VEGETABLE SLIOER.

NITED STATES A PATENT Orrlcn.
LOUIS SHERMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEGETABLE-SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nb. 284,078, dated August 28, 1883.
Application filed May 1883. (Model To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slicers for Vegetables, &c. ,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a slicer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof in line 00 a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a portion in line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of improvements in a slicer for vegetables, 8m, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and definitely claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a cast metallic base of the form of an annulus or rim, with arms A, producing a spider which is light, strong, and durable.
B represents a sheet-metal cylinder, which is secured to said base and has an opening or throat, a, adjacent to which is secured a vertically-arranged knife or cutter, O.
D represents a holder for the vegetable, &c., the same being secured to a shaft, E, which is supported below on a step at the center of the spider, and mounted at top on a frame, E, which also supports the crank-shaft F, said frame being sustained, if desired, on a projection, A, of the base.
G represents a bevel-wheel, which is secured to said shaft F and meshes with a bevel-pinion, G, secured to the shaft E, whereby by the operation of saidshaft F rotation is imparted to the shaft E, and consequently to the holder D.
In the drawings I show three holders attached to the center shaft; but the number thereof may be increased or diminished. In the holder is a slide or plate, H, which is forced toward the cylinder B by means of a spring, J, the latter being suitably fitted within the holder and bearing against the back of said slide. The top of the slide has a finger-piece,
H, and the sides thereof have laterally-projecting lips J, which enter grooves or ways K in the sides of the holder, whereby the slide is guided true in its motions, said piece H pro viding convenient means of forcing back the slide when the vegetable, &c., is to be fitted in the holder. As said ways K divide the sides of the holder and thus weaken the same, I cover said ways with crimps K, which stiffen the sides of .the holder and guard the ends of the lips J. The holder has secured to it, on
the upper side of its inner end, a bar, L, which,
cylinder B, the use thereof being hereinafter stated.
The vegetable is placed in the holder in front of the slide, so that the latter forces it against the cylinder. Power is applied to the crankshaft, whereby the holder is rotated, and as the vegetable is carried around it comes in contact with the edge of the cutter, and the slicingis accom1: lished, the slices escaping through the throat a to the outside of thecylinder, where they n'iay be collected, the vegetable being continually forced against the knife until it is entirely sliced. As the vegetable passes the plate M it is cut in directions at a right angle to the knife 0, so that when the slicing is occasioned by said knife the slices are divided into two or more pieces, or minced, according to the number of bits I) employed, it being noticed that the bits M are in advance of the knife 0, so that the vegetable as cut or grooved by the bits does not separate into smaller pieces until it actually passes said knife, and all pieces that are cut by the bits and knife pass out through the same throat, both the edges of the knifeand bits being on the inner periphery of the cylinder.
The plate M may be removed when required; but in some cases it may be desirable to have the same riveted or otherwise firmly attached to the cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a slicing-machine, a cylinder having a knife secured to its periphery, in combination with an inelosed rotary holder provided with ways K and crilnps K, and a slide, H, having lips J, said crimps K covering said ways and connecting the portion ofthe cylinder above and below said ways, and stiffening said cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A rotary holder with a slide, and a cylin- 'der with a knife, in combination with a Vertical plate, M, formed with bits I), said knife and plate being on the inner periphery of the cylinder, which surrounds'the holder, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A cylinder with bits b and knife 0, a rotary holder with closed or covered guideways K, and a spring-pressed slide, H, with lips J, 20 combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a slicing-machine, a rotary holder provided with a slide and spring, having an open top and a connected covering-bar at the rear 25 of said top, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
