United States Patent O The present invention relates to garment hangers, and V particularly to 'a hanger adapted to hold 'a g-arment thereon against slippage. The :average garment 'hanger includes garment 'supporting arms, usually held by 'a centrally located ho'ok, th'e shoulder portions 'of 'the garmen-t being draped over the arms. Such a yconstruction does not 'at all times properly 'hold the garment, particularly if the hanger is supp'orting so-called Synthetic fab-` dres'ses, 'or evening -gowns.
An 'obj'ect 'of the present invention is to provide a garment hanger so `c'onstructed and 'arranged 'as to hold la gar'ment seeurely, and without 'damage "t'hereto.
A further object is to provide a garment h'anger wherein the garment supported by the 'hanger is prevente'd from slipping thereon.
A further object is to provide a garment hanger which is inexpensive in cost of manufacture, adaptable for the holding of many different forms of garment, and which is superior to -garment hangers now known to the inventor.
In the 'drawingz `Figure 1 is a front elevation of the garmen-t hanger as an en-t-irety,
Figure 2 is a top plan view 'of the garment hanger shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional View on the 'line 3-3 of 'Figure 1, and on an enlarged scale,
'Figure 4 is -a fragmentary sectional View of a certain portion of the hanger, and,
Referring now with particularity to 'the drawing, the improved garment hanger includes a pair of arms 1 and 2, joined by a central enlargemen't 3 'to which enlargement is 'secured a h'ook 4 for supporting the hanger. In the present instance, the threade'd ho'ok sh'ank 5 is passed vertically through the enlargement 3, and secured by 'a nut 6. 'It will be observed that the sh'ank is provided with a ring or loop 7. This permi'ts a furt'her hanger to be secured to the primary hanger by passing the supporting hoolt of the secondary hanger through the loop '7.
Each arm 1 'and 2 terminates in an end 'depen'ding hook, as shown at 8 and '9, the h'ooks facing inwardly of and below the arms of the hanger. It is prefera-ble, although not essential, 'to increase the 'transverse width of the arms 1 and 2 to substantially ovoid in plan, 'as shown in Figure 2, at 10, and to curve the top surfaces at 11 '(see 'Figure 3), so as to 'properly support 'the shoulder'portions of a garment. Each arm is provided with a ' transverse slot 12 and 13. Joining 'the arms and beneath the same is a cross rod 14, 'and carried on the cross rod is a ;pair `of clips 15 and 16. These clips 'are detailed in Figu'res 3 andV 5, and comprise, in each in- 'stance, a pair of jaws 17 and 18, having tabs or handles 19 and '29, said jaws being hinged together at 21. This hinging is accomplis'hed by providing. as the hinge pin the cross rod 14, there being a coil spring interposed between the jaws and 'sur'round-ing the cross ro'd, as shown at 22. Thus, the jaws 17 and 1'8 are urge'd into engagement. Preferably, each jaw -has eonvergently t-ape'r-ing sides, the convergence being tow'ard the jaw end, with rics, silks, low cut summer and 'partially "ice the inner surfaces of each jaw relieved at 23 'and 24, with the outer surfaces of 'each jaw curved, 'as 'shown at 25 and 26, to provide sharp p'ointed and smooth jaw ends. As shown, the jaws 17 and 18 eXtend through the ' slots 12 and 13, the slots being of sufficien't width to permit the jaws to swing apart when 'the tabs or 'handles 19 and 20 are pressed together. Furthermore, the jaw ends extend a slight distance 'above the top surface of each arm of the hanger.
Other features 'of construction of 'the hanger consi'st in provi'ding L-shaped slots in the top surface of each arm, as shown at 27 and 28.
The operation, uses and 'a'dvantages of the invention just des'cribed are as follows:
'When the :garment is draped upon 'the hanger, the handles or tabs 19 and 20 'are moved to open the jaws. The lining of the garment, if i-t is a 'coat, is then positioned s'o as to be gripped by the jaws, preferably at a searn, -in the manner shown in Figure 3. -As the jaws 'are tapered as to width, and 'the j'aws are 'so constructed and arranged a's to be substantially 'sharp-p'ointed, the grip 'of the jaws upon the lining 29 of the garment, will be firm and will not permi't the garment to slip or move on the hanger. The relieved ' porti'ons 23 and 24 for the tips of the jaws allows space for receiving 'a porti'on iof the lining which 'has been gripped. This is important where 'Synthetic fabrics, 'such as 'Da'cron, Orl'on, 'silk and the like, are used in garment construction, as it is a notable 'fact that garments of this 'material have a ten'dency to slide from a hanger. The hanger may incorporate other clips, as 'shown in Figure 1, the clips being carried upon the cross 'rod 14. Oftti'rnes, if the garment hanger is to be used for the holding of womeni's wear, the straps on 'slips may 'be pla'ced 'over the 'arms of the 'hanger and received within the L-shaped slots 27 -and 28, as shown in Figure 4, a Strap of the garment being shown at 30.
'T hus, the hanger of the present invention -inc'orporates numerous 'desirable features, such 'as the end ho'ok's '8 and 9, which may be utilized for the h'anging of Various garrnents, and particularly garments having loops or straps. and 16, may be m'oved upon the cross rod 14, 'so a's to be adjustable as to spacing for the securing 'of garments, and in fact, 'the slots 12 and 13 may be of 'elongated form to -allow variable spacing for clips 15 and 1'6, to thereby assure that the main garment 'supported by the hanger will be maintained in a 'correct position, and in a position 'such that the garinent will not be mussed.
