UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD J. BROOKS, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO E. J. BROOKS 85 OO., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,794, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed February 2, 1880.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. BnooKs, of Orange, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps and Lanterns,
of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to car-lamps and oillamps of other descriptions, and to portable lanterns for railway officers and others.
The primary object of the invention is to 1o support the bottoms of such lamps andlanterns independently of their globes and without obstructing the latter.
Another object of the said invention is to combine a reector with a central support for the oil-reservoir or bottom in a peculiar manner, so that the same shall possess superior efficiency and durability.
Another object of the said invention is to combine air-passages with a central reflector zo and a transparent protecting-tube, so as to keep the latter' cool and clear.
Another object of the said invention is to combine a central air-supply with an annular burner and a central reiector, so as to feed the flame and protect the surface of the reector at one and the same time.
The said invention consists in certain forms and combinations of parts whereby I have accomplished the said objects, and in an improved lamp or lantern in which. the same are embodied, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is an elevation of a portable lantern illustrating this invention. Fig. 2 is a halfsection of the same on the horizontal line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a half-section on the longitudinal line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of an oil-reservoir with a cluster of burners, illustrating a modiiication. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the latter on the line 5 5, Fig. 4. Fig. Gis 'a plan view of a cluster of rcfiectors adapted for use with the said oil-reservoir and cluster of burners in connection with a central support. Fig. 7 represents a back view of 011e of the said reiiectors, with a section of their supportin g-rin g.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
. I attach the swinging bail B or other supportor lifter of my improved lamp or lantern to a metallic top, T, made of sheet metal in any preferred style, and appropriatelyr perforated for the escape of heated air and consumed gases, said top terminating immediately below the upper edge of the globe G, which is, by preference, anged at its upper edge, and attached within a depending marginal flange of the said top by plaster-of-paris or equivalent means, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
The globe may be of any approved shape and relative size, and constitutes the outer 6o wall of the structure, no external frame-work being used. A iiat plate, P, which may be the Hoor or top of a base of any preferred design, closes against the lower edge of the globe, but need not, and by preference does not, project above said edge, the whole area of the globe below the top T being left free for illumination. Said bottom plate, P, is attached to or combined with the oil-reservoir R, which in the illustration is inclosed within the globe, but may, if preferred, depend from said plate.
I support the said reservoir and bottom plate by means of an axial tube, A, which may be soldered, brazed, or otherwise permanently attached either to the top or to the bottom, and attached to the other by any preferred form of fastenings. In the illustrations said tube is permanently attached to the top T, and is fast cned to said bottom plate, l?, by a pair of bayonet-joints, formed by angular slots s in the 8O lower end of the tube engaging with radial pins p, attached to the bottom of said plate.
The reservoir R has been made annular to adapt it to said support, and in the form illustrated by Sheet l of the drawings it has been provided with a concentric annular burner or wick-tube, b, provided with a suitable wick, and with attached chimney-holders 7L to support a draft-chimney, o. Said wick-tube may be triangular or square instead of round, if 9o preferred, with wicks adapted thereto. A tillingtube, f, at one side of the burner, provides for supplying the reservoir with oil.
To form an efficient and durable reiicctor within the annular Haine of the burner b, the tube A is electroplated externally with silver or nickel, and a clear-glass tube, r, is applied thereto to protect its surface or to form a glazed reflector-surface, said tube r being supported by clips h2, attached to the side of the 10| tube A, as shown in Fig. 3. Above the bttom of the reflector-tube r the tube A is perforated, as shown in Figz, to adlnit air to the interior of said tuber, said air serving to keep said rciiector-tube cool and clear, the latter by preventing any deposit of sweat 7 within the relatively cool glass.
Air is admitted to the flame through perforations in the bottom plate, P, the central tube to of the burner b, which extends down to said plate, being' made large enough to expose au annulus of sufficient area. (See Fig. 2.) The air admitted through the latter serves not only to feed the ilame, but to protect the surface of i5 the central reiiector, rendering itlessliable to become smoked.
kIn the modification illustrated by Sheet 2 of the drawings an annular oil-reservoir, R2, is made to fit tightly upon the lower end of :o the tube A, Figs. l to 3, in place of the reser- ,o a perforated marginal flange or bottom plate,
P2, closes against the lower edge of the globe, as in the iirst form.
Before applying the reservoir R2v to the tube A the latter is provided, in lieu of the re- 5 Hector-tube 1", with a ring, i", supporting a cluster of reiiectors, r2, which may be of any approved style, corresponding in number and relative position with the burners b2, and attached removably to said collar by hooks IL',
o as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
rlhe combination and relative arrangement of the tube A and reflectors r2 with the reservoir R2 and burners b2 is illustrated by dotted outlines of said parts A r2 in Figs. 4L and 5.
5 In addition to the major modiiication above described, I propose adapting the axial tube to be used as au oil-reservoir in some cases, on the principle of studentslamps, and in others as an escape-tube for carrying off the cono sumed gases. I also propose making the oilreservoir or bottom non-annular and attaching the axial tube to the top thereof.
The above description will enable those skilled in the art to make and use lamps and lanterns according to my invention.
Other immaterial modifications will suggest themselves, such as the silvering of the reiiector-tube r internally, in lieu of plating the tube A, the substitution of a solid rod for the latter in some cases, changes of forms and proportions, the employment of different fastenings, and the like.
l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, in a lamp or lantern, of a metallic top and a transparent globe depending from said top with a removable metallic bottom closing against the lower edge of A said globe and an axial support connecting said bottom and top, substantially as herein specified.
2. The combination, in a lamp or lantern, of a metallic top and a transparent globe depend ing from said top with a removable metallic bottom closing against the lower edge of said globe, an axial support connecting said bottom and top, and a concentric reflector formed around the said axial support, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination,in alamp or lantern, of a bright-plated axial tube, forming a reflector, a transparent protecting-tube applied thereto, and perforations admitting air within said transparent tube at or near its lower end, as herein specified.
4. The combination of the perforated bottom plate, l), the annular burner b, the axial tube A, and the concentric reflector-tube r, as herein described.
5. The combination of the top T, globe G and perforated bottom plate, P, the annular oil-reservoir R, with its concentric burner b and chimney c, and the axial tube A, with its reliector-tube r, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
EDWARD J. BnooKs.
