GARMENT HANGER Filed April 27, 1956 July 15, 1958 a. 4/ 3, am W l J 8 a ||'||||l\ a f M w M Fig ;2
United States Patent GARMENT HANGER William S. Jennette, Elizabeth City, N. C. Application April 27, 1956, Serial No. 581,150 2 Claims. (31. 223-95 The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garment hangers, generally classified, and has reference somewhat more in particular to a hanger the special purpose of which is to accommodate and suspend mens trousers.
In carrying out the present invention two embodiments have been evolved and produced for use. One is a dual purpose type in that it is fashioned to include .a so-called coat-hanger and trousers hanger located therebeneath and combined therewith, the two being incorporated in a simple structure having a hook.
A second form of the invention has to do with a construction which is primarily designed and constructed to serve as a trousers hanger. Looking toward an acceptable improvement a preferred embodiment is that which is characterized by a simplified arrangement of components which cooperate in serving to satisfactorily grip the cuff portions and compactly suspend two pairs of trousers.
Generically the essence of the invention has to do with a hook which may be hung from a clothes closet pole or equivalent support, said hook being connected with trousers hanger means characterized by a pair of block-like members interconnected by a truss or bridge wherein the latter takes the form of a linearly straight bar member having a lengthwise ledge along its bottom edge and wherein a pair of finger-like grips are opposed to the ledge-equipped face and which themselves are provided with auxiliary companion ledges, the finger-like members being coplanar and having adjacent ends which are spaced apart to provide an entrance or opening which facilitates placing the cuff portions of the trousers legs in position for hanging and straightening and, by the same token, provides a handy arrangement which allows the suspended trousers to be detached by a simple one-handed operation.
It is an obvious objective, therefore, to provide improved trousers hanger means either with single or dual forms so constructed that they will unquestionably meet with the manufacturing and economy requirements of manufacturers, will merit endorsement by clothiers and others in their line of endeavor and will satisfy the requirements of everyday users.
Other objects, features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying sheet of drawings.
In the drawings wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trousers hanger constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention and showing the manner in which the same is constructed and used.
Figure 2 is a plan view With the wire hanger member removed, in order to expose the details of construction of the principal parts.
Figure 3 is a section on the vertical line 33 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of a modification.
Referring now to the drawings and. with reference first to the single trousers hanger type as seen in Figure 4, this comprises two principal components; namely, the trousers hanger means 6 and the coat hanger means 8. The latter is of any conventional or suitable construction and made of appropriate materials and is provided at its center with a hang-up hook 10. It is provided at its ends with suitable connecting cleats or appropriate members 12 connecting the end portions with the underlying trousers hanger means 6. The latter is for a single pair of trousers. It is characterized by a pair of block-like end members 14 of general rectangular form connected by a bridge or truss bar 16. This is a flat faced connecting bar between the members 14 and it is substantially straight and has flat faces, one vertical fiat face of which is denoted at 1%. Along thelower edge of this face there is an outstanding rib 20 which is rectangular in cross-section and whose upper surface provides a ledge, that is, a supporting ledge for an edge of the cooperating cuff on one of the legs of the trousers to be suspended. Opposed to the face 18 are spaced coplanar finger-like cuif embracing grips or gripping members 22. These are provided on the inner faces with ribs 24 providing auxiliary ledges, The adjacent end portions 26 are spaced apart so that the intervening space provides an entrance through which the cuffs on the legs of the trousers are inserted (usually requiring two hands) and subsequently removed at which time the operation may be said to be one-handed.
The construction of the trousers hanger seen in Figs. 1 to 3 is much like that single one already described. Here there is a wire hanger hook 28 having arm portions 30 with terminal or end portions 32 suitably bent and joined with block-like end members 34 at the opposite ends of a wooden or equivalent unit. The unit is provided with the aforementioned bridge or truss which is here again in the form of an integral bar denoted at 36 having flat faces 38 on opposite sides and also edge ribs 40, the upper edges of which provide ledges. On each side of the faces 28 are the coplanar finger-like extensions, that is which extend from the block-like members 34 and provide cuif embracing members. These are denoted by the numerals 42 on one side and 44 on the other side. However, the inner adjacent end portions are suitably beveled and are spaced apart as at 46 and the inward faces are provided with ribs 48 which provide the auxiliary ledges.
It follows, that generically speaking, the hook-equipped hangermember at the top is of no particular consequence, this may be wood, commercial plastics, or bent from wire twisted and formed in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The important means is that which is here characterized as the trousers hanger. As before mentioned this may be either single in form as seen in Fig. 4 or of the dual type seen in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive. In either instance there will be seen the one-piece unit characterized by the block-like end members and. the interconnecting bar or bridge which is of sufficient height that the flat faces actually lie alongside and embrace at least part of the cuff portions. The outer face of the other cuif portion is embraced by the finger-like grips 42 and these are of a cross-section or height equivalent to the suspension bar 16. By providing the entrance means between the inner adjacent ends of the members 22, 42 and 44 and providing the rib-like members to function as ledges a highly satisfactory and practical construction is had.
The foregoing is considered illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A trousers hanger comprising a one-piece clampless unit embodying a pair of block-like end members and an interconnecting bar, said bar being rectangular in crosssection and having at least one flat vertical culf contacting face and being provided along its lower lengthwise edge only of said one face with an outstanding rib, the upper edge of said rib constituting a cuff-edge rest and suspension ledge, a pair of substantially rigid fingerdike cuff embracing members connected to said end members and disposed in opposed spaced parallelism relative to said one vertical face of said bar member and provided on their inward surfaces with lengthwise ribs, the latter ribs being spaced from, parallel to, and coplanar with said first named rib, the upper edges of said second named ribs constituting auxiliary cuff rests and suspension ledges, the inner adjacent ends of said finger-like members being spaced apart a distance sufficient to facilitate the steps of manually inserting and removing the cuff-equipped portions of the trousers legs.
2. A trousers hanger which functions to support the trousers in a down-hanging position suspended wholly and without being clamped by the cuffs on the legs of the trousers comprising a one-piece body embodying a pair i of spaced coplanar block-like end members having their inwardly disposed adjacent ends connected together by a space-bridging truss-like bar, said bar being provided with flat vertical surfaces, said surfaces being provided along their lower longitudinal edges only with lengthwise ribs, and pairs of spaced apart cuff embracing and retaining fingers connected to said end members and provided on their inner surfaces along their lower edge portions With ribs cooperating with said first named ribs, all of said ribs being rectangular in cross-section, the upper edges being flat, at right angles to said bar and fingers, respectively, and in a common plane, said upper edges constituting cuff-edge rests and suspending ledges, the latter being in a plane well below the plane of the upper edges of the bar and fingers, respectively, the inner adjacent ends of the fingers of the respective pairs of fingers being spaced apart, said inner ends being bevelled outwardly.
