3 Claims. (Cl. 41-14) My invention relates to devices known as sachets or perfume pads but instead of being. put among garments they are formed to be applied to undergarments to vaporize perfume or cologne to a pleasing and lasting aroma emanating from the body of a person applying the perfume.

Prior to my invention, earlier forms of sachets were scent bags' packed with perfumed powder such as l'tvender, or might take the form of dried fiowers or rose petals. Perfume, in the past, has been applied to the pulse parts of the human body such as the wrist, or in back of the ears or in the arm creases; and it has also been common practice to apply perfume on an undergarment but, when done in this manner, stains are left which are hard to remove by laundering. Also, when applied to portions of the body, the perfume is rapidly vaporize so that the scent or aroma lasts but for a short time.

This invention has among its objects, the production of a new, novel, and simple form of sachet or perfume pad in which the sachet may be applied to an undergarment by suitably fastening it at the top of the slip or brassiere or any other place the wearer desires to prevent the usual damage to undergarments by perfume spots.

A further object of the invention is to provide a perfume pad o1- sachet which may be heavily saturated with a 'suitable perfume or cologne, and which is also ornamental and may be simply applied.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind' which is economical to manufacture and may be sold at a moderate price so that the wearer may have one or more for each undergarment without requiring the transfer of the sachet from one garment to another.

Still another object of the device is to fabrica'te the sachet as an ornamental bow in which the pad which encloses the absorbent material is hidden between the ornamental device and the garment to which the device is attached.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which may be a part of any under-garment or may be separately aflixed.

Still another object of the invention is to form the device from a single strip of ribbon and a small body of absorbent material to which is simple fasteningi device may be applied for detachably aflixing the device to an under-garment or which may be directly sewed to the under-garment.

In order to accomplish the objects of the invention, it is prefer-red to take a ribbon-like strip of material folded upon itself so that the dependent portions form the tabs of the simulated bow. One end of the folded portions of the ribbon-like stn'p is formed into a pillow in which is inserted a pad of absorbent material such as lambs wool. .A small Safety pin is afixed to one of the folds for securing the device to the under-garment. .An ornamental bow, flower, or other insignia may be added to additionally ornament the device, and the ribbon forming the sachet may be of any color corresponding to the Patentd Sept, 17, 195.7

2. garment to which it is attached' or may be in contrasting color for further ornamentation. The ornamental bow may also be formedfrom the same piece of ribbon as the sachet and tabs without being separately formed as a bow to be applied to the sachet.

f Many other objects and advantages of the sachet device herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure hereinv given.

To this end, my inventionV consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Fig. l is a perspective view illustratingthe folding of the material forming the device and the point at which the securing means is aflixed as well as the place at which the absorbent pad is formed;

Referring to Figs. l through 5, the sachet device 10 preferably comprises a dependent body portion 11 in the form of tabs 12, 13, and 14. A perfume receiving pad or pillow 15 is formed at the upper end of the device and a detachable fastening means 16, preferably in the form of a small safety pin, is aflixed at the fold between the dependent tabs 12 and 13. For further ornamentation, an ornamental insignia 17, in the form of a bow, may be applied to the upper end of the device so that the sachet device appears as a bow. Although for the purpose of disclosure of this invention the insignia is shown as a bow, one may also use an artificial miniature flower with strips of ribbon simulating the leaves, or the bow may be integrally formed from the same ribbon as the sachet. It is also within the scope of the invention that any other ornamental device may be used to enhance the appearance of the sachet device.

Referring to Figs. l through 4, in the fabrication of the sachet device, I prefer to use satin ribbon, preferably five-eighths of an inch wide and approximately seven inches long. Although the satin ribbon makes a richer appearing sachet, it is also within the scope of the device that other forms of ribbon such as Velvet, grosgrain, and taifeta may be used. The material from which the ribbon is made mayV be either Silk, rayon, nylon, and the like. Also, if one desires, the ribbon used may be wider and the tabs formed may be longer but it has been found that a sachet in which the overall length is approximately two inches provides a neat appearing device which does not detract from the garment to which the sachet is afllxed.

To form the depending tabs, it is preferred to cut one end on a bias 18 as illustrated in Figs. 1, 4, and 5. The opposite end may be cut on a bi'as though in order to form the perfume receiving pad, it is preferable that 'the opposite end 19 shall be cut squarely across.

The length of ribbon is preferably folded into three parts, substantially two inches long to form the t- abs 12, 13, and 14 with the remaini'ng end 20approxim ately one inch long to form the pillow 15. The completed perfume receiving pad or pillow 15 is approximately five-eightlis of an inchwide or the width of the ribbon, and the widthV of the pillow is approximately one-half inch measured lengthwise of the dependent tabs.

The pad 15 is preferably first formed by inserting a body of absorbent material 21 such as-lambs wool, which is first folded or bunched together to form a small p'ad approximately the size of the completed pillow. To assist in the assembly of the absorbent material, it may be preferable to wrap it in a piece of gauze before first applying, though this is not necessary.v The material is placed as illustrated in Fig. l and the free end 2h of the ribbon is divided approximately into halves with the absorbent material 21 inserted as shown, and it may be tacked in place by a single stitch 22 if necessary. However, it is within the scope of the invention that a skilled seamstress may place the 'absorbent material in place and fold to the position with the foldsras shown in 2. Then, holding the pad 1,5 in place, the edges of the upper portion 'of the tabl and the edges 23 and 24 are stitched together and drawn tightly so that the absorbent materia'l forming the filling forms the pillow-shaped perfume receiving pad. Although, for the purpose of illustration, the stitching 25 at each side of the pad is shown open, when actually stitched together, the edges 23 and 24 and the portion of the edge of the tab 14 contiguous to the edge 2-4' are firmly stitched together. This stitching may be in the form of overcasti'ng, chain stitching, or featherstitching and may be done by hand or machine. To shape the pillow, it may be necessary as the edges are stitched to force in the absorbent material so that in the completed pad none of the absorbent material is visible. When the pad is completed, the lower edge extends'to the line 26 as i'llustrated in Figs. l and 2. To make the pad, approximately one and one-half inches of material are used including the overlapped portion formed from the contiguous tab. To complete the sachet device, the remaining six inches of material are formed into thirds to form the tabs 12, 13, and 14. The folded edge 27 formed by the tabs 12 and 13 is brought up slightly above the upper edge 28 of the tab 14 to which the pad 15 is aflixed. This slight distance is such as to permit the assembly of the Safety pi=n 16 as illustrated in Figs. 1, 4, and so that the safety pin may be opened as iliustratcd in Fig. 5 for detachably aliixing the device to a garment. With the tabs 12, 13, and 14 folded as illustrated in Fig. 4 'and with the safety pin 16 assembled in place, the safety pin is then secured in its position by stitches 29. When assembied in this manner, the safety pin cannot be removed from the sachet because of the coiled end 30 and the head or guard 31. I

If it is desired, the sachet device may 'comprise simply the dependent tabs 12, 13, and 14, the perfume receiving pad 15, and the clasp or sm'all safety pin 16. It is preferred that the bottom end of the tab 12 and the fold line 32 shall be substazntiallly in alignment. Although it is prefeired to stitch the tabs together so that they substantially overlie, it is also within the scope of the invention that the stitching 29 could be so yapplied that the tab 12 and the folded over tabs 13 and 14 would slig'ntly diverge.

If it is dcsired to have the sachet device formed with an ornamental insiginia such las a bow or artificial fiower and the like, this may be applied as illustvated in Figs.Z

4 and 5. As illustrated, the bow 17 is preferably formed of satin ribbon substantially one-fourth of an inch wide and approximately seven and one-half inehes long with the ends cut on the bias 33. The bow is formed as illustrated and the loop for the bow is sewed in place with thread 34 as illustrated in Fig. 4 where the bow has been shown exploded from the sachet to better illustrate the sachet. The bow 17 may be sewed in place at the same time the stitching 29 is applied, if desired. The bow or ornamental insignia may be of such size and so appliedV to conceal the clasp 16.

In using the sachet device, the person's favorite perfume is applied to the pad either by applying the pad 15 to the open end of the perfume bottle or by using the stopper. Any amount may be applied as desired, depending upon the amount of aroma desired and the extent of time for which it is desired to have the aroma last. With this device, one can apply suicient perfume to iast throughout the day, and also overcome the need of applying perfume to the pulse parts of the body at frequent intervals, it being recommended with the ordinary application of perfume to the body that it be applied at the same time a persoifs lips are made up. When the device is pinned to a garment, the tabs permit the sachet to be rotated approximately 180,0 so that when the device is on the garment being worn, one can still easily apply the perfume to the pad, after which the sachet may be rotated downwardly so that the pad is hidden between the dependent tabs and the garment. It is also possible when the sachet comes With the original garment to apply the perfume in the same manner. The materials from which the sachet is formed permit the sachet to be laundered with the garment,

Aithough the sachet device is primarily designed for the application of perfume without damaging an undergarment with perfume stains, the device is equally adaptable for mounting the straps of a slip and a brassiere so that they are assembled within the space formed by the spring-biased pin leg 35 and guard leg 36 of the Safety pin to prevent the straps from slipping off the wearer's Shoulders.

It is also within the scope of the invention that the sachet device may be formed as a bow with an integrally formed perfume pad from the same piece of ribbon. Also, the sachet may be formed as a simple perfume pad with one or more dependent ornamental tabs. Other forms will readily be evolved by one skilled in the art in view of the above disclosure.

It is impossible to either describe or illustrate the many arrangements possible with the use of the sachet device as different persons will have different ideas, and the same lends itself to many variations. It is also possible to use other types of fabric for the formation of the ribbon from which the sachet is fabricated. It has been found that Satin-like ribbon is preferable. Although any form of absorbent material may be used to retain the perfume, lambis wool has been found to be preferable. Any colored ribbon or any ornamental insignia may also be used without departing from the scope of the invention. Athough it is preferred to use safety pins, colored .the same as the fabric, any other form of suitable clasp or securing means may be used.

Although the satchet device has been primarily disclosed for use with perfumes, it is equally adapted for use with deodorants of the liquid type. Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the eXact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.

What I clam as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A sachet comprising a strip of ribbon, a portion of said strip folded into substantially three dcpendent tabs and another portion shorter in length than each of the tabs folded upon itself to form an enclosure,A a body of absorbent material assembled within the enclosu're and the contiguous edges of the enclosure stitched ,together forming a pillow pad, securing means asscmbled at the upper end contiguous to the fold of the outer and center tabs with the outer and center tabs affixed eontguous to the upperend of the inner tab, whereby the pad when afiixed to agarment lies between the inner tab and the outer surface of the gannent.

A sachet comprising a strip of ribbon, aportion of said strip vfolded into substantially three dependent tabs and another -porton shorter in length than each of the tabs folded upon itself to form an enclosure, a body of absorbent material assembled within the enclosure and the contiguous edges of the enclosure sttched together formng a pillow pad, securing means assembled at the upper end contguous to the fold of the outer and center tabs with the outer and center tabs afixed contiguous to the upper end of the inner tab, Whereby the pad when aflixed to a garment lies between the inner tab and the body of the wearer, and an oranamental insignia afixed to the upper end of the outer tab contiguous to the securing means.

A sachet as set forth in claim 1, wherein the aforesaid securing means is formed as a clasp aflixed to the upper end of 'the sachet whereby the sachet is adapted to be hingedly mounted to a garment, and the lower portion of the satchet formed as a dependent tab, whereby the sachet may be pivoted about the clasp.
