ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,380,173 BUTTONHOLE SEWING GUIDE Edna Pasqualetti, 1702 W. Flower St., Phoenix, Ariz. 85015 Filed Nov. 16, 1964, Ser. No. 411,384 1 Claim. (Cl. 33-190) This invention pertains to a guide device to facilitate sewing operations with a sewing machine and is particularly directed to a buttonhole sewing guide for sewing machines.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device to determine the position and location of a buttonhole on a piece of cloth.
Another object is to provide a buttonhole sewing guide of plastic or other suitable pliable material, either clear or opaque, to be placed on the cloth for positioning the sewing of buttonholes therein.
A further object of this invention is to provide a buttonhole sewing guide that is easy to use and universal in application.
An object is also to provide a buttonhole sewing guide equally adapted to both lengthwise or crosswise use in positioning a buttonhole.
A still further object is to provide a buttonhole sewing guide readily usable with any zig zag sewing machine or a regular straight stitch machine with a zig zag attachment.
It is also an object to provide indicating and positioning reference lines for placing the buttonhole at desired positions from the edge of the material or garment.
And a further object is to provide a buttonhole sewing guide which may be used for button holes of different sizes.
Further features and advantages of this invention will appear from a detailed description of the drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the buttonhole guide incorporating this invention in use.
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the buttonhole guide shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a side view of the buttonhole sewing guide shown in FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view showing the device positioned for sewing a buttonhole.
As an example of one embodiment of this invention, there is shown a buttonhole guide comprising a rectangular sheet of pliable plastic material, preferably transparent, having the side edges 11 and 12 and end edges 13 and 14. Centrally located in the sheet 15 is an elongated sewing slot 16 having parallel spaced sides 17 and 18 positioned parallel to the edge reference lines 19, 20 and 21 positioned at desired distances 22, 23 and 24 from the center line 25 0f the slot 16. Graduation marks 3,158,173 Patented Apr. 30, 1968 26 for direct measurements in inches for the length of the button hole 27 to be sewn.
Spaced from the ends 28 and 29 of the slot 16 are the corresponding parallel reference lines 30, 31 and 32 for positioning buttonholes at right angles to those shown in FIG. 4. To position the buttonhole 27 relative to the edge 33 of the garment 34 the guide sheet 15 placed with a reference line 19, 20 and 21, or 30, 31 and 32 over and in alignment with the edge 33 of the garment. The sheet 15 may be fastened to the garment 34 by suitable means such as the straight pins 35. The garment 34 with the guide attached is then presented in the usual manner to the sewing machine which completes the sewing of the buttonhole within the slot 16 of the guide and of a length desired as determined from the graduations 27.
While the apparatus herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is also to be understood that the apparatus is capable of mechanical alteration without departing from the spirit of the invention and that such mechanical arrangement and commercial adaptation as fall within the scope of the appendent claim are intended to be included herein.
Having thus fully set forth and described this invention what is claimed and desired to be obtained by United States Letters patent is:
1. A buttonhole sewing guide comprising in combination:
(A) rectangular sheet of pliable transparent plastic material having an elongated slot formed therein having side edges extending parallel to the longer sides of said sheet to determine the width of said buttonhole;
(B) laterally disposed graduation lines longitudinally spaced along and issuing at right angles from said side edges of said slot for determining the length of said buttonhole,
(C) concentrically arranged rectangular parallel edge reference lines on said sheet surrounding said slot and parallel to the edges of said sheet, the side edges of said slot arranged to be selectively aligned with the edge of the garment to receive said buttonholes so as to determine various positions of said buttonholes relative to said garment edge.
