Description

(No Model.)
- F. G. JOHNSON.
NECK YOKE;
Patented Aug. 7, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE, I
FRANK O. JOHNSON, OFKISHWVAUKEE, ILLINOIS.
NECK-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 282,529, dated August 7,, 1883.
Application filed December 21, 1882. g (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK G. J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kishwaukee, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Neck-Yoke Center, of which the following is pole; and it consists'in a leather clasp produced, mainly, from a single strap, the ends of which are joined to each other by means of rivets, and it is foldedin such a manner as to 'produce end loops to receive the neck-yoke bar, and a single central loop depending from the bar to receive the socket on the end of the pole of the vehicle.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an isometrical representation of my improved neck-yoke center in place on the central portion of the neck-yoke bar, and Fig. 2 is an under face view thereof.
In the figures, A represents the central portionof the wood bar of the neck-yoke, preferably produced from a suitable piece of Wood by turning in a lathe, having its central portion provided with annular beads or rings a, projecting from its periphery. The center clasp of my improved neck-yoke is produced in this instance mainly from a single strap of leather, represented at B, having itsends at c suitably scarfed. This strap is then folded in such a manner that its scarfed ends 0 shall overlap each other, preferably on the center portion of the strap, in which position. the parts, or the scarfed ends thereof, are securely fixed to each other by means of rivets cl, passed through the parts at proper intervals and se curely riveted, producing looped ends. This strap is then centrally folded, preferably at the point of ,its overlappings, in such a manner as to form a loop, O, to receive the end of the pole, or the socket thereon, and to bring lining, h, placed on their under face, and a transverse strap, 2', placed on their outer face,
both of which are securely fixed to the looped straps by means of rivets is, passed through the parts and securelyriveted.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I produce at a small cost a reliable neck-yoke center capable of use in connection with pleasore-carriages, and perhaps with all varieties of light Vehicles requiring a neck-yoke.
In the foregoing I have represented my improved neck-yoke center as mainly constructed from a single strap of leather, or a strap of leather in one piece, which is very desirable;
but it may be constructed from several pieces when such pieces are suitably joined, producing a single piece of sufficient length, and still be within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. A neck-yoke center produced from a leather strap by joining its ends and folding, substantially in the manner herein described,
producing a loop to receive the pole-socket and loops in the same line to receive the neckyoke bar, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination, with the herein-described neck-yoke center produced from a leather strap having its ends joined and folded in the manner shown and described, of an under face-lining and an outside tranverse strap connecting the main strap of the neck-yoke center, said lining and transverse strap fixed to the main strap by riveting or otherwise,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth. a I
FRANK o. JOHNSON.
