Claims priority, application Luxembourg June 29, 1955 5 Claims. (CI. 57-99) The present invention relates to spinning machines including a ring rail actuated by a driving chain wound on a chain drum mounted on a carriage having, with respect to the machine frame, a reciprocating motion imparted thereto by a driving cam, this reciprocating motion in turn producing, through pawl and ratchet means and for every reciprocation of said carriage, an intermittent rotation of a part mounted on said carriage.
The object of the present invention is to provide a spinning machine as above stated, which is better adapted to meet the requirements of practice than those used up to the present time, and in particular such that it can be used for making on the cops as well cylindrical layers of yarn as conical layers.
For this purpose, according to this invention, said part having an intermittent movement of rotation is arranged so that it can be coupled at will either with means for automatically operating a device for varying the ratio of transmission between the driving cam and the carriage whereby the amplitude of the reciprocating movement of the carriage is modified automatically on every reciprocavtion thereof, or with said chain drum so as to impart thereto an intermittent angular movement for every reciprocating movement of the carriage.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, given merely by way of example and in which:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view showing the elements of a spinning machine.
Fig. 2 shows on an enlarged scale and in cross section some of the elements of said machine, the arrangement being made according to the present invention.
Fig. 3 is a part view in section on the line 3-6 of Fig. 2.
Figs. 4 to 7 show different kinds of cops as may be obtained according to the present invention.
The general construction of a spinning machine according to my invention may be of any suitable type, either conventional or not. For instance, the spindles of this machine may be driven from a driving shaft extending along the machine and carrying a plurality of worms meshing with worm wheels mounted on the spinning spindles.
The ring rail 1 of this machine is driven by a mechanism including the following elements.
A carriage 2 is mounted s'lida'ble in the machine frame or casing 3 on slideways 4 extending preferably in a direction at right angles to that of the row of spindles of the machine.
A chain drum 5 mounted on said carriage 2 has, fixed thereto, one end of a chain 6 the other end of which is fixed to a transmission drum 7 journal-led in the casing 3 of the machine.
A cam 8, which will be hereinafter called formation cam, is coupled with said drum 7 and carries, fixed to the periphery thereof, a second chain 9 the other end of which is secured to a control bar 1% extending along the spinning machine. The reciprocating movements of said bar 10 control the upward and downward movements of ring rail 1 with which it is connected through a plurality of control chains 11 disposed at suitable intervals along the machine, said chains pa sing around rollers r carried by frame 3.
Chain drum 5 is subjected to the action of means for preventing it from turning in the direction in which it is urged by the weight of the ring rail 1, such means being for instance constituted by a worm 21 journalled in carriage 2 and in mesh with a worm wheel 20 rigid with said drum 5. Thus, when carriage 2 is moved in the direction corresponding to the upward movement of the ring rail, said chain drum 5 can exert the desired pulling action on chain 6.
A driving cam 12 actuated by a shaft of the machine imparts to carriage 2 a reciprocating motion the amplitude of which depends upon the shape of said cam and determines the movement of the ring rail and also the shape of the layers of yarn successively formed on the cops.
Driving cam 12 acts on carriage 2 through a variable ratio transmitting device which makes it possible to vary the amplitude of the reciprocating motion of carriage 2 for every revolution of driving cam 12.
Preferably, this variable ratio transmission device is of the continuous type so that it is possible to vary the amplitude of the reciprocation of carriage 2 continuously within a given range of values.
Therefore it will be possible to obtain cops of different dimensions without having to replace the driving cam 12 by other cams of different dimensions.
Advantageously, the variable ratio transmission device is made as follows.
Cam '12 cooperates with a roller 13 carried by an oscillating arm 14 pivotable about an axis 15 fixed with respect to the casing of the machine.
This arm M pushes a roller 16 which is in contact with arm 14 at a point located between axis 315 and roller 13. Roller l d is carried by a part 17 mounted on carriage 2.
Part 17 is movable on the carriage 2 so that the point of contact of roller 16 on arm can be varied. For instance, part 17 is rigid with a nut 18 movable axially on a screw 19 mounted in the carriage.
Such a machine can be used for obtaining conical layers of yarnon the cops, and it makes it possible to vary the height of every conical layer.
The arrangement of such yarn layers on a cop is shown by Fig. 4 and it will be understood that it is necessary, in order to obtain such a winding of the yarn on the cop, to provide means for gradually displacing along the axis of the spindle the length along which every conical layer is formed so as to obtain a succession of superposed conical layers.
This result may be obtained, for instance, by coupling chain drum 5 with a worm wheel 2d driven by a worm 21 rigid with a ratchet wheel 22 driven with an intermittent rotation as a result of the reciprocating motion of carriage 2.. For instance, this carriage is provided with a rack 23 meshing with a pinion 24 carrying a lever 25 connected with a lever 26 fitted with a pawl 22a cooperating with ratchet wheel 22.

movement corresponding to the formation of conical layers of yarn of a maximum height L (the roller 16 of the variable ratio transmission device being in this case in its position nearest to roilcr 13). When it is desired to obtain conical layers of smaller height, roller 16 is moved away from roller 13 by rotating screw 19, such a movement being for instance obtained by means of a hand of the cop (and which extend over height h as shown on Fig. 4) are obtained by giving cam 8 a suitable shape for the portion thereof corresponding to the beginning of yarn winding. in this way, the desired result is obtained since the useful section of the cam outline is varied on every reciprocation of the carriage which produces a corresponding rotation of chain drum 5.

Now, when it is desired to make cylindrical parallel layers of yarn on the cops (for instance as shown on Figs. 5, 6 or 7), the height of the smallest of these cylindrical layers is still much greater than that of the maximum height of a conical layer (for practical purposes, it is about five times greater).
Therefore, if it is desired to use the same frame to form cylindrical layers of yarn on the cops, it is necessary to change the driving cam for one of different shape giving, for the same angle of rotation of drum'7, a longer vertical stroke of ring rail ll.
In order to permit of forming parallel cylindrical yarn layers Without having to change cam i1, drum '7 is coupled with cam through an amplifier gear 27 such that, for the same angular displacement of drum 7, the amplitude of the angular displacement of said cam d is much greater.
In particu 11, this result can be obtained by making use as amplifier gear of an epicycloidal gear box making it possible to obtain, between drum 7 and cam is, either a direct drive (for overdrive (for obtaining parallel cylindrical layers of yarn). 7
Account should be taken of the fact that when parallel cylindrical layers of yarn are formed, the height of these layers varies with their diameter (Figs. 5 to 7) and it is necessary to provide means for correspondingly varying the amplitude of the reciprocating motion of ring rail 1.
With a machine including a variable ratio transmission device interposed between driving cam 12 and carriage 2, the above mentioned result is obtained by placing said transmission device under control of ratchet wheel 22.
With cops made of parallel cylindrical layers of yarn, the height of the layers either decrease when their diameter increases (as shown by Figs. 5 and 7), or on the contrary increase (as shown by Fig. 6). it is therefore necessary to couple ratchet wheel 22 with the operating screw i9 of the variable ratio transmission device through a device capable of rotating said screw either in one di rection or i the other.
For this pt ose, the shaft 23 on which worm 211. is fixed carries, slidingly keyed thereon, a sleeve 29 the respective ends of which are provided with clutch means for coupling said shaft with either of two opposed conical pinions 3d and 31 freely rotatable on shaft 2% and both of which are in mesh with a conical pinion 3Z3 fixed on screw 19. Sleeve 2@ may be left in neutral position where it is not coupled with either of said pinions 3t) and 31.
When it is desired to make cops such as shown by Fig. 5 or Fig. 7, sleeve 29 is moved in the position which couples with shaft 2% that of pinions 3d and 31 the engagement of which moves roller it toward the axis 15 of arm 14. On the contrary, when it is desired to make cops such as shown by Fig. 6, the other conical pinion is engaged.
In order to obtain a cop such as iilustrated by Fig. 7 the layers of which have their bottom ends all located in the same horizontal plane, the adjustment must be such that one of the end positions of oscillating arm 14% i is always vertical whereby carriage 2 always returns into winding conical layers of yarn), or an layers on the cops, the chain drum 5 must no longer be coupled with worm wheel 20 or worm 21. For this purpose, the arrangement might be such that when sleeve 29 is in neutral position with respect to pinions 3t and it, it is in mesh with another pinion, not shown on the drawing, which is itself connected with wheel 20 or worm 21, whereas when 29 is engaged with either of said pinions 3i and 31 it is disconnected from said pinion not shown on the drawing.
But in the construction illustrated by the drawing, the dr: disconnected from Worm wheel 20 by retractin a locking 33 carried by said worm wheel and adapted to engage a cylindrical housing 34 provided in chain drum 5. in this case, a retractable angular 't 55 is engaged to prevent drum 5 from turning c eiiect of the pull exerted thereon by chain 6, this abutment then playing the same part as the worm and worm wheel transmission Zl-Zii when this transmission is in mesh.
in a general manner, while I have, in the above description, disclosed what I deem to be practical and efficient embodiments of my invention, it should be well understood that I do not Wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes made in the arrangement, disposition and form of the parts Without departing from the principle of the present invention as comprehended within the scope of the accompanying claims.
What I claim is:
1. A spinning machine which comprises, in combination, a frame, a ring rail reciprocable verticaiiy with re spect to said frame, a device for controlling the vertical displacements of said ring rail including a carriage guided along a horizontal path with respect to said frame, a chain fixed to said ring rail and means including rollers journalled in said frame and a chain drum mounted on said carriage for pulling said chain vertically in response to displacement of said carriage in one direction, with means for preventing said chain drum from rotating with respect to said carriage in a direction corr pending to a downward movement of said ring rail, a driving cam rotatable in said frame, adjustable transmitting means interposed between said cam and said carriage for imparting a reciprocating motion to said carriage with respect to said frame in response to the rotary motion of said cam, adjusting means operatively connected with said transmitting means for varying the rate of transmission of movement from said cam to said carriage, a part rotatably mounted on said carriage, cooperating means carried by said frame and said carriage for imparting a limited rotation to said part on every reciprocation of said carriage, and means for coupling said part at will either with said chain drum or with said adjusting means.
2. A machine according to claim 1 in which the means for coupling said part with said adjusting means include manually operable reversing means whereby this coupling can be obtained at will in one direction or the opposed one.
3. A spinning machine which comprises, in combination, a frame, a ring rail reciprocable vertically with respect to said frame, a device for controlling the vertical displacements of said ring rail including a carriage guided along a horizontal path with respect to said frame, a chain fixed to said ring rail and means including rollers journalled in said frame and a chain drum mounted on said carriage for pulling said chain vertically in response to displacement of said carriage in one direction, with means for preventing said chain drum from rotating with respect to said carriage in a direction corresponding to a down ward movement of said ring rail, a driving cam rotatable in said frame, an arm pivotally mounted in said frame about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of said driving cam, a roller carried by said arm and in Contact with said cam, a roller mounted on said carriage in a position adjustable along a path at least substantially parallel to the middle position of said arm, said last mentioned roller being in rolling contact With the edge of said arm, whereby the oscillating displacement of said arm, imparted thereto by said cam, give said carriage a reciprocating displacement, adjusting means for fixing the position of said last mentioned roller on said carriage, a part rotatably mounted on said carriage, cooperating means carried by said frame and said carriage for imparting a limited rotation to said part on every reciprocation of said carriage, and means for coupling said part at will either with said chain drum or with said adjusting means.
4. A device according to claim 3 in which said adjusting means include a screw journalled in said carriage.
5. A device according to claim 1 in which the means 6 for pulling said ring rail vertically in response to displacements of said carriage in one direction include a motion multiplying device operative at will to modify the length of vertical stroke of said ring rail Without changing said 5 driving cam.
