Application November 18, 1954, Serial No. 469,622
1 Claim. (Cl. 155-177) This invention relates to a beauty chair tray and more particularly to a tray designed to be attached to a beauty chair for the convenience of an operator.
Heretofore, beauty chair trays have been designed for accomplishing the same general function but such trays were not capable of the same degree of adjustability as that provided by the instant invention. Such prior art trays could not perform all of the functions capable of being performed by the present invention and were, therefore, quite restricted in their application.
According to the present invention, there is provided a tray having a substantially U-shape in plan view having a sloping bottom so that the base of the U is deeper than the arms thereof. Bracket means are provided for supporting this tray on the back of a beauty chair. Novel supporting means are provided which permit the adjustment of the tray forward and backwards with respect to the chair back. This permits the ready adjustment of the tray so that it may be located around the head of any customer. There is further provided means for vertically adjusting the tray and for tilting the tray to any desired angle, if desired.
Thus, there is provided a beauty chair tray which fits about the head of a person whose hair is to be treated. The tray can be used to hold curlers or other equipment used in connection with the treatment of hair. The tray is also useful in connection with shampooing or cutting the hair as it provides a ready receptacle for the reception of water or cut hair.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide a tray which is designed to be secured to the back of a beauty chair and is of a U-shape so as to fit around the head of a person sitting in such a chair.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a beauty chair tray which is capable of being adjusted both vertically and horizontally and may also be tilted to any desired angle.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of the present invention will become apparent upon consideration of the detailed specification when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view through the adjusting means; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view along the lines 55 of Fig. 4.
Referring now specifically to Fig. 1, there is shown at 1 a tray which has a substantially U-shape in plan View and is provided with padding 2 along the inner surface of the U for the comfort of a person with whom the tray is being used. The tray is preferably made of plastic, although it may be made of any suitable material and is provided with a sloping bottom as shown at 3 in Fig. 2 so that the end portion of the tray is deeper than the forward arms of the U.
There is provided in the bottom surface of the tray a portion 4 having a T-shaped slot 5 cut therein. The upper surface of this slot is provided with a plurality of recessed portions 6 as shown in Fig. 2. Disposed within T-shaped slot 5 is a block 7 which is similarly shaped. This block is provided with means for adjusting the tray horizontally as will be presently described more fully. Secured to the lower surface of block 7 is a swivel 8 provided with an adjusting thumb screw 9 so that the tray may be tilted with respect to the chair. The swivel 8 is in turn connected to a vertically extending bar 10 provided with a series of apertures 11 and this bar is secured within a bracket 12 fixed to a chair back 13. Bracket 12 is provided with any suitable means such as thumb screw 14 which cooperates with apertures 11 so that the vertical position of tray 1 may be adjusted as desired.
Referring now to Fig. 4, it can be seen that block 7 is provided with a bore 15 having a screw threaded plug 16 secured in the end thereof. Within this bore there is disposed a cam bar 17 having a cam 18 on the end portion thereof. The opposite end 19 of this bar extends through a bore in plug 16 and provides an operating button. The cam bar 17 is maintained in the position shown in Fig. 4 through the cooperation of a spring 20 and stop-pin 21. Spring 20 acts against a disc 22 which abuts cam 18. In the position shown in Fig. 4 cam 18 abuts a latch-pin 23 which is spring pressed by a spring 24 into engagement with the cam. The latch-pin 23: has an end portion thereof which extends through block 7 into engagement with the recesses 6 in the bottom of tray 1. It can be seen that by inwardly depressing the operating pin 19 the cam 18 will be pushed inwards so that latch-pin 23 may drop out of engagement with recesses 6. The tray 1 may then be adjusted to the desired horizontal position and the latch bar is then released and the spring 24) returns the cam to its original position, there by locking the tray 1.
It can be seen that there has been provided a tray for use in connection with a beauty chair which may be adjusted horizontally by a novel mechanism and which may also be shifted vertically and tilted at any angle to suit any operational requirement.
Obviously, many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in the light of the above teachings.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A tray for a beauty chair comprising, in combination, a tray having a substantially U-shape and a sloping bottom surface, said tray having a T-shaped slot in the lower surface thereof, the upper surface of said T-shaped slot being provided with a plurality of recesses, a block received within said slot, a latch-pin slidably mounted in the upper surface of said block for cooperation with said recesses, means urging said latch-pin out of engagement with said recess, a cam mounted in said block maintaining said latch-pin in engagement with one of said recesses, and means for shifting the position of said cam to release said latch-pin whereby said tray may be selectively positioned.
