UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. \VINTERBOTTOM, OF PHILADELPHIA, AND J OHN MURRAY, OF
CONSHOHOOKEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
B ED STEA D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,704, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed August 19, 1882.
ment in Bedsteads, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of the bedstead embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof partly broken away.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Our invention consists of means for tighten ing the head andfoot boards of a bedstead against the side rails thereof and sustaining the ends of said rails, substantially as herein after fully set forth and definitely claimed.
It also consists of peculiarlyconstructed brackets for sustainingand confining the side rails.
Referring to the drawings, A B 0 represent the head-board, foot-board, and side rails, respectively, of a bedstead.
D represents brackets, which are secured to the posts of the bedstead and support the side rails, it being seen that the brackets on the posts of the head-board face those on the posts of the foot-board. Each bracket consists of an angular plate, the vertical limb a of which is secured to the post, and the horizontal limb b sustains the end of the side rail, and has an upright pin or stud, E, which enters an opening in the under side of said rail.
Rising from the outside of the horizontal 'limb bis a guard, c, which is secured to the post, to which the connected vertical limb .a is attached and overlaps the adjacent end of the side rail. The vertical limb has a pin or stud, d, which projects horizontally therefrom and enters an opening in the leg or post for firmly sustaining the bracket on said leg or post.
It will be seen that the side rails are sus tained on the brackets and connected with the head and foot boards or'posts by means of the studs E, thus preventing disconnection of the parts, and the guards c prevent lateral dis placement of theside rails, it being noticed that there are no places for lodg nent of ver- (No'modeL) min, as the legs or posts are not pierced, excepting where they receive the screws of the brackets; and the openings in the side rails for the studs E are closed by the horizontal limbs of the brackets on which the side rails are sustained.
F F represent bolts, which are right and left threaded and passed through the crossrails of the head and foot boards, and have their heads abut against the outer faces of the same, the inner ends of the bolts pointing toward each other and having fitted to them a swivel-piece, G.
It will be seen that when the swivel-piece G is properly rotated the bolts are drawn toward each other, thus forcing the head-board and foot-board, or posts thereof, against the side rails and tightening the entire bedstead, the operation being powerful and reliable and the means employed simple, convenient, and inexpensive, the joints between the side rails and head and foot boards or posts being entirely closed, so that vermin cannot enter there in, and there are no loose or rattling parts.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. The bracket for a bedstead, consisting of an angular plate each limb of which is provided with a stud, substantially as and for the purposes-set forth.
2. The bracket for a bedstead, having side guard, c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Thebracket forabedstead, consisting of a piece, a I), having an upright stud, E, and side guard, c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The head-board, foot-board, and side rails, and the longitudinally-extending screwbolts, in combination with brackets which are secured to the head and foot boards and formed with horizontal limbs b and side guards, c, the ends of the side rails being freely fitted to said brackets, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
W. S. WVINTERBOTTOM. JOHN MURRAY.
