HARNEssW-PAD PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming `part of `-I I`.\,atters Patent No. 283,305, dated August I4, 1883. nppncationied .f ipniaouass.` (Nomodei.) f
To all whom it may concern useful improvements in harness-pad presses,
`Be it known that I, LEwis H. URNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nevada, in the county of Vernon andv Statemof `Missouri, Ahave invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Harness-Pad Press and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,- `clear, and exact description of the same,
i reference being hadto the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specifiation, and tothe letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of lmy invention. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the core or shaping-iron.
This invention relates to certain new and the object thereof `being to construct such a vhereinafter described.
device whereby a perfectly-shaped pad may be obtained free from wrinkles, as by the application of my invention all the stretch is taken out of the leather, the pressure thereon being brought to bear in two directions, vertically and laterally; also, when the padpiece is `suitably pressed `and crimped the same is held in placefor tacking to the frame, preparatory to stuffing andwstitching, without removing said pad from the press. These objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings and In the drawings, A represents the mold or press, formed with a depression similar in shape to the contour of the pad. i VAt each end, upon one or both sides of this mold or press, are guide-rods a, screw-threaded at their outer ends, and upon which work a follower, B,` operated by a .clamping-screw, G, having its bearing in a brace-bar, D, adjustable'on the guide-rods by means of the nuts b, working on their screw-threaded ends.
The leather to be pressed is placed in the depression of the mold or press, and a core or Shaping-irOmJE, `similar in shape to the form of said depression,.is forced down therefon by means of a hammer, said `core or shaping-iron being made solid, so that an even pressure maybe exerted on all portions of the leather to prevent the same from beingimperfectly stretched, and thereby forming wrinkles, as is frequently the result when the core or shaping-iron is made hollow, such ordinary use. After the leather has been above described means the follower B is brought tightly up against the same by means of the clamping-screw C, this side screw pressure taking all` the remaining stretch and wrinkles out of the leather, and leaving a perfect well-shaped pad.` By taking off the side or lateral pressure by means of the screw the i core or shaping-iron E is readily removed and yond the said tack-iron, and frame is now bent down and tacked near the edge of the frame. After the pad-shape has been tacked. to the frame the side pressure is released, and said frame with the pad-shape secured thereto and the tack-iron are removed from the press or mold. The tack-iron is now drawn out from between the pad-shape and frame, and the pad is ready for stuffing and stitching, the pad being free from all wrinkles and shape.
Having nowV fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isd l. The pad-press A, formed or cast of a single piece of metal, as shown, and provided with staple d at its end, in combination with the solid core or shaping-iron E and tack-iron F, having projection c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
. 2. The pad-press A of the form shown, having lateral screw-threaded guide-rods a, nuts Z1, and providedwith the staple d, in combination withthe core or shaping-iron E, tackperfect in' iron F, provided with the projection c, follower B, brace-bar D, and clamping-screw O, operating substantially as and `for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have ,y hereunto subscribed my'name in the presence of two witnesses LEWIS vH. URNER.
