DISPENSERS FOR` ROLLED SHEET MATERIAL Filed Feb. '25, 1955 IN V EN TOR.
OU/5 55H6 BY A United States Patent O DISPENSERS FOR ROLLED SHEET MATERIAL Louis Berg, Birmingham, Mich.
Application February 25, 1955, Serial No. 490,667
2 Claims. (Cl. 312-39) This invention relates to dispensers, and in particular to improved means for storing and dispensing sheet material such as thin cellophane, Saran, wax paper or the like which is dicult to handle and tear.
Cellophane, Saran, wax paper and other thin material used for wrapping is generally furnished in rolls cornprising a paperboard core onto which a number of yards of the thin material is wrapped. The thinner the material, the tougher the material and the smoother the surface thereof, the more difculty is encountered in dispensing the material from the roll and in tearing the dispensed portion from the roll.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a dispenser for storing thin rolled sheet material and dis* pensing the desired lengths of material therefrom including means for holding the roll of material firmly against rotation in the dispenser during the tearing of a desired length therefrom. 1
A further object of the invention is to provide in a dispenser for rolled sheet material means associated with a pivoted cutter bar for engaging the roll of sheet material and preventing the rotation of the roll of material within the dispenser responsive to the tearing of the material dispensed from the material remaining on the roll and in the dispenser.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a front elevational View of a dispenser for rolled sheet material embodying the invention, certain portions being successively broken away to illustrate the construction clearly.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view, also with certain portions successively broken away.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 showing a roll of sheet material positioned in the dispenser with a portion of the sheet material withdrawn therefrom.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 3 showing the portion of the `sheet material withdrawn from the dispenser being torn along the cutting edge of the cutter-lever bar, the lever arm of the said cutter'- lever bar having urged the roll of sheet material in nonrotatable position.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like numerals refer to like and corresponding .parts throughout the several views, the dispenser disclosed in the dra-wings for the purpose of illustrating the invention comprises a back 11, bottom 12, front 13 and ends 14 forming an elongated trough shaped box. A cover 15 having suitable end ears 150 is pivoted onto the upper rear portion of the ends 14 by such suitable means as shouldered rivets 16.
A cutter-lever bar 17 having a cutter portion 18, a lever portion 19 and suitable end ears 170 is pivoted onto the upper front portion of the ends 14 by such suitable means as shouldered rivets 20. The .cutter portion 18 of the cutter-lever bar 17 extends forwardly of and in spaced relationship over the upper edge 130 of the front 13 of ICC the dispenser. The outer edge of the said cutter portion of the cutter-lever bar 17 is sharply serrated or toothed to provide a cutting edge 180. The lever portion 19 of the cutter-lever bar 17 depends into the dispenser box and is dished at 190 to conform generally to the curvature of a roll 210 of sheet material 21 to be dispensed. The said roll of sheet material usually consists of a paperboard core 24 over which the sheet material 21 iswound.
The back 11 of the dispenser 10 is preferably debossed to provide one or more arcuate bases 22 for friction pads 23 which may be of rubber or any suitable friction material to prevent the roll 210 from turning when urged thereagainst. Obviously, the lever portion 190 of the cutter-lever bar 17 need only be as wide as the friction -pads 23 and the arcuate bases 22. Also, if desired, the arcuate bases 22 may be suitably roughened to provide a friction Isurface in lieu of the friction pads 23, although for .some types of sheet material a friction pad 23 is required.
yIn Fig. 3, the dispenser 10 is shown with all of its parts in their normal attitude wherein sheet material 21 may be readily withdrawn from the roll 210 between the front edge 1500 of the cover 15 and the top of the cutter portion 18 of the vcutter-leverbar 17. 'Phe front edge 1500 of the cover 15 rests on the top of the said cutter portion 18 of the cutter-lever bar 17 forward of the pivots 20 supporting the same, and the lever portion 19 of the said cutter-lever bar 17 depends freely into the dispenser 10.
By reference to Fig. 4, it will be observed that downwardpressure applied to the cutter portion 18 of the cutter-lever bar 17 from downward pressure applied onto the cover 15 or by the downward pressure applied onto the cutter-portion 18 of the cutter-lever bar responsive to the tearing of sheet material von the cutter edge thereof, or a combination of both, the cutter-lever bar 17 pivots about its pivots 20 and causes the lever portion'19 thereof to urge the roll I210 rmly against the friction 'pad or pads 23. This holding of the roll 210 firmly against turning within the dispenser permits the dispensed portion 2100 of the rolled sheet material to be torn neatly from the dispenser along the cutting edge 180 of the cutter portion 18 of the cutter-lever bar 17.
The more the downward pressure on the cover 15 and/ or the cutter portion 18 4of the cutter-lever bar 17, the more firmly the rolled sheet material being dispensed is held while being torn from the dispenser.
Although but one embodiment of the invention has been disclosed and described in detail, it is obvious that many changesmay be made in the size, shape, arrangement and detail of the various elements of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A dispenser for rolled sheet material comprising a container into which a roll of sheet material is freely positioned, said container including a front, a back, sides and a top pivoted to open from the front of the container,
and a cutter-lever bar pivotally mounted on the ends of said container on a transverse axis rearwardly of the top of the front thereof, said container including a cutter portion and a lever portion, the said lever portion normally depending within said container adjacent the front thereof, the said cutter portion normally extending from said container in spaced relationship above the upper edge of the front thereof, the said cutter portion having a cutting edge formed at the outer edge thereof, sheet material from said roll extending-out of and withdrawable from said container between the front edge of said pivoted top and the cutter portion of said cutter-lever bar, said lever portion of said cutter-lever bar being formed to engage said roll of sheet material and bias it in nonturnable relationship against the back of the container responsive to pressure vapplied on the cutter `portion of said cutter-lever bar responsive to manual pressure applied on the pivoted cover of said container during the tearing of sheet material from said roll along the said cutting edge of said cutter bar.
12. Ylrdispenser for rolled ,sheet material comprisinga container` ,into which a-roll of. sheety material is freelyvpositioned, said containerincluding a front, a backside s and l`atop pivoted 4toppen from the front of Athe container, Vanda. cutter-lever bar pivotally mounted on theends of 4said container lonaftransverse aXis rearwardlyof thetop ofthe front thereof, saidcontainerl including a cutter portionand a vleverportion, the said lever portion normally depending withinsaid container adjacent the frontthereof, the said cutter ,portion K-norfrnally .extending ,from :said `container in .spacedrelationship above theupper edgeof the, front thereogthezsaid eutterv-portonhaving Va cutting edge'formed at tlie, outenedgethereoffsheet material from vsaid rollextending outfofsaid container oversaidcutterlevenbar and under the front edge of said cover, an arcuate friction element at the inside of the back of said container opposite said roll of sheet material, said -lever portion of said cutter-lever bar being arcuately formed to engage said roll of sheet material and bias it in nonturnable relationship diametrically against said friction element responsive to pressure applied on the cutter portion of said lever bar through manual downward pressure on said cover during the tearing of sheet material from said-roll along the saideutting .edge of said cutter bar.
