M I BY M MW United States Patent AUTOMATIC CAR SUDSER Charles Savona, Paterson, N. J.
Application March 20, 1956, Serial No. 572,712
1 Claim. (Cl. 15-130) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in automobile, etc., cleaners, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means whereby a vehicle or other object may be expeditiously and with a minimum of labor, soaped and rinsed off in a single operation.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the aforementioned character comprising a removable and replaceable sponge for engagement with the work, novel means for keeping said sponge saturated with a suitable cleaning solution.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is adapted to be connected to a supply of water under pressure for rinsing and for keeping the sponge wet.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a cleaning device of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the device ready to be used for cleaning;
Figure 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view with the sponge omitted; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view, showing the device ready to be used for cleaning and rinsing.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a canister or container of suitable material, preferably of aluminum, which is designated generally by reference character 6. The container 6, which is substantially oval in transverse section and which may be of any desired capacity, is for the reception of a cleaning solution, as indicated at 7, comprising water and any car wash, household or other suitable detergent. Toward this end, the forward end 8 of the container 6 is provided with a removable filler cap 9.
Mounted longitudinally beneath the bottom 10 of the container 6 is a pair of spaced, parallel elongated plates 11. The plates 11 include downwardly and inwardly bent outer marginal portions providing jaws in the form of flanges 12 for receiving and retaining a removable sponge 13 therebetween. The sponge 13 is inserted between the flanges 12 under suflicient compression to be retained thereby. Screws 14 secure the plates 11 in position beneath the container 6. At longitudinally spaced points the forward portion of the bottom 10 of the container 6 has formed therein discharge perforations 15. The perforations 15 are controlled by a valve 27 engageable beneath the container bottom 10. The valve 27 is fixed on the lower end of a stem 28 which extends upwardly through the container 6 and is provided on its upper end with a head or button 29. A coil spring 30 "Ice on the stem 28 is engaged beneath the button 29 for closing the valve 27. A vertical tubular housing 31 in the container 6 encloses the elements 28 and 30.
To use the device as thus far described, the sponge 13 is inserted between the flanges or jaws 12. The cap 9 is removed, the container 6 is filled with the solution 7, after which said cap is, of course, replaced. The sponge 13 is then wetted in any suitable manner and the valve 27 is opened for discharging the detergent 7 into said sponge. The car to be cleaned is then wetted down and the sponge 13 is worked thereover. Then the sudsing and rinsing of the car is completed by using the sudser in one hand and spraying the car with a hose held in the other hand.
Removably mounted on the rear portion of the container 6 is a bracket 16 in the form of an angulated tube. The bracket 16 includes a flattened, tapered lower portion or arm 17 which is closed at its forward end and which is secured longitudinally beneath the bottom 10 of the container 6 between the plates 11 through the medium of screws 18. A perforation 19 is provided in the lower portion of the member 17 for wetting the sponge 13.
A detachably Y-coupling 20 has one of its branches threadedly connected, as indicated at 21, to the upper end of the upstanding portion 22 of the bracket 16. A hose 23, from a suitable source of water supply, is connected to the coupling 20. Also detachably connected to the coupling 20 is a forwardly extending pipe 24. Mounted on the forward end of the pipe 24 is the control valve 25 of a forwardly and then downwardly extending nozzle 26.
In use, the pipe 24 functions as a handle. The car is soaped in the manner hereinbefore described. To rinse, the valve 25 is opened with the thumb of the hand which grips the handle or pipe 24. Thus, the car is cleansed and rinsed in a single operation with one hand.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A cleaning device comprising: a horizontally elongated container for the reception of a cleaning solution, said container including a bottom having discharge openings therein for the solution, a sponge removably mounted beneath said bottom for receiving the solution, an angular, tubular bracket on the rear end of the container and comprising a flattened perforated end portion secured thereto between said bottom thereof and the sponge, a Y-coupling on the other end of the bracket for connecting a hose thereto, a rigid pipe connected to the coupling and projecting forwardly therefrom over the container in spaced relation thereto and providing a handle therefor, a nozzle connected to the handle and projecting forwardly and downwardly therefrom beyond the container, said nozzle including a control valve operable by the hand which grips the handle, and a control valve for the discharge openings mounted on the container and operable from the handle.
