' 8 Claims. (Cl. 189--46) The invention relates to-'metallic door constructions and more particularly to a door including a jalousie section. It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction comprising an assembly of extruded members which, without machining, intert each other. It is a further objectV to include in this assembly a frame for the jalousie. With these objects in view lthe invention consists in the construction of certain elements of the door and the assembly of the same as hereinafter set forth.

As above described, the door is formedr from extruded members, preferably of aluminum alloy, and fashioned to intert each other without the necessityof machining operations. These members include stiles or the vertical rails of the door frame and a plurality of cross rails interitting said stiles. In addition there are the members for forming the jalousie frame, these also intertting members of the door frame. The stile A is formed of an extruded member of generally U-shaped cross section having front and rear side portions A' and A2 and a connecting portion A3 which forms the edge of the door. The inner faces of the side portions A and A2 have integral bearing strips A4 and A5 which project inward beyond the surface ofthe intermediate portion A6. Each strip portion A also has a longitudinal groove A'I therein. The Vstiles for the hinged and swinging edges of the door are the same in construction but the latter only is illustrated in the drawings. B is the top or head rail of the door and C the bottom rail adjacent to the threshold and which may be termed the sill. D is an intermediate rail which as hereinafter described is below the jalousie frame. VAll of these rails B, C and D are hollow and substantially rectangular in cross section. The rail B includes a front and rear portion B', B2, the top edge portionB3 and the bottom edge portion B4. The portions B' and B2 are spaced to t between the bearing strips A4 and A5 of the portions A and A2 of the stile members. Thus, the length of the member B is sufficient to extend into contact with the inner faces of the portions A3 of the stiles and form a reinforcement for the portions A and A2 thereof. The members A and B may be fastened to each other with plug type rivets. The member B is further provided with bead portions B5 which project outward beyond the sides B and B2 to overlap the ends of the portions A' and A2 of the stile and forming rounded corners. The portions B and B2 also project downward slightly beyond the cross portion B4 so as to form a downwardly opening groove B6 between the same. The member C is generally of the Vtrated but the other is of the same construction.

A weather strip may be secured to this member E either by engaging it with an undercut. groove E in the cross portion E2 thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, or by providing a depending angle flange E3 for securing the weather strip to engage a threshold F, as shown in Fig. 6. The intermediate member D is also generally similar to the member B but its bottom cross portionD' has a reverse U portion D2 centrally thereof similar to the portion C5 of the member C. The upper cross portion D3 has an upwardly opening groove D4 therein similar to the groove B6 in the member B and is also slightly inclined to correspond to the sill of the jalousie frame, as hereinafter described. All of these cross members B, C and D may be secured to the stiles by plug type rivets.
The door frame as thus far described has openings between the intermediate member Dland the top and bottom rails B and C respectively. The space between the rails D and C is closed by a panel or so-called kick plate G, which at its lower and upper edges engages the U-shaped portions C5 and D2 and is secured therein by a U-shaped border strip H also of U-shaped cross section v and extending around all sides of the panel. As shown in Fig. 5, the opening between the side portions A and A2 of the stile is closed by a plate-like member I extending between the rails C and D and which in cross section has a U-shaped central portion I and angle flanges l2 at its ends. Each flange I2 has an offset portion I3 fitting within a groove A'7 of the stile member A. The opening between the members B and D receives a jalousie frame of the following construction:

The outer side J4 of the U has a right angle ange J5 projecting outward therefrom and provided with an undercut groove J6 therein. The inner side l" terminates in an angle flange portion I8 adapted to receive a screen frame. To secure this member J to the stile one or more nut members K of rectangular form are engaged with the grooves A7 in the portions A and A2 of the stile A and a clamping screw K' connects the portions J2 with said nut. Only one of these side rails is illus- The top rail L of the jalousie frame is of a generally U cross-section and on the cross member L thereof there are spaced upwardly projecting ribs or beads L2 fitting in the groove or recess B6 in the member B and preventing relative horizontal movement between said rails B and L. A screw L3 engaging a threaded aperture in the portion B4 of the member B clamps the member L thereto and holds the ribs L against displacement from the groove B5. The front llange L4 of the member L has an undercut channel in its inner face for receiving a sealing strip. The bottom rail M or sill portion of the jalousie frame has similar attachment means to the cross rail D of the door frame, including spaced downwardly probers N for holding the glass N'.

What I claim as my invention is:
1. A metal door structure comprising an inwardly opening channel-shaped upright stile, the inner faces of opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile being provided adjacent the mouth and adjacent the base of the channel with opposed integral bearing strips, each of the opposed strips adjacent the mouth of said channel having an inwardly opening groove therein, top and bottom hori- Zontal rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so` that said rails form reinforcements for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a horizontal rail intermediate said top and bottom rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rail forms a further reinforcement for opposite sides of said channelshaped stile, opposed edges respectively of said bottom rail and of said intermediate rail having oppositely projecting opposed vertically opening channel portions, a kick plate closing the space between said bottom and intermediate rails and having its upper and lower edges within said opposed vertically extending channel portions, and a plate-like member closing the mouth of said channel-shaped stile between said bottom and intermediate rails, said plate-like member having portions within the grooves aforesaid in said bearing strips and having an inwardly projecting outwardly opening channel portion receiving the adjacent upright edge of said kick plate.
2. A metal door structure comprising an inwardly opening channel-shaped upright stile, the inner faces of opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile being provided adjacent the mouth and adjacent the base of the channel with opposed integral bearing strips, each of the opposed strips adjacent the mouth of said channel having an inwardly opening groove therein, top and bottom horizontal rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rails form reinforcements for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a horizontal rail intermediate said top and bottom rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rail forms a further reinforcement for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a frame within the space between said top and intermediate rails, said frame having an upright inwardly opening channel-shaped side rail, the base of said side rail having spaced grooves therein receiving the inner edges of said inwardly opening channel-shaped stile, and means securing said frarne to said stile, including transversely extending members within said channelshaped stile and having their opposite upright edges within the grooves aforesaid in said bearing strips, and clamping elements extending through the base aforesaid of '4 said channel-shaped side rail and engaging said transversely extending members.

A metal door structure comprising an inwardly opening channel-shaped upright stile, the inner faces of opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile being provided adjacent the mouth and adjacent the base of the channel with opposed integral bearing strips, each of the opposed strips adjacent the mouth of said channel having an inwardly opening groove therein, top and bottom horizontal rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rails form reinforcements for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a horizontal rail intermediate said top and bottom rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and tting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rail forms a further reinforcement for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, opposed edges respectively of said bottom rail and of said intermediate rail having oppositely projecting opposed vertically opening channel portions, a kick plate closing the space between said bottom and intermediate rails and having its upper and lower edges within said opposed vertically extending channel portions, a plate-like member closing the mouth of said channel-shaped stile between said bottom and intermediate rails, said plate-like member having portions within the grooves aforesaid in said bearing strips and having an inwardly projecting outwardly opening channel portion receiving the adjacent upright edge of said kick plate, a frame within the space between said top and intermediate rails, said frame having an upright inwardly opening channel-shaped side rail, the base of said side rail being interlocked with the inner edges of said inwardly opening channel-shaped stile, and means securing said frame to said stile, including transversely extending members within said channel-shaped stile and having their opposite upright edges within the grooves aforesaid in Vsaid bearing strips, and clamping elements extending through the base aforesaid of said channel-shaped side rail and engaging said transversely extending members. y 4. A metal door structure comprising an inwardly opening channel-shaped upright stile, the inner faces of opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile being provided adjacent the mouth and adjacent the base of the -channel with opposed integral bearing strips, each of the opposed strips adjacent the mouth of said channel having an inwardly opening groove therein, top and bottom horizontal rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and tting snugly against Asaid opposed bearing strips so that said rails form reinforcements for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a horizontal rail intermediate said top and bottom rails extending into said channelshaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rail forms a further reinforcement for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a frame within the space between said top and intermediate rails, said frame having an upright inwardly opening channel-shaped side rail, and provided at the upper and lower ends of said side rail with top and bottom substantially horizontal rails, the base of said side rail being interlocked' with the inner edges of said inwardly opening channel-shaped stile, means securing said frame to said stile, including transversely extending members within said channel-shaped stile and having their opposite upright edges within the grooves aforesaid in said bearing strips, clamping elements extending through the base aforesaid of said channel-shaped side rail and engaging said transversely extending members, opposite sides of the top rail of said door projecting downwardly beyond the bottom edge thereof and forming therewith a downwardly opening groove, opposite sides of the intermediate rail of said door projecting upwardly beyond the upper edge thereof and forming therewith an upwardly opening groove, the top rail of 4Said frame having spaced upwardly projecting ribs fitting into said downwardly opening groove and preventing relative horizontal movement between the top rails rspectively of said door and of said frame, the bottom rail of said frame having spaced downwardly projecting ribs tting into said upwardly opening groove and preventing relative horizontal movement between the intermediate rail of said door and the bottom rail of said frame, and` means holding the spaced projections aforesaid against displacement, including fastening elements respectively `extending thro-ugh the top and bottom rails of said frame and engaging the adjacent edges of said top and intermediate rails of said door.

A metal door structure comprising an inwardly opening channel-shaped upright stile, the inner faces of opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile being provided adiacent the mouth and adjacent the base of the channel with opposed integral bearing strips, each of the opposed strips adjacent the mouth of said channel having an inwardly opening groove therein, top and .bottom horizontal rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rails form reinforcements for opposite sides of 6 with opposed integral bearing strips, each of the opposed strips adjacent the mouth of said channel having an inwardly opening groove therein, top and bottom horizontal rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rails form reinforcements for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a horizontal rail intermediate said top and bottom railsV extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rail forms a further reinforcement for opposite sides of said channelshaped stile, a frame within the space between said top j and intermediate rails, said frame having an upright insaid channel-shaped stile, a horizontal rail intermediate v said top and bottom rails and extending into said channelshaped upright stile between. and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rail forms a further reinforcement for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a frame within the space between said top and intervmediate rails, said frame having an upright inwardly opening channel-shaped side rail, and provided at the upper and lower ends of said side rail with top and bottom substantially horizontal rails, the base of said side rail being interlocked with. the inner edges of said inwardly opening channel-shaped stile, means securing said frame to said stile, including transversely extending members within said channel-shaped stile and having their opposite upright edges within the grooves aforesaid in said bearing strips, clamping elements extending through the base aforesaid of said channel-shaped side rail and engaging said transversely extending members, the bottom edge of the top rail of said door being provided with a downwardly opening groove, the upper edge of the intermediate rail of said door being provided with an upwardly opening groove, the top rail of said frame having spaced upwardly projecting ribs fitting into said downwardly Opening groove and preventing relative horizontal movement between the top rails respectively of said door and said frame, the bottom rail of said frame having spaced downwardly projecting ribs fitting into Vsaid upwardly opening groove and preventing relative horizontal movement between the intermediate rail of said door and the bottom rail of said frame, and means holding the spaced projections aforesaid against displacement, including fasteners respectively extending through the top and bottom rails of said frame and engaging the adjacent edges of said top and intermediate rails of said door.

A metal door structure comprising an inwardly opening channel-shaped upright stile, a horizontal rail extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against opposite sides thereof so that said rail forms a reinforcement for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a horizontal web within and connected to opposite sides of said rail intermediate the upper and lower edges thereof, and an upwardly opening expander member of U-cross section within said rail and cooperating with said web to form a substantially box-like reinforcement for said rail, the lower edge of said rail being at the lower end of said stile, and the base of said U-shaped expander member being at the lower edge of said rail'and having means for holding a weather-strip engageable with a threshold.

A metal door structure comprising an inwardly opening channel-shaped upright stile, the inner faces of opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile being provided ad- 1jacent the mouth and adjacent the base of the channel wardly opening channel-shaped side rail, opposite sides of the channel-shapedrside rail of said frame having anges respectively for holding a weather-strip and a screen frame, the base of Said side rail being interlocked with the inner edges of Said inwardly opening channelshaped stile, means securing said frame to said stile including members within said channel-shaped stile and engaging the grooves aforesaid in said bearing strips, and means extending through the base aforesaid of said channel-shaped side rail and engaging said members.

A metal door structure comprising an inwardly opening channel-shaped upright stile, the inner faces of opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile being provided adjacent the mouth and adjacent the base of the channel with opposed integral bearing strips, each of the opposed strips adjacent the mouth of said channel having an inwardly opening groove therein, top and bottom horizontal rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rails form reinforcements for opposite sides of said channel-shaped stile, a horizontal rail intermediate said top and bottom rails extending into said channel-shaped upright stile between and fitting snugly against said opposed bearing strips so that said rail forms a further reinforcement for opposite sides of said channelshaped stile, opposed edges respectively of said bottom rail and of said intermediate rail having oppositely projecting opposed vertically opening channel portions, a kick plate closing the space between said bottom and intermediate rails and having its upper and lower edges within said opposed vertically extending channel portions, a plate-like member closing the mouth of said channelshaped stile between said bottom and intermediate rails, said plate-like member having portions within the grooves aforesaid in said bearing strips and having an inwardly projecting outwardly opening channel portion receiving the adjacent upright edge of said kick plate, a, horizontal web within and connected to opposite sides of said bottom rail intermediate the upper and lower edges thereof, and an upwardly opening expander member of U-cross section within said bottom rail and cooperating with said web to form a substantially box-like reinforcement for said bottom rail, the lower edge of said bottom rail being at the lower end of said stile, and the base of said U-shaped expander member being at the lower edge of said bottom rail and having means for holding a weather-strip engageable with a threshold.
