Description
No. 642,4!5. I Patented Jan. 30, 1900.
w. J. BALL.
RIVETING DEVICE.
(Application filed Apr. 20, 1899.)
(No Modei.)
W WARREN J BALL.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC WARREN J. BALL, OF SALEM, OHIO.
RIVETING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 642,415, dated January 30, 1900.
Application filed April 20,1 8 9 9.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN J. BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riveting-Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a section on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front end View. Fig.4 is a detached view of the plunger and its head. Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the plate removed. Fig. 6 is a ,view showing a portion of the operating lever or-handle and illustrating the fulcrumflange. Fig. 7 is a side elevation showing the opposite side from that illustrated in Fig. 5, also showing the plate removed. Fig. 8 is a vertical section through line 00 :0, Fig. 5. Fig. 9 is a detached View showing a portion of the frame. Fig. 10 is-a similar view showing a slight modification from that shown in Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a view showing a portion of the operating lever or handle. Fig. 12 is a detached view of the handle-connecting bolt.
The present invention has relation to riveting-tools; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals represent corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the frame or head, which is substantially of the form shown, and, as shown, it is provided with the integral handle or arm 2. The head or frame 1 is provided with the curved arm 3, which extends upward and forward and is provided with a screw-threaded aperture to receive and hold the die 4. Upon the upper side and at the forward end thereof is located the extension 5, which extension is provided with the aperture 6, said aperture being for thepurpose of forming a receptacle for rivets.
Serial No. 713,722. (No model.)
with the head 8, which head is provided with a socket 9, said socket being for the purpose hereinafter described.
The head 1 is provided with the opening 10, said opening being bounded upon its rear sidewith the web or flange 11, which flange is provided with the space 12, located between projections or shoulders formed upon the edge of the flange or web.
The operating handle or lever 13 is located substantially as shown in Figs. 1, 5, and 7 when placed in its normal position, and, as shown, its extreme front end is provided with the head 14, which head is formed of a size and shape to correspond substantially with the size and shape of the socket 9, formed in the plunger-head 8, said head being connected to the plunger 6 by passing the head in at the side of the socket, said socket being formed substantially as shown in Fig. 4, and, as shown, the flanges 15, forming said socket, are so located that the head 14 cannot be moved endwise inde pendent of the head after. it has been connected.
Upon one side of the operating-handle 13 and at the rear of the head 14 is located the fulcrum-flange, which gear-segment is seated against the end of the web 11 and is so formed that the lever or handle 13 can be moved up and down at its rear end, which in turn moves the front or forwardend of the lever up and down, carrying with it the plunger 7, said plunger being carried in a true vertical line, or, in other words, a true reciprocating motion being given to said plunger.
For the purpose of preventing any lateral displacement of the plunger 7 and its head and also for the purpose of assisting in holding the operating lever or handle 13 the side plates 17 are provided, which plates are clamped against the sides of the frame by means of the clamping-bolt 18, said clamping bolt being located substantially as shown in Fig. 1.
In the event it is desired to dispense with the plates 17 the web 11 is provided with the curved slot 19 and the lever or handle loosely connected to the web by means of the buttonbolt 20, which button-bolt is passed through the curved slot and turned into the screwthreaded aperture 21, formed in the operating handle or lever 13.
For the purpose of assisting in holding the tool in a true vertical position the flanges 22 may be formed and located as illustrated in the drawings.
For the purpose of automatically elevating the operating lever or handle 13 and depressing the plunger the spring 23 is provided, said spring being located around the plunger, as illustrated in the drawings.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a riveting-tool the combination with a frame, and a die supported thereby, of a plunger adapted to reciprocate toward and from said die, an operating-lever connected at one end of said plunger, a gear-segment on said lever, and a rack on the frame with which the gear-segment engages, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a frame or head provided with an integral handle, an opening located within-the frame or head, an operatinglever provided with a rearWardly-extending gear-segment, and rack-teeth arranged to engage with the gear-segment, a plunger carried by the operating-lever and an arm formed integral with the frame or head and provided with an adjustable die located above the plunger, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. a
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presen cc of two Witnesses.
W'ARREN J. BALL.
