In a chair, in which the contour of the seat and back rest are adjustable for orthopaedic purposes, a rigid wood or plastics plate 21 is moved towards or away from a base plate 11, of the seat or back-rest, by a screw 20, against the end 23 of which, it is resiliently urged, preferably by rubber bands 25. An elastomer layer 13 may be of foam rubber or polyurethane.
