UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARA A. SCHLEIEB, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
STOCKING-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,52, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed November 24,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARA A. ScHLEIER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stocking-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a means whereby stockings are prevented from becoming wet and soiled; and it consists of a protecting-casing which is applied to the leg at the top of the ankle, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters refer to like parts, Figure 1 rep resents a perspectiveview of the stocking-protector as applied to the leg. Fig. 2 is a plan view, showing it unfolded; and Fig. 3 is a detail showing its connection with the top of the boot.
Ain the drawings represents the "protector, which is made of leather or other suitable material, having the flaps B B in front and a tapering portion, C, at its rear, and so shaped to conform to the outline of the leg above the ankle. Any fine leather-such as morocco, &c.-and suitably decorated, may be employed;
As shown, the protector is fastened on the leg, either by a lacing, so as to draw the flaps B B together,'or by straps and buckles I) I), as shown in Fig. l. i
To prevent the protector A from slipping down over the boot, a hook, D, is applied at the inside of the tapering portion C, so as to hook over the top edge of the boot, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The protectorA is made of sufficient height to insure the protection of the stocking from moisture and soiling.
The protector will be found very useful for ladies wear in muddy weather, as it serves as a shield for the stockings against muddy and wet skirts, which, when raised, strike against the stockings.
This device differsfrom the ordinary leggin, in that it is designed to cover the leg merely a short distance above the boot, and does not project below the top of the boot, and has a supporting device to keep it above the top of the boot.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A stocking-protector formed of leather or other suitable material, having front flaps united by lacing or straps and buckles, and a supporting-hookat its rear to engage the top of the boot, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLARA A. SCHLEIER. Witnesses PAUL GoEPEL, SIDNEY MANN.
