Description

Feb; 18, 1958' J. G. GEHM CLOTHES HANGER Filed June 15, 1956 i 1 IH John Ge/rm IN V EN TOR. BY ym, 15%
CLOTHES HANGER John G. Gehm, Kirltsville, Mo. Application Jtme 15, 1956, senarNo. 591,650
3 Claims. (Cl. 223-91) This invention relates to clothes hangers and more particularly to a clothes hanger adapted to support any garment with a belt, tie or any accessory which would be hung separate from the garment.
An object of the present invention is to provide an eflicient, economical and business-like device for caring for belts, ties and accessories in assembling and completing cleaning orders in a dry cleaning plant, retail outlet or the like. One of the principal problems that is solved by the invention is that of losing belts, ties and accessories which are generally pinned or clamped to the horizontal section of an ordinary clothes hanger.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide an ordinary clothes hanger with means preferably confined within the sides of a coat hanger which may readily accommodate and hold onto belts, ties and other accessories without resorting to other clamps or pins whereby the customers garments on the coat hanger is retained with the accessories that are companion to it. The placement of the belt holder has significance. It is placed at the top part of the hanger where it will not interfere with garments being placed on the shoulder pieces. It safely clears the shoulder pieces of the hanger and does not interfere with grasping the hanger or carrying it from place to place.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the invention applied to an ordinary coat hanger; and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of another form of the coat hanger which constitutes an embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing there is a coat hanger that is equipped with clamp 12 that constitutes one form of the invention. Coat hanger 10 consists of two sloping side rails 14 and 16, together with a bottom connecting rail 18 secured to the outer ends thereof. In the construction of the coat hanger it is formed with a hook 20 from which shank 22 proceeds in order to form an extremity of the side rail 14.
Clamp 12 is formed as a continuation of the shank wire 24 which protrudes upwardly from side rail 16. In coiling shank wire 24 around itself and shank wire 22, it is extended downwardly to form shank 26, the latter terminating in a laterally extended arm 28 which is smoothly curved to its end. At this end 30 it is returned below arm 26 in order to form a longer arm 32, only to terminate in a bight 34 from which arm 36 proceeds. The extremity of arm 36 has a bight 38 at its extremity from which the final arm 40 commences. These arms are nested in each other, each being smoothly curved from end to end in order to form a spring like clamp 12 between the arms of which the objects mentioned previously,
United statfis Patent 0 2,823,841 Ce Patented Feb. 18, 1958 as belts, ties, bows, and other accessories may be fitted. If desired an advertisement tag or equivalent may be attached to the clamp. Itis. noticed that the entire hanger periphery is. of standard form, being unaltered by the presenceofclamplZ. Accordingly, the use of the hanger isnot. impeded in any way.
Attention. is now invited to Figure 2 where there is a coat hanger 50 exemplifying another of the numerous possible embodimentsof the invention. This hanger has a bottom rail: 52 together with a pair of side rails 54 and 56 which are tapered inwardly toward shank 60 whose upper end is formed with a hook 62. This is an absolutely conventional coat hanger on which clamp 64 is applied, the latter being detachable and attachable so that ordinary, commercially available coat hangers may be the subject of the invention described herein.
Clamp 64 is made of wire construction, as is clamp 12 and has a shank 66 with a loop 68 formed at its upper extremity. This loop is placed over hook 62 and shank 60 and rests upon the lands 70 and 72 formed at the inner extremities of side rails 50 and 56. The lower end of the shank 66 is provided with arms 73, 74, 75 and 76 that are fashioned in a manner identical to the corresponding arms of Figure 1. They function in an identical way. Like the embodiment of Figure 1, an advertising main panel, plate, tag 78 or the like is applicable to the clamp by being fitted on one of the arms of the clamp, by being soldered, or by being applied in any other manner such as the use of an adhesive material. The dimensioning and shape of the loop is such that it fits snugly on the hanger, so that it will stay in place on the shank and will not swing out of place.
Although only one type of conventional coat hanger is illustrated it is understood that the invention may be practiced on all types of ordinary or unusual coat hangers with equal facility. Where the expression wire is used, it is intended to be construed as such and not limited to metal wire. Plastic or other material may be used.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. In a wire hanger that has side rails and a bottom rail connected thereto together with a shank protruding from said side rails and a hook thereon, said shank, hook, side rails and bottom rail being in approximately a single plane, the improvement comprising a clamp for attachment of articles onto the coat hanger, said clamp being of wire construction and contained approximately in the same plane as the coat hanger, said clamp having a shank, a smoothly curved arm protruding from one end thereof, a second smoothly curved arm parallel to the first mentioned smoothly curved arm and connected at one end thereof to the first mentioned smoothly curved arm, additional smoothly curved arms similarly connected to the second mentioned smoothly curved arm in order to form a group of arms between the: arms of which articles are adapted to be clamped, said shank being sufficiently short to support said clamp Wholly above the bottom rail and within the space enclosed by the rails of said hanger, and means at the opposite end of said shank for attaching said shank to the coat hanger.
2. The construction of claim 1 wherein said means comprises an extension of the wire which forms the shank of the coat hanger and which wraps upon itself to hold the coat hanger assembled.
3. For use on a coat hanger that has sides together with a shank protruding from said sides and a hook thereon, said shank, hook and sides being in approximately a single plane, an attachment adapted to be placed at the top part of the hanger where it will not interfere with a garment on the hanger, said attachment comprising a clamp for attachment of articles onto the coat hanger, said clamp being of wire construction. and adapted to be contained approximately in the same plane as the coat hanger, said clamp having a shank, a smoothly curved arm protruding from one end thereof, a second 2,828,841 a f g a T mentioned smoothly curved arm in order to form a flat group of arms between the arms of which articles are adapted to be clamped, said shank being sufficiently short to support said clamp wholly above the bottom rail and within the space enclosed by all of said rails of the hanger, and means at the opposite end of said shank for attaching said shank to the coat hanger, and including a loop that is adapted to fit over the hook and shank of the coat hanger.
