Be it known that I, EDWARD F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester in the countyof Monroe and State of llew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable- Slicers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom an in drawin My lnvzntibn relateg vegetable slicers.
The objectof my invention is to provide a slicer of this character in which the knives are mounted upon rotary arms and are rotated on said arms in a direction opposite to the movement of the arms, whereby .a
to improvements in sheathing cutting action, as well as a rotary arm showing cutting action is obtained.
Another object of my invention is to provide a cutter of this character having many advantageous details of structure, and providing a more simple, cheap and effective cutter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a side elevation, partly broken away, of my improvedslicer. Fig. 2,is a top, plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a side elevation showing the cutter tilted upon the legs, and showing a bottom plan view of the gage plate, the cutting blades and its operatin mechanism. Fig. 4, is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a vertical,transverse,sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Referring now to thedrawings, 1 and 2 represent the legs spaced the proper distance apart, and having at their upper ends the enlargedcircular portions 3 and 4- which form enlarged bearing surfaces for the frame 5, and upon which the same is pivoted, which I will now proceed to describe. The legs at their lower ends are provided with feet (3 which are provided with 0 enmgs through which bolts 7 pass, an by means of which the legs are secured to the stand or other support. The inner faces 8 of the enlarged circular portions 3 and 4 are smoothand the knife and gage supporting frame 5 at o posite sides-is provided with downwarily-extending ears 9 and 10 which are of the same size as the circular portions 3 and 4 and rest snugly l ward by the shaft is held against twistin shown in sleeve 32 he against the surface 8 and passing centrally through the ears and the-enlarged portions are bolts or pivots 11 and 12 which are pro- .vided at their inner ends on the inside of the ears with nuts 13 and 14, and on their outer ends on the outside of the circular portions 3, and t'with nuts 15 and 16, whereby the frame 5 is pivotally supported between theleg's and adapted to swing upon the bolts.
In order to allowof locking the frame, in its adjusted or oscillated posltion, whereby the legs can be attached to an uneven or slanting surface, and yet retain the frame in a horizontal position, I provide the enlarged portion 3 with a in 17 which extends inwardly through a s ot 18 in the ear 9. By this arrangement it will be seen that the frame can be swung from a horizontal position to an oblique position past the vertical line, whereby the working of the knives and mechanism is exposed for cleaning and replacing or re airing any of the parts. In order to hold t e frame in its adjusted position I provide a set screw 19 which passes through the enlarged portion 3 and engages the inner face of the ear 9.

The plate 20 on its lower face is provided with a downwardlyextending cutting edge 82 surrounding the opening, and the same being formed integral with the plate. The arch-shaped member 24 is also secured to the frame 20 by means of thebolts 23, and shown in Fig. 1. The said member 24 adjacent one side is p'rovided with the downwardly-extending portion 25having an enlarged horizontal bearing 26 at its lower end. Mounted in said bearing-is a horizontal shaft 27 which extends outward through a bearing 28 in the arch 24, wherethe outer 'end a crank 29' is provided, by means of which the shaft is rotated, but preferably I employ a balance or fly wheel dotted lines, Fig. 2 and indicated at 30. The inner end of the shaft 27 has seis preferably of the formcured thereon a beveled gear 31 which is referably rovidcd' with an elon ated P E a screw 33. The inner end of the sleevebear against the bearing 26 and prevents the outd upon the shaft by the set movement of the shaft. The arch 24 at the center is provided with a vertical bearing 36 in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 37 having at'its. upper end a 'cap or collar 38 held thereon by a set screw 39, whereby the downward movement of the shaft is limited. The cross-head 42' is provided on its lower face with a sleeve 43rigidly carried by the cross-head. The lower endof the shaft 37 extends through the opening 44 in the crosshead and extends into said sleeve and is the set screw 45. The

Loosely mounted upon the shaft 37 is a sleeve 57 which has at its lower end a gear 59 rigidly attached thereto which meshes with'the idle gear 56,whereby the rotation of the gear 59 rotates the knife in the same direction through the idle gear. The upper endof the sleeve has secured'thereon by means of ascrew'60' a beveled gear 61 meshing'with the lower edge of the beveled gear 31, and whereby it is rotated in the opposite direction to the gear 42, Bylthis ar rangement it will beseen that" the knives fee travel around beneath the frame 2Qrand are at the same timerotated in the opposite lrection of said travel, whereby 'a shearing action is obtained.
The frame 20 is provided with openings 62 of different sizes and shapes, and surrounding the same opening upon the upper face of the frame are the pockets 63 which are adapted to hold thevegetabl'es being cut as said ve tables are fed, y gravity ;to the some instances specially shaped pockets. ar'provided which removably fit within opening 52, whereby the vegetables is provided with the downward y-extendmg corrugated flange 67 which preventsv the slices from being thrown outwardly after being cut. The ga plate is provided with a central depresseg portion 68 into which the central gear 59 extends and rotates. Said depressed portion is provided with a downwardly-extending cylindrical housing 69 formed integral with the depressed 'portion '68, and said gage plate is cut away as indicated at 70, so asto allow the arms 42- carrying the knives to extend therein, whereby the gage plate is rotated with the arms. The sleeve 43 extends within the cylindrical housin 69 "and the set screw 45 passes ;throug the slot 70 in the housing, whereby 'the gage plate is further locked 'u on the sleeve or arms, and et, owing to t e slots it is allowed vertia? movement. "In order to support the gage plate upon the sleeve and providemeans for adjusting it up and down to regulate the thickness of the slice, I provide the lower'end of the-housing with a plate 71 secured thereon by screws 72. The said plate is 'ro'vided with a keyhole slot 73 through w ich the thumb-screw 74 passes, having a groove 75 by means of which the screw is swiveled to the plate "71, and by means of the keyhole slot the thumbscrew can be removed. The screw 74 extends upwardly and is screwed into the lower end of the shaft 37, whereby the gage plate is moved up and down to regulate the thickness of the slice.
The curved portion 45 of the arms 43 and 44 throws the gear to one side and thus allows a larger gear 59 and causes a more rapid rotation of the knives without in-'- forms a shield for the gear, but also forms abrace for the cutters or cutting disk as the cutters restupon the up er smooth surface and brace-the blades a j'acent their. outer cutting edge.
In order to rovide means for sharpening the blades wit out removing the same, or-
any of the other operative parts, I provide the lower face of the gage-plate adjacent each 3 cuttin disk with a downwardly-ere tending stu 76 upon which is provided the arm 77. The outer endof the arm carries a g'rindin substance as'indicated at 78. When it is desired to shar en the disks the arm 77 is swung upwar ly, the spring engaging the fiat end 81 of the arm holding the arm in approximately a vertical position with the grinding substance 78' against the cutting disk, and by operating rotates the beveled gear 42 and through the medium of the sleeve 40 which is locked to the shaft 37, the same is rotated in one direction while the arms 43 and 44 are rotated in the direction of the arrows shown 1n Figs.

The beveled gear 31 engaging the beveled gear 61 is rotated in the opposite direction to the shaft 37, and by means of the gears 59, '56 and 52 the cutters are rapidly rotated in the same direction as the gear 51, as shown by the arrow in Fi s. 2' and 3. In order to regu-l late the thickness of the cut the age plate 74 which brings the plate farther away from or closer to the knives and ,allows the contents of the pockets to drop farther down, or not so far, to regulate the thickness of the slice, as'the gage plate serves as a sup port for the contents of the pockets.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A slicing machine comprising a frame,
a rotary arm carried by the frame, a rotary knife carried by the outer end of the arm, a rotary gear carried by the frame and rotating in opposite direction to that of the arm, a gear carried by the knife and an intermediate gear meshing with said gears.
2. A slicing machine com rising a frame, a rotatable arm carried by t e frame, means for rotating the arm, a rotary knife carried by the arm, a rotatable gear carried by the frame, means for rotating the gear in a direction opposite the. rotation of the arm, a
gear carried by the knife and an interme-' diate gear carried by the arm and meshing with said gears.
3. A slicing machine comprising-a frame, a vertical shaft therein, an arm-carried by the shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a gear loosely mounted upon the shaft, means for rotatingthe gear in a direction opposite the rotation of the shaft, :1- gear carried by the knife, a gear carried by the arm and meshing with said gears. v
4. l-'t"slieer comprising legs, a frame pivotally supported by said legs, means for thumb screw a rotary arm below the frame, a rotary cutter carried by the outer end of the arm, and means for rotating the arm in one direction and rotating the knives of the arm in the opposite. direction, and a gage plate carried by the arm for regulating the thickness of the slice.
5. A slicer comprising legs, a frame between the legs and having pivots mounted in the legs, a set screw carried by one leg and engaging the frame for holding it in its adjusted position, meansfor limiting the oscillating movgement of the frame, an arm rotatably supported by the fame adjacent .the lower face, a cutter rotatably supported upon the upper face of said arm, and means I for rotating the arm and rotating the knife on the arm in a direction opposite to the movement thereof.
6. A sheer com r1s1n legs, a frame between the legs an having pivots mounted I in the legs, pins rigidly carried by the legs and extending inwardly into a segmental slot in the frame to limit the movement of the frame, a set. screw extending through one leg and engaging the frame for locking the same in its adjusted. position, an arm rotatably supported below the frame, a knife rotatably supported by the arm, means for rotating the arm, means for rotating the knife in any opposite direction to'the movement of the arm, a circular gage plate having openin s to receive the knife, and means for verticz ly adjusting said plate for regu lating the thickness of the slice.
7. A slicer comprising a frame having openings therein, shearing edges'surro'unding the-openings on the under side of the frame, an arm rotatably supported below the frame, a knife rotatably supported by the outer end of said arm, a gear carried by the knife, an idle gear carried by the arm and meshing with the first mentioned gear, and a gear loosely mounted upon the pivotof the arm and meshing with the idle gear, means for rotating the last mentioned gear, and means for rotating the arm, substantially as shown.
8. A slicer comprising a frame having openings therein, a yoke carried by the frame, a shaft having its upper end mounted in said yoke and 1ts lower end extending through the frame, a beveled gear for rotating the shaft, an arm rigidly carried by the shaft below the frame, a rotary knife mounted upon the upper face of the arm at its outer end, a sleeve loosely mounted upon the shaft and having a beveled gear above the frame directly below the beveled gear -on the shaft, a beveled gear between the two beveled gears and driving the same opposite directions, a gear carried by the lower end of the sleeve, an idle gear mounted upon 1 the arm and meshing with said gear, and a gear rlgidlyearrled by the knife and mesh ing with the idle gear, whereby the arm is revolved in one direction and the knife rotated thereon in the opposite direction.

A slicing machine, comprising a frame, a rotary arm, a rotary knife carried by the outer-end of said arm, a rotary gear carried by the frame and driven in the opposite direction to that of the arm, a gear carried. by the knife, an intermediate gear meshing withsaid gears and a gage plate supported by the arm and movable independent thereof.

A slicing Y machine, comprising a frame, a rotary arm carried by the frame, a rotary knife carried by the outer end of the arm, a gear carried by the frame, a-gear carried by the knife, an intermediate gear carried by the arm and meshing with the said gears and a gage plate. surrounding the knife and-supported by the arm and movable independent thereof. v

A slicer comprising an oscillating frame, a yoke-carried thereby, a shaft supported in the yoke and extending down through the frame, means for rotating said shaft','an arm secured at "its center to the ed upon thev shaft above the arm, an idle gear carried by the arm on oppositesides of the ear and meshing therewith, a rota knife supported in the outer ends ofsai arm,- a' gear carried by each knife and meshingwith' the idle gears, means for driving the gear loosely mounted upon the shaft in a .direction opposite to the shaft, a gage plate having a central depressed portion adapted to receive the shaft, a-plate closing I the lower end of said cylindrical" portion having ake'yhole slot therein, a thumb-screw screwed into the and having-an annular groove in which the plate rests, whereby the gage plate is vertically movable.
. 14. slicer comprising legs, a circular plate having openings therein, downwardly turned ears carried by opposite sides of the plate and having pivots carried thereby and mounted in the legs, pockets bolted to the upper face of the plate and surroundirg the opening, a downwardly-extending ange surrounding the opening on the lower face of the plate to form a shearing surface, a rotary arm revolving below the plate and disk knives rotatably mounted upon said arm and having shearing action with the flange of the plate.
15. A slicer comprising a frame, having openings therein, pockets above the openings, a flange carried by the under side of the frame andsurroundin the opening, an arm rotatably mounted below the frame disk knives rotatably mounted upon the arm,
means for rotating the knives-in a direction opposite to the movement of the arm, a gage plate supported by the arm, means for vertically ad usting said gage plate, and pivoted knife sharpening means carried by the lower face of the gage plate and adapted to be'swung in engagement with the knife and a spring for holding the sha ener in or out of engagement with the kni e.

A slicer comprising a frame, a shaft supported by the frame, an arm secured to the lower end. of the shaft, a gear loosely mounted upon the shaft above the arm, an idle gear carried by the arm and meshing with said gear, a rotary knife supported by the outer end of said arm agear carried by so I the knife and meshing with the idle ear,
