Zigaretten-Papier-Kommanditgesellschaft Behr, Jaun & Co., Vienna, Austria Application May 2S, 1955, Serial No. 511,004 Claims priority, application Austria May 26, 1954 1 Claim. (Cl. 20d-47) combination package in which the cigarette paper is contained besides the tobacco.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a combination package containing cigarette paper besides tobacco from which the tobacco as well as the cigarette paper can be easily removed.
An additional object of the present invention is to form such a combination package in a simple manner so that it can be produced at a very economical price.
It is yet another object of the present invention to make such a combination package in which the cigarette paper inserted in the package stitfens the package.
With the above objects in View, the present invention mainly consists in a package comprising a tubular member having opposite end edges, and a pair of transverse walls extending transverse through the tubular member and 'being attached along their edges to the tubular member, at least one of the transverse walls extending within the tubular member spaced from the opposite edges of the same so that the tubular member and the pair of transverse walls form a closed first chamber and the one wall and the tubular member form an open second chamber.
The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in particular in the appended claim. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a combination package according to the present invention showing also a package of cigarette paper ready to be inserted in said combination package;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a modification of such a combination package; and
Fig. 3 is a partial sectional View of another modification of a package according to the present invention.
Referring now to the drawings and more specifically to Fig. l which shows a combination package according to the present invention generally designated with 1. This package is formed by a tubular member 3 preferably of rectangular cross section and being closed by a pair of transverse walls 2 extending transversely through the tubular member and being attached along their edges to the tubular member. One of the transverse walls is spaced from the upper edge 9 of the tubular member, as
- at the bottom of the package.
cross section of the open chamber 10 is formed in such a way that a package of cigarette paper 4 can be easily` fitted into this open chamber.
This basic form of a combination package illustrated in Fig. 1, may be modified in various ways. One such modification is shown in Fig. 2 in which instead of only one cigarette paper package a pair of cigarettepaper packages 4 may be inserted at both ends of the prismatic tobacco container. For this purpose the transverse walls 2 by which the package is closed are both set inside the top and bottom edges 9, 9', respectively, so that the package lforms between the transversely extending closure walls 2 a closed chamber 12 adapted to contain cigarette tobacco and two open chambers 10, 10', respectively located at both ends of the tubular member. A pair of cigarette paper packages is inserted in the open chambers 10, 10', respectively. Fig. 2 illustrates also clearly how the transverse walls 2, edges of the tubular member 3 are formed. Preferably, the tubular member 3 has end portions which are joined to lthe main body of the tubular member and are folded along a fold line located along the end edges 9,9',` respectively. The open chamber 10 shown at the bottom of the package 1 in Fig. 2 is formed by folding the end portion along a fold line located at the bottom edge 9 of the package to form a first portion 14 extending along the main ybody of the tubular member 3 and a second portion 2' transverse through the tubular member 3 and forming the wall between the closed chamber 12 adapted to contain the cigarette tobacco and the open chamber 10' A package of cigarette 8 from which the individual cigarette papers 6 can be removed one by one. v erably provided with a cover 5 attached to the package and serving to close the slot 8 of the same. The cigarette paper package 4' is, when the finished and filled combination package is shipped, preferably attached tothe tubular member 3 by means of a paper strip 7 pasted to the tubu- 'l lar member and extending across the cigarette paper package to secure the same to the tubular member. This strip 7 is shown in Fig. 2 torn open so that the cover 5 of the cigarette paper package can be lifted and `the cigarette paper removed from the package and the cigarette paper package 4' can also be removed from the chamber 10 so that the wall 2' can be torn and access to the tobacco in the closed chamber 12 can be obtained.
The upper portion of the combination container illustrated in Fig. 2 is formed slightly different from the lower portion of the same. The end portion of the tubular member forming the upper part of the combination container is bent along a first fold line located at the upper edge 9 of the container to extend from this fold line transverse to the tubular member 3 and being folded upon itself along a second fold line 16 to form a first portion 18 extending partly across the tubular member and then folded substantially along the first fold line to form a second portion 20 extending along the inner surface of the tubular member 3 and then folded to form a third portion extending transverse through the tubular member 3 and forming the upper closure wall 2. A cigarette paper package 4 is inserted in the thus formed upper open chamber 10 and securely held therein by the portion 18 extending partly across the same. This modification shown in Fig. 2 is especially used for large packages which contain a con- 2 being spaced from the end The cigarette package 4 is pref-f Aassura -s'iderable amount o'f cigarette tobacco. The cigarette paper package 4can rberemoved from the package'l Aafter the paper strip 7 is torn open whereas the cigarette paper package 4 remains permanently attached to the package 1. This package 4 v'serves therefore'to 4stiften the package '1 sotthatfthis package'willretain its shape during a relatively`long' period of usage. 'Instead of Aforming a combination package containing'two cigarettepaper packages, one of them permanently attached and one of them removably attached-tothe container 1 as shown in Fig. 2, it is of course possible to form both open chambers inthe way the bottom chamberis shown in Fig. 2 whereby both cigarette paper packages are removable from the conta'incrl.
'Instead of securing lone of the cigarettepaper packages to the container 1 by 'means of `inwardly bent rim portions 18,as shown on the top of'Fig. 2, it is also possible to simply paste the cigarette paper package preferably to the transverse wall 2.
In 'countries `where a stamp tax is applied such a tax stamp can'also be'used'to secure the package of cigarette paper to the package A1 instead of the paper strip 7 shown in Fig.2.
Another way of combining cigarette papers with the package 1 is yillustrated in Fig. 3 which shows a cross section through one end of rsuch a package. This end of the package is provided with an open chamber 10 formed in the same way 'as the open chamber at the bottom of Fig. 2 and a plurality of cigarette papers 6 is inserted directly into this open chamber and separated from the partly shown closed chamber 12 containing the cigarette tobacco only by a transverse Wall 2. The cigarette papers are maintained in this open chamber 10 by a separate cover member .22 pasted Vto the outside Of the tubular member 3 and extending across the open end ofthe open chamber. This cover member Z2 is again preferably provided with a slot 8 through which the cigarette papers may be removed from the open chamber one by one.
The package is preferably made of paper but any other thin sheetmaterial, for instance plastic may be used. It desired, a separate insulating sheet may be inserted between the package of cigarette paper and the transverse wall closing the closed chamber 12 to prevent, kin the case thatthe cigarette paper is made with a gummed edge, moisture contained in the tobacco to penetrate to the cigarette paper.
In use, the cigarettepaper package removably inserted into the package 1 is preferably removed from the open chamber formed in the kpackage and the transverse, wall forming the bottom of this open chamber is torn open so that the tobacco contained in the closed chamber 12 can be removed as desired. The opening made in the transverse wall by tearing it open is then closed by inserting the cigarette paper package again in the open chamber. In this way, the cigarette paper package forms also a cover for closing the opening in the tobacco chamber after the lirst use ofthe package.
It wil be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of packages diering from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodied in a combination package for tobacco and cigarette paper, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modiiications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention. t
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claim.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A package comprising, in combination, a tubular member made of thin sheet material and having a main body and opposite end portions, at least one of said end portions being joined to the main body of said tubular member along a rst fold line and having a rst portion folded on said first fold line and extending from said first fold line transverse to the tubular member partly across the same to a second fold line and being folded upon itself along saidsecond fold line to return to said iirst fold line, a second portion folded to extend along the inner surface of said tubular member and a third portion folded to extend transverse through said tubular member and forming a first transverse wall spaced from said fold line and defining with said rst folded end portion of said tubular member a partly open chamber; and the other of said end portions folded to extend transverse to said tubular member and forming a second transverse wall so that said first l and second transverse walls close said tubularmember to form a closed chamber.
