UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. l
J UDSON L. THOMSON, OF SYRAOSE, NEW YORK.
M ETALLIC BOOT-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,240, dated July 31, 18,83.
`Appuml'fion filed December 29,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, .IUDsoN L. TrroMsoN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Boot-Straps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in the combination, with a metallic loop, of a plate connected therewith and made concave on the side facing the boot-leg to which it is to be attached, a washer made concave on the side facing the plate, and rivets or clinchers for uniting said plate and washer, said attaching devices of the loop affording a secure hold on the bootleg and dispensing with the extra cloth staypieces hitherto used for attaching metallic loops to rubberbootlegs, and also effecting, a great saving of time and labor heretofore required for cementing the aforesaid stays b`e tween the outside Arubber and inside lining of the boot-leg, or for sewing the, metallic loop 4on the leather boots.
The `invention also consists in certain peculiarities in the detail construction of the aforesaid device, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth inthe claim. 2
In the annexed drawings, Figures l, 2, and
` 3 are face views of my improved metallic bootboot-strap into which to insert the finger in drawing the boot onto the foot, said loop being composed of metal and connected to a metal plate, B, by which it is attached'to the boot-leg with the aid of the following instrumentalities. The plate B is provided with suitable apertures, a a, for the reception or clinching pins or rivets 1", which project from a washer, b, to be applied to the `inner side of the bootleg, said pins or rivets passing through the boot-leg and through the apertures a of the plate B, and being clinched or upset on the exterior of the latter, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings. `In order to strengthen the aforesaid attaching device, I make the attaching-plate B and washer b concavo-convex, and place them with their concave sides facing each other, as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
If desired, the washer b may be provided with apertures coinciding with the apertures a of the plate B, and separate rivets or eyelets may be used for securing said parts to the boot-leg.
For cheap boots the loop A and its attaching-plate B may be formed in one piece, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. finer styles of boots I prefer to connect the loop A adjustably to the plate B by providing the upper portion of the said plate with a horizontal sleeve or roll, o", andforming the loop A of wire bent into proper shape, and in such a manner as to elastically press the two extremities of said wire toward each other, said extremities being bent to enter the roll r from oppositel ends. and are held therein by the aforesaid elastic pressure, the loop A being thus hinged on its attaching-plategB. The ends of the rollo", I provide each with two notches, u n, respectively, on the upper and lower portion of the roll, the two arms of the loop A, adjacent to the hinged ends thereof, being elastically held in the aforesaid notches n n, and serve to hold the loop yieldingly either in an upward-projecting position, as shown in` Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, and as required in the operation of drawing on the boot, or in a pendent or downward-projecting position, as shownin Fig. 4 of the drawings, the latter position obviating the danger plate B, connected with said loop and made concave on the side facing the bootleg to which it is to be attached, and provided with For thel apertures a, the washer b, formed concave on the side facing plate B, and rivets or clinchers for uniting said plate B and washer b, substantially as'described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York,
this 27th day of December, 1882.
