JOHN POHLSEN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
LIGHT-EXTINGUISHER FOR LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,511, dated July 3, 1883,
' Application filed January 8, 1883. (No model.)
tion, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction and perfect the operation of light-extinguishers for lamps; and it consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which the several letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved device, the burner-cap being removed to show the construction beneath, and, further, showing the extinguishing semi-caps closed together over the wick. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the extinguishing semi-caps apart. Fig. 3 is a portional side elevation. Fig. 4. is a sectional view of an extinguishing semi-cap having arms by which the same is pivoted to a plate arranged over the wicktube, and Fig. 5 is aplan of said plate disconnected from the remainder of the burner.
In carrying out my invention I construct a burner in the ordinary way, a in the drawings being the bed of the burner; b, the cap arranged thereon, having the usual opening or slot, 0, therein, through which the flame passes, and (I being the wick-containing tube.
Over or around the wick-tube is placed the fulcrumal and pivotal plate e, having a slot, f, therein conforming in'shape to the wicktube, so that when said plate is placed upon said tube no riveting, soldering, or other means are required to hold the said plate in position. The extremities of the plate are provided with pivotal projections 9, adapted to receive the arms of the semi-caps.
Upon the plate e are arranged the semicaps h, having the arms Q3 projecting downward from each side of the cap and pivoted upon the projections 51. One of said arms on each semi-cap is extended downward from said pivotal point, forming a finger-piece, 0, by which the semi-cap is brought over the wick to extinguish the flame, in conjunction with the opposite semi-cap, all as will be understood. The lower edges of the semi-caps are approximately on a line with the top of the wick-tube, so that the said caps do not offer any obstruction to the air coming through the perforated base a.
To cause the semi-caps to separate automatically, I arrange a spring-wire, 12, around the wick-tube at a little distance therefrom, as shown, and secure the ends thereof by thrusting them through a perforation in one arm in each cap, so that the tendency of the spring will be to cause the arms to separate. The spring-wire, passing under the plate 0 at a point opposite to where the ends are secure, is held down in place thereby. The fingerpieces 0 pass downward through the perforated bed a, and are bent outward, as shown, so that they may be manipulated with the greatest convenience.
The parts thus described can be arranged together with the, greatest facility and ease, without any riveting, soldering, or other similarly tedious process, by simply springing the same together, where they will remain without liability to become disengaged. The parts It i 0 are stamped up in one integral piece of sheet metal.
The device as a whole can be constructed at a very small cost, is effective in its operations, will not interfere with the flame, and is not liable to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the base a, cap I), and wick-tube d, of the perforated plate 6, having pivotal projections g thereon, pivoted semi-caps h, closing finger-pieces projecting through the said base a, and the spring, all said parts being arranged and operating sub stantially as herein set forth and shown.
I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of December, 1882.
JOHN POHLSEN.
