mbnum U IT D STATES PATENT 01"Ji'ICLIEla DAVID DIGKSON, OF RAGLAN, ONTARIO, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. [84,763, dated November 28, 1876; application filed July'l, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, DAvIoDIoKsoN, of Raglan, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a vertical section on line a: w in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the burner.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The objectof my invention is to do away with that portion of the chimney which is most liable to fracture from unequal expansion, and substitute therefor a metallic top, which may also answer the purpose of a reflector; and, further, to furnish an eifective device for retaining the parts composing the chimney in place.
A is a portion of an ordinary lamp-burner, consisting of the wick-tube a and the part b, which screws into the lamp. B is a perforated disk, which is cut away in the center to receive the wick-tube a, and is supported by the short tubes 0, which are attached to it in such a way as to leave the mouth of the tube outside the disk B. The lower ends of the tubes 0 are attached to the part b. C is a short cylinder of glass, which is open at both ends, and rests on the disk B. D is a metallic top, which is in form a truncated cone.
It may be made from any sheet metal that will retain its luster, or it may be silver or nickel plated. The top D shuts a small distance over the top of the glass cylinder 0', and is retained in place by the spiral springs d, which engage with hook 6, attached to the top D,
and are fastened at their lower ends in the bottom of the tubes 0. E is a deflector resting on the disk B, which controls the supply of air to the flame.
I have described the glass portion of my device as a cylinder, but I do' not confine myself to any particular form.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I 1. The combination of the glass cylinder 0, metallic top D, hooks e, springs (1, tubes 0, disk- B, and burner A, as shown and de scribed.
2. The combination of the deflector E, disk B, burner A,- the springs d, and supportingtubes 0, as shown and described.
