UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD LENSING, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
TREE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,637, dated July 3, 1883,
Application filed November 9, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern and outwardly-curved legs, by which it is se cured in the ground, substantially as shown and described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to avail themselves of the benefits of my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and use, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my device; Fig. 2, a cross-section of part of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views of a modification. I
A represents a tree-box cast or formed of metal in any desired shape or configuration. This box is formed in two pieces, having small lugs-or projections a a upon their inside edges, which interlock or overlap each other when-the two parts'are placed together, as seen by Fig. 1. These lugs are each provided with a small hole, a, through which passes a rod, 1), which is passed down from above through all of the lugs a a, which register with each other, and is screw-threaded upon its lower end, and the lowest pair of lugs aahave their holes a a threaded for the reception of this rod, which securely holds the parts of the box together. The lower end of the box is provided with a number of anchor-legs, B, which securely hold the parts of the box together. The lower end of the box is provided with a number of anchor-legs, B, which curve downward and outward, and when placed in the ground they secure the box firmly in an upright position.
Figs. 3 and 4 represent a modification of the box above described, which is provided with hook-shaped lugs c c, which interlock and obviate the necessity for the rod 1). The inside edges of the top of the box may be provided with a rubber ring or band, which will prevent the box from coming in contact with the tree.
This-box can be very cheaply cast of metal in.
fancy form, is easily and rapidly put together, and when in place is anchored firmly in position by its curved legs, and does not require to be secured to the tree.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tree-box formed in two parts having lugs a a, provided with holes a a, the lowest of which are screw-threaded, and legs B B, curved downward and outward, in combination with the locking-rod b, screw-threaded upon its lower end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNARD LENSING.
