UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. H. ROLLINS, OF \VAPELLO, IOYVA.
VAPOR-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,306, dated May 15, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. H. RoLLINs, of Wapello, in the county of Louisa and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Vapor-Lamp; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a sectional elevation of my invention.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the font of the lamp supported by a tube B, and bracket C, and D, is a tube which communicates with the tube B, at one end and with a chamber E, at the other. The tube D, is provided with a cock F, by which the flow of the fluid from the font A, into the chamber E, may be regulated as occasion may require. The chamber E, is comparatively small and of dome-shape and its bottom a, is screwed into it so that it may be readily removed when necessary for the purpose of cleansing the chamber. In the upper part of the chamber E, a gauze wire protector b, is placed, and a siphon-shaped tube F, is attached to the upper part of the chamber E, said tube F, extending down some distance below the chamber E, and curved in a horizontal position with a burner G, attached to its end the burner being in the same vertical line with the chamber E, as shown clearly in the drawing.
The bottom a, of the chamber E, is provided with a flanch c, which, when the bottom is screwed into the chamber, projects beyond the latter so that chains (Z, may be attached thereto, the lower ends of the chains being attached to a metallic band H, provided with a suitable clasp or fastening that will admit of the band being increased or diminished in diameter and secured at the proper point. This band encompasses a flanch e, at the upper part of the glass globe I, within which is the burner G. The adjustability of the band II, as regards size admits of the globe I, being readily aflixed to and detached from it. By this arrangemient it will be seen that the light radiating from the burner will be unobstructed both in a horizontal and downward direction. The flame volatilizes the fluid in E, the cock F, being so turned as to admit a proper flow through D, into E, and the protector b, prevents any flame passing into the chamber E, a contingency which might occur in case of any leakage in the tube F, in the vicinity of the chamber E.
All lamps provided with vaporizing chambers and havin the illuminating flame below have not, so ar as I am aware, been provided with a globe so arranged as not to cast a shade nor provided with a wiregauze protector to prevent the passage of any flame into the chamber E, a contingency otherwise liable to occur in case of a leakage of tube F, and the relative position of the chamber E, burner G, and tube F.
I do not claim the vaporizing chamber E, nor the relative position therewith of the burner G, so that the illuminating flame will volatilize the fluid in E,nor do I claim a wire-gauze protector I), applied to a lamp for burning volatile hydro-carbons irrespective of the adaptation herein shown; but
Having thus described my invention, what I do clalm as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the vaporizing chamber E, of the removable flanched screw bottom a, and globe I, so that the globe will be supported or hung from said bottom, all as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
