Description

YARN TWISTER Philippe Boillat and Reinhard Rohrer, Biel, Switzerland,
assignors to Miniatur Kugellager A. G., Biel, Switzerland, a corporation of Switzerland Application February 2, 1954, Serial No. 407,724
Claims priority, application Switzerland February 12, 1953 7 Claims. (Cl. 5777.33)
This invention relates to a yarn twister and more especially to such a device capable of operating at high rotative speeds while the yarn is passing therethrough at relatively high linear speeds.
Twister operations at high rotative speeds of the order of 100,000 R. P. M. or higher are particularly useful in false twisting yarn traveling at relatively high linear speeds to produce a high degree of twist such as is useful in yarn treating processes. Under such conditions there are presented operational problems of undue wear of the twister and breakage of the yarn.
In general, twisters are provided with a longitudinally extending guide or means to guide yarn fed longitudinally and with means to trap or entrain yarn at a portion of its guide axis path so as to move it angularly about its feed axis and thereby cause it to twist. Heretofore, numerous forms of twisters have been proposed, each presenting one or more of the following difiiculties which it is the purpose of this invention to overcome:
(l) Relatively high cost of manufacture;
(2) Subject to undue wear and breakage of yarn traveling at relatively high speeds;
(3) Requiring interchange of parts in order to vary the twist torque; and
(4) Difficult to thread.
It is an object of this invention to provide a twister of simple construction, economical to manufacture and durable in operation.
Another object is to provide a twister adapted to greatly facilitate threading and reduce yarn wear and breakage.
A further object is to provide a twister which may be readily adjusted to provide varying degrees of twist torque without the interchange of parts.
Further and other objects, features and advantages of the invention will more clearly appear from the detailed description given below, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings illustrating, by way of example, presently preferred embodiments of the invention, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section taken through the axis of the twister, with certain parts broken away which are not necessary to an understanding of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the device shown in Fig. 1 with the parts in a different position of adjustment, as will be more fully explained hereinafter;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken at 33 of Fig. 2 with certain parts eliminated and showing further details of the device of Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the parts in a different postiion of adjustment;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modified form of the invention;
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view taken at 66 of Fig. 5 with certain parts omitted, and showing the device in one position of adjustment; and
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing the parts in another position of adjustment.
aren't 2,321,062 Patented Jan. 28, 1958 ice In general, the invention comprises a twister body having a longitudinal bore providing a guide axis coinciding with the linear feed of the yarn through the twister, and an adjustable member disposed in the bore or throat of the twister body so constructed and arranged that in one position of adjustment the yarn may be threaded through the twister along its feed axis and in another position the yarn will be deflected from its feed axis and entrained by said member so that as the twister head rotates the entrained portion of the yarn will be given angular motion about the feed axis to thereby twist the yarn while it is being fed through said twister. The adjustability of the portion disposed within the bore of the twister also permits variations of the degree of de fiection and hence variation in the twisting torque.
Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the twister body comprises a shaft 1 which in the present embodiment has secured thereto a sleeve 2 forming a part thereof to provide an increased wall thickness for the purposes to be made apparent hereinafter. The body 1 is provided with an axial bore extending in the direction of the feed axis which is designated I-lI and is preferably provided with a sleeve 3 held therein by a press fit and provided with a bore centered on the axis III; and with a sleeve 4 spaced axially from the sleeve 3 and adjustably disposed therein by screw threads and having a bore corresponding to that of sleeve 3 and in axial alignment therewith. The sleeves 3 and 4 are preferably made of hardened steel and the bores of sleeves 3 and 4 are chamfered or rounded at their ends to prevent wear of the yarn passing therethrough. The shaft 5 extends transverse to the body 1 in a direction perpendicular to a plane passing through the axis III and the axis of the shaft 5 preferably intersects the axis I-II. The opposite ends of the shaft 5 are journaled in the body wall comprising shaft 1 and sleeve 2 with a relatively tight fit so that the shaft may be angularly adjustable about its axis. The shaft 5 is provided on its opposite ends with slots serving as a means of engagement from the exterior for adjusting its angular position. The shaft 5 in the region passing through the axial bore of the body 1 is reduced in diameter as at 5 to provide an annular recess for receiving the cylindrical end 4' of the threaded sleeve 4 for purposes of securing the shaft to the body 1 so as to prevent its dislodgment under centrifugal force due to the high rotational speeds of the body 1 which is supplied with suitable means to effect such rotation. The sleeve 4 is secured in adjusted position by means of a lock nut 6. The reduced diameter 5' of shaft 5 is provided with a smooth hole 7 whose axis lies in a plane passing through the feed axis I-II and extends perpendicular to the axis of shaft 5. The hole 7 is chamfered or smoothly rounded at its opposite ends to prevent wear of the yarn. This hole provides a guideway for the yarn fed along the axis III. The yarn is designated YY in Figs. 3, 4, 6
and 7.
In the position of adjustment shown in Fig. 3 the hole 7 is in axial alignment with the axis III so as to facilitate the passage of yarn therethrough in the threading operation, after which the shaft 1 may be angularly adjusted, such as to the position shown in Fig. 4. The portion of the shaft 5 surrounding or defining the guideway 7 provides a deflecting portion for deflecting the yarn from the guide axis to thereby entrain the same and produce twist. This adjustability of the shaft 5, which serves as a twister member, permits the variation of the degree of offset or decentering of the yarn from the feed axis IH to thereby vary the twisting torque. Indicia marks such as 8, 9 and 10 (Fig. 2) are conveniently employed to facilitate proper register of the twister member in the desired position,
Modification,
A modification of the device is shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 in which the structure is identical with that above described withthe exceptions to be hereinafter'noted,
a hole 7 as in Fig. 1, the guideway is provided in the.
following manner: The reduced diameter Sa of,the
shaft a is provided with a recess 17 milled or cut there-- in in a direction perpendicular to the axis of shaft 54 and coincident with a plane passing through the feed guide axis which in this embodiment is designated II I-'-IV. The recess 17 extends through more than half the diameter of said reduced portion (Figs. 6 and ,7 so that in the position of adjustment shown'in Fig. 6 the yarn may be freely threaded through the recess in a straight line without interference from the twister 1116111. ber 'S'a. The remaining portion of the reduced diameter Sa serves as the deflecting portion and preferably is provided with a smooth groove 17 formed in its periphery asa continuation of said recess 17 and smoothly rounded off Where its ends meet the bottom of the recess 17. It will therefore be seen that after the yarn has been threaded the twister memberSq may be adjusted from the position shown in Fig. 6 to a decentering position, such asthe' position shown in Fig; 7 at which time the yarn'will pass through the guideway provided by the groovei'T'.
' Having thus described our invention with particularity with reference to presently preferred embodiments thereof it will be'obvious to those skilled in the art, after understanding our invention, that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, and .we aim in the appended claims to cover such changes and modifications'asfall within the scope of the invention.
