each numeral on said scale representing 1/gth inch. Y
' The'permanently attached'plate 21,'with its scale 30, is to be used for indicating the spaces between parallel tucks to be made.` `This can be Y accomplished by marking the material with Va pencil, both at the beginning ofi each tuck and at its end, before remo-ving the work from the attachment, using the scale 30 to indicate wherel thepencilY marks should be made, according to the -Width of spacing desired, and the material is tobefolded on a line between the two pencil marks.
In the use of the attachment for edgestitching, piping or Vstitching ban-dsk to material, the guideplate`|2 Yshould be adjusted to the'left, as shown by full lines in Fig. 1. For top braiding the guide-plate will be adjusted Well to the right,
` as hereinbefore stated, toI bring the guide opening` close to the needle-hole I5;V while for tucking the adjustment of said guide-plate would depend on the desired Width of the tucks to be made.
The forward slotted part of the guide-plate is Y' Y preferably turned up rather sharply, as shown in Fig. 2, to facilitate insertion and guiding of the work in edge stitchingand piping.
From the foregoing it willbe understood that the invention provides a sewing machine guiding attachment, of simple construction, by the use of which a. large variety of Work may be performed. v Y 'y 4 Aside fromtheY rivet |3,the plate spring, I3c
and thesetV screw 29, this simple construction consists of only three main parts, to wit, Ythe presser-foot I4, the slotted guide-plate 2| having a cord or braid guide, constructed as shown, and
lthe tucking gage plate 2`| attached to the back fof the said presser-foot. j Y
