E. G. LATTA.
I TRAGE CARRIER. N0, 283,260. Patented Aug, 14, 1883.
9 )IIIIIIIIIIIIIII'IIIIIIIIII!IIIIIIIIIIIi[III/llfl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC EMMIT e.-LATrA, or FRIENDSHIP, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF'TWO-THIRDS mo ADRIAN o. LATTA, OF sAME rLAeE, AND HARVEY D. BLAKESLEE,
OF BUFFALO, NEWV YORK.
TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart .of Letters Patent No. 283,260, dated August 14, 1883,
' Application filed Ma 3,1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be'it known that I, EMMIT-G. LATTA, of Friendship, in the county of Allegany and State of NewYork, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trace-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved trace carrier which can be applied to the harness after the latter is made up without disarranging the harness, and which can be cheaply cast of malleable iron.
My invention consists -of the improvements whichwill be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. A
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved trace-carrier applied to the harness. Fig. 2isadetached plan View of the trace-carrier. Fig. 3 is a crosssection in line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. & isa rear elevation of the trace-carrier. Fig. 5 is a plan .view, showing a modified construction of the trace carrier.
Like letters ofreference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the back-strap, Bthe crupper-strap, and C G the hip-straps. D is the ring to whiehthe ends of these straps are securedby sewing.
E is the open frame of the trace-carrier, and F F two hooks projecting rearwardly from the frame E and adapted to support the cockeyes of the traces. As represented in Figs. 1 to 4, the
open frame E is composed of cross-bars f and side bars, which together constitute an oblong open frame extending across the ring D.
The cross-bars f are. provided on their. under sides with notches or recesses 72, by which the cross-bars rest upon the ring, and wherebythe frame is held on the ring against lateral dis:
placement. The side bars, are depressed below the cross-bars f and the ring D sufficiently to permit the hip-straps O to pass over the side bars, g, in their natural position, as represented in Figs, 1 and 3,whereby the-frame E is held down upon the ring D. The central portions of the cross-bars f are bent inwardly to clear the ends of the back-strap A and erupper-strap B.
The trace-carrier is applied to the harness by simply drawing the hipstrap 0 through the open frame E and seating the latter on the ring D, whereby by arranging the hip-straps in their ordinary position the .traeecarrier is firmly secured in place. This construction enables the harness-maker to make up theharness without the trace-carrier and to apply a trace-carrier when desired, and it also permits the use of the trace-carrier on old harness which is not made with special reference to the employment of a trace-carrier.
60 In the modified construction represented in Fig. 5 the frame E extends around the ring D,
and is provided with loops i, through which the hip-straps pass. WVhen the straps are attached to the ring D in a different form from 5 that shown in the drawings, the side bars or loops of the carrier-frame are adapted to the changed position of the straps.
I claim as my invention 1. A detachable trace-carrier composed-of 7o the frame E, having two hooks, FF, on its lower side, and provided with raised cross bars f f, adapted to pass over the ring D, and depressed side bars, 9 9, adapted to pass under the hip-straps, substantially as set forth. 7 5 2. The combination, with the ring D and g the harness-straps secured thereto, of a detaohable" tracecarrier composed of a frame,. E, and hooks or loops F, substantially as set forth.
so 3. The combination, with the ring D, of a trace-carrier composed of hooks Fand an open frame having the cross-bars f seated on the ring D, and its end bars, arranged to pass underneath the hip-straps, substantially as set 85 forth.
EMMIT G. LATTA.
