Description

(NoModel.) Y. Y
Y J. L. THOMSON. I TOE PIECE FOR RUBBER SHOES.
N. FUER; mmuihqnphur. wmlngmn. D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JUDSON L. THOMSON, OF SYRAOUSE, NEW YORK.
Toe-Piece Foa RUBBER sHoEs.'
SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,601, dated February 20, 18.83. Application filed July 7, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, J UDsoN L. THOMSON, of Syracuse, 1n the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toe-Pieces for Rubber Shoes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has reference to that class of toe-pieces which are formed of sheet metal, and are applied to the heel or counter of rubber shoes for affording ahold for the toe of one foot in removing' the rubber shoe from the other foot.
The invention consists in au improved manner of forming` the projecting, toe-pieceon the plate by which it is attached to the shoe, whereby said toe-piece is more thoroughly braced to resist the upward as well as the downward strain, all as hereinafter more fully explained, and speciiically set forth in the claim.
Referring' to the annexed drawings, Figures l and 2 are rear views of the heel or counter of a rubber shoe provided with my improved toe-piece, illustrating modifications thereof; and Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 4
a represents a metal plate, which has a lateral distention in wllich are two vertical slots, through which pass the clinches projecting from a washer applied to the inner side ofthe shoe, and serving to secure said plate a in its required position, substantially in the same manner as more fully described in my Letters Patent of June 20, 1882.
c denotes the toe-piece proper, which in this case l form of an extension of the plate a, bent outward therefrom and then back to said plate, the returned portion terminating with a tongue or clinching-spur, d, -which passes through a slot, b, iu the plate a, and is upset upon the opposite side thereof'. Said returned portieri is thus iirmly secured to the supporting-plate n, and serres as a brace and tie, which prevents the toe-piece from being` crowded either upward or downward.
Vhat I claim is- In a toepiece for rubber shoes, the plate a, provided with the slot b and the projection c, formed of an extension of said plate, and terminating with the clinch d, passed through the slot b and upset onto the plate a, substantially as described and shown, l'or the purpose set torth.
In testimony whereot'I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence ot two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York this 28th (lay of June, 1882.
' JUDSON L. THOMSON.
