FORM WALL PANEL 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 l/VVE/VTOR ARTHUR E. TRO/EL QM r- H/S ATTORNEYS United States Patent FORM WALL PANEL Arthur E. Troiel, Berkeley, Calif assignor to Troiel gon panies, Inc., Berkeley, .Calif., a corporation of Caliorma Application May 21, 1951, Serial 'No. 227,483
4 Claims. (Cl. 25-131) through the use of which form walls may be quickly and accurately fabricated;
3. To provide a novel and improved form-wall panel which lends itself to the fabrication of form walls which are rugged and will resist distortion or'bulging under the pressure of poured concrete *or the like.
4. To provide a novel and improved form-wall panel which will cooperate with like panels to form substantially leak-proof seams along their contiguous edges.
5.. To provide a novel and improved form-wall panel for use in the fabrication of form walls and which may be reused repeatedly and without waste; and
6. To provide a novel and improved form-wall panel for use in the fabrication .of form walls which may be readily disassembled following use.
Additional objects of my invention will be brought out in the following description of a preferred embodiment of the same taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein,
Figure 1 ,is a three-dimensional view of a panel incorporating the features of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a three-dimensional fragmentary view of the panel of Figure 1, illustrating a step in the fabrication of .such panel; l y Figure 3 is a three-dimensional fragmentary view of a form wall utilizing panels of the present invention in the fabrication of such wall.
Referring to the drawings for'details of my invention in its preferred form, the form wall panel comprises a panel frame 1 of substantially rectangular form. Such frame includes side and end members of angle-iron, each having a wall 3 thereof lying in a common plane and a wall 5 normal thereto. Panel reinforcing crossmembers 7 interconnecting the side members of the frame at spaced locations therealong, have an edge lying in the common plane previously referred to, and such reinforcing members in conjunction with the walls of the angle-iron frame members lying in the common plane, provide a solid foundation and support for a panel sheet 9 to be aflixed to the frame.
Prior efforts to affix the reinforcing crossmembers 7 into position through the use of welding were quite unsatisfactory, due to the fact that the heating caused unequal expansion and contraction of the frame members and resulted in distortion of such members. To overcome this difiiculty, I provide each reinforcing crossmember with end tongues 11 and in the side frame members, at the points of attachment of such reinforcing crossmembers, I provide perforations 13 to receive such tongues. The ends of such tongues, following insertion in such openings, are then subjected to localized heat at Patented Aug. 6, 1957 iCC welding temperature. Upon reaching such temperature, the source of heat is removed, and while in such heated condition and during the process of cooling, the tongues are spread into intimate contact with the surrounding surface of the perforations. Additional metal may be added 'during the heating up process if desired, whereupon a complete filling of the perforations will be realized upon completion of the operation. I have found that by anchoring the reinforcing crossmembers in this manner, the heat is localized to such a degree that no noticeable distortion results in the panel frame members.
The panel sheet 9, which may be of heavy gauge sheet metal, is preferably of an area corresponding to the area of the frame, but in applying the same to the frame, the panel sheet is disposed asymmetrically with respect to the frame, to provide an edge recess 15 along a side and end of the resulting panel and a corresponding overhanging edge 17 along the remaining side and end of the panel. Spot welding may be employed in affixing the panel sheet to the frame.
An anchor bar 19 extending longitudinally of the panel, is passed through the reinforcing crossmembers 7 in spaced relationship to the panel sheet 9 and is anchored at its ends to the end frame members as by welding.
To facilitate the assembling of such panels to form a form wall, the side and end frame members are perforated at regular intervals throughout their length to provide regularly spaced perforations 21 therethrough, and along that .side edge of the panel which involves the overhanging edge, the panel is provided with a plurality of notches 23. Such notches are of sufiicient depth to cut through the perforated wall of the associated side frame member, and to strengthen the side frame member atthese points, there is welded to the inner surface of such side member wall, a substantially semi-cylindrical reinforcing element 25 which coincides in contour with the inner end of the notch.
In assembling of a form wall in the process of building up a wall form, a number of such panels are assembled edge to edge with the overhanging edges 17 of one snugly meshing in the edge recesses 15 of the adjacent panels, and such panels are locked together by clips 27, each involving a U-shaped portion capable of snugly straddling the contiguous walls of adjacent panel frames, and provided with a pivot pin on an extension of its U-shaped portion, adapted for insertion through aligned perforations of the contiguous frame members prior to rotating the U-shaped portion into straddling position over the walls of said frame members. The panels are thereby not only properly aligned and held in tight edge-to-edge contact, but the clips themselves are thus securely anchored against accidental displacement or loss. The resulting form wall offers a smooth continuous surface facing.
A pair of such form walls, to comprise a wall form for the casting of a concrete wall or the like, are maintained in a desired spaced relationship with their smooth surfaces facing each other.
Bracing of the form Walls may be effected through the use of timbers such as 2 x 4 beams 43, certain of which are disposed horizontally across the panel frames while others are disposed transversely of the horizontally disposed beams, and all held under pressure to the form wall by suitable clamps 45.
It will be apparent that a very solid and substantial wall form may be readily assembled when utilizing the features of the present invention, and that upon pouring concrete therein and permitting the same to set, the form may thereafter be quickly disassembled and Without necessary destruction of any of the form wall components, whereby the same may be reused repeatedly.
The overlapping joints formed by the edge recesses and overhanging edges, create seams which are snug and essentially leak proof, thus assuring a wall of concrete or the like requiring but a minimum of work in the matter of applying the finishing touches to the wall. f
While .I have disclosed my invention in-its pfeferred form and in considerable detail, the same is subject to alteration and modification without departing from the basic principles involved, and I accordingly do not desire to be limited in my protection to the specific details illustrated and described except as may be necessitated by the appended claims.
