United States Patent APPLICATOR-DISPENSER Jacob W. Waddell, Waverly, Ohio Application September 2, 1953, Serial No. 378,106 1 Claim. (Cl. 15104) This invention relates to a novel device for dispensing a limited quantity of body deodorant and applying it under the arms or wherever desired.

The principal object of the invention is to provide an attractive and effective article which may be easily and conveniently used for the stated purpose.

Another object of the invention is to provide an applicator having a head which may be screwed onto either a container or a handle, said head having a recess to receive a limited quantity of deodorant from the container and serving to apply the deodorant when rubbed on the skin by means of the handle.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive article which may be expeditiously manufactured at such small cost that it may well be given free of charge with each sale of deodorant.

With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing, and claimed.

Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the head applied to a deodorant container to receive a quantity of deodorant therefrom;

Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the head applied to the operating handle; and

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the head.

The preferred construction is shown in the drawing and will be rather specifically described, but it is to be understood that minor variations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. Also, while it is preferred to use a modern transparent plastic in the manufacture of the article, any other appropriate material could well be employed.

A substantially oblate spheroidal head 5 is provided, said head having a socket 6 which opens through one of its sides, and an opening 7 from said socket to its opposite side. The side wall of the socket 6 has a screw thread 8 adapting the head 5 for threading onto the neck of a bottle or the like 9, whereby the opening 7 may be filled with deodorant from said bottle or the like. Around this opening 7 and spaced therefrom, the head has smoothly rounded concentric ribs 10 which aid in spreading the deodorant when said head has discharged the material on the user's skin. This provides a smooth area for application of the deodorant on tender skin, but provides ribs which by a slight tilting of the handle may be used for spreading action.

To facilitate movement of the head 5 over the skin, a handle 11 is provided, said handle being of a length and diameter to be conveniently held between the thumb and fingers of the hand. This handle 11 has a threaded terminal 12 onto which the head 5 may be conveniently screwed upon removal of said head from the bottle or the like 9. This threaded terminal 12 preferably has a cavity 13 to communicate with the opening 7 of the head 5 for the purpose of receiving any surplus deodorant which may depend from the filled opening when threading the head 5 onto the handle 11.

When the head 5 with its opening 7 charged with deodorant, is rubbed upon the users skin by means of the handle 11, the body warmth causes the deodorant to spread in a film over the applicator surface of the head so that eifective deodorant application can be easily effected. The ribs 10 aid in this application of the deodorant as they catch some of the latter and prevent it from running too far around the surface of the head.

The bottle or other containers of deodorant may be marketed with the heads 5 already attached thereto and a handle 11 may be-supplied with each bottle or the like, or the containers may be otherwise closed and an assembly of head and handle furnished with each, or it may be left to the retailer to present the assemblies of heads and handles to customers as he may desire.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a novel article has been provided for attaining the desired ends, but attention is again invited to the possibility of making minor variations.

I claim:

An article of the class described comprising an applicator head of generally oblate spheroidal form throughout and having a socket in one flattened side and an opening from said socket to its opposite side, the surface of the head having a smooth circular area immediately surrounding said opening and a concentric area outwardly of said circular area and extending downwardly along the sides of said head which is provided with smooth, rounded annular ribs, the side wall of said socket having a screwthread adapting said head for application to a container of deodorant, whereby said opening may be filled with the deodorant, and an operating handle for said head, said handle having a threaded terminal receivable in said socket, and a seat portion engaged by the adjacent side of the head and said threaded terminal of said handle having a cavity centering on the head opening to receive surplus deodorant when screwing said head onto said handle.
