Description

Dec. 31, 1957 c. E. PETERSEN BUCKLE Filed Feb. 3, 1956 INVENTOR. i 1015' new no/J ATTORNEY United States Patent BUCKLE Carl E. Petersen, Upper Montclair, N. 1., assignor to Eastern Tool & Mfg. Co., Belleville, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application February 3, 1956, Serial No. 563,314
' 3 Claims. 01. 24-73 This invention relates to improvements in buckles, such as are used for fastening one portion of a garment to another and is especially directed to a new construction of such devices which, in one form thereof, is adapted to connect a pair of buttons secured to a pair of overalls, to the strap portion thereof. The invention provides a novel device, which may be formed of wire for this purpose, and which is formed, at one end thereof, with a loop to receive the free end of the strap or to have the free end of the strap sewed or otherwise connected thereto; the buckle may be wound around the strap to foreshorten the latter.
A further form of the invention incorporates the novel features above mentioned, for use in connection of a single button to the strap of the overalls.
These and other advantageous objects, which will appear from the drawings and from the description hereinafter, are accomplished by the structure of my invention, of which an embodiment is illustrated in the drawings. It will be apparent, from a consideration of said drawings and the following description, that the invention may be embodied in other forms suggested thereby, and such other forms as come within the scope of the appended claims are to be considered within the scope and purview of the instant invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an exploded perspective view of one form of the invention wherein the buckle comprises a length of wire formed of two halves, shown prior to their being secured together in assembled relation,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a buckle formed pursuant to the invention showing, sectionally and dotted, spaced garment buttons to be secured by the buckle to the strap,
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of a buckle, showing the same connected to the free end of the strap and wound around the strap for several convolutions to foreshorten the strap to the desired length, and
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view showing the manner in which the free end of the strap portion of the garment may be sewed or otherwise secured to the elongated loop portion at the top of the buckle.
As shown in the drawings, the device of this invention comprises a buckle which is preferably made of wire either in a single continuous length or formed of halves, each bent to define a J-shaped portion 11, 12, such halves being connected at their free ends 13, 14 in any desired or convenient manner to form, when assembled, a complete elongated loop portion 15 at the top of the buckle, defining the width of the buckle. The free ends of the wire at the ends of the loop 15, are bent angularly and downwardly as at 16, 17, so as to define pendant sides 18, 19 of the buckle, and said sides may be either angularly, outwardly directed relative to the longitudinal axis 20 of the loop 15 as shown in Fig. 2, or they may be directed straight down at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis 20. The side lengths 18, 19 of the buckle terminate in inwardly bent portions 21, 22 to define closed spaced loops 23, 24 at the lower end of the buckle. Each of said lower loops is formed by bending the wire member inwardly as shown at 21, 22 and then downwardly arcuately inwardly as at 25, 26, then inwardly as at 27, 28, then upwardly as at 29, 30, then outwardly as at 31, 32 to the side wire lengths 18, 19 to close the lower loop.
The elongated loop portion 15 at the top of the buckle is adapted to receive the strap S to connect it with the buckle either by passing the free end 33 of the strap through the loop as in Fig. 3, or by stitching said free end as at 34 in Fig. 4, and the buckle may be wound around the strap so as to define convolutions such as 35, 36 to foreshorten the strap to the desired length. The loop portions 25, 26 are adapted to receive the spaced buttons of the garment to which the strap S is to be connected, the shanks of the buttons being shown as at 37, 38 in Fig. 2, and the head portions in dotted lines at 39, 40. Member 10, as above noted, is directed outwardly at 31, 32 to the sides 18, 19 thereof to close the lower loops 23, 24, and may be bent around said sides as noted at 50, 51.
The buckle of this invention may be formed of a single length of wire or sections of wire (Fig. 1) bent as shown in Fig. 2 so as to define the complete buckle, the free ends thereof being suitably connected as shown in 41 in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An overall buckle for connection of spaced garment buttons to a strap, comprising a substantially straight length of wire section bent upon itself at the ends of the straight section to define ends and extended from each end portion toward the other end portion so as to define parallel, straight lengths of wire, spaced from the first mentioned straight section of wire, thereby defining an elongated loop portion of the width of the buckle at the top thereof, the free ends of the wire at: the ends of said loop being bent angularly and downwardly so as to define pendant side Wire lengths of the buckle, and terminating-in inwardly bent portions to define closed spaced loops at the lower end of the buckle, each of said closed, spaced lower loops being formed by bending the wire member inwardly, then downwardly, then arcuately inwardly, then upwardly and then outwardly to the side wire length and bent around said side wire lengths to form encircling ring portions around said side wire lengths, thus closing the lower loop, the elongated loop portion at the top of the buckle being adapted to receive the strap to connect it with the buckle and adapted to be wound around the strap to foreshorten the latter to the desired length, the arcuate portions of the lower loops being adapted to receive said buttons to connect the garment to the strap.
2. In an overall buckle as set forth in claim 1, said length of wire being formed of two halves, each bent to define a J shaped portion of the elongated loop, said portions being connected at the shorter length of the J.
3. In an overall buckle as set forth in claim 1, said wire member being angularly downwardly and outwardly bent relative to the longitudinal axis of the loop portion of the buckle.
