UNITED STATES PATENT Omron.
OI-IN GEORGE SCHWEINFURTH, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
`DEVICE VFOR CLEANING SLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591, 503, dated October 12, 1897'.
Application filed May 6, 1897- Serial No. 635,372. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, .Ton-N GEORGE ScHwEIN- FURTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning Slates, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as willl enable those skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for cleaning slates and other articles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in Which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improvement, and Fig. 2 a side View thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this speciication the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class herein specified which consists of a casing 5, which is preferably of the 'form shown in the drawings, said casing being fiat and oblong in form and preferably rectangular in cross-section.- The casing 5, however, may be of any desired shape, and oney end thereof is provided with spring clamps or jaws G, which are adapted to hold a sponge or similar device 7, and the end of said casing with which the clamps or jaws 6 are connected is provided with a central port or passage 8, and the oppositeend of said casing is also provided with a similar port or passage 9, and passing through said ports or passages 8 and 9 is a valve-rod 10, which is provided with a disk, plate, or head 11, between which and the end of the casing 5, in which the port or passage-9 is formed, is mounted a spiral Spring 12.
The` valve-rod 10 passes through both ends of said casing 5, and the end of said rod opposite that on which the spring 12 is mounted is provided with a valve 13, and mounted on said rod within the casing 5 and at a short distance from the valve 13 is a supplemental valve 14, and the rod 10 is also provided within the casing and adjacent to the end of the casing in which the port or passage 9 is formed with another valve 15.`
The valves 13, 14, and 15 are provided with soft packings or facings 16, and the casing 5 is adapted to be filled with water through the port or passage 9,' or in any desired manner, and in the normal position of the rod 10 the ports or passages 8 and 9 are closed by the valves 13 and 15 and the Water cannot pass out of said casing, and whenever it is desired to wet the sponge 7 the valve-rod l0 is depressed and the water flows through the port or passage 8 into said sponge.
The valve 14 is intended to limit the movement of the rod 10 when said rod is depressed against the operation of the spring 12 and to also close the port or passage 8, and when the said valve-rod 10 is operated as described enough Water Will pass through the port or passage 8 before the valve 1/1 is seated to saturate the sponge, or said valve-rod may beso operated as to open the port or passage 8 for any desired length of time.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it Will be apparent that changes in and modiflcations of the construction herein described may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its' advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A device for cleaning slates or other articles, consisting of a casing which is provided with ports or passages at both ends, means for connecting a sponge or similar article with one end thereof, a yspring-operated valve-rod passing longitudinally through said casing, and through said ports or passages at each end thereof, that end of said rod which passes through the end of the casing with which the sponge is connected, being provided with a valve which is mounted thereon outside of said casing, and said rod being also provided with a valve which is mounted thereon adjacent to the opposite end of said casing, and inside thereof, said valves being adapted to IOO close said ports or passages in eaeh end of myinvention I have signed my name, in pres said easing, and said rod being also provided enee of the subscribing Witnesses, this 1st within said easing and adjacent t0 the end day of May, 1897.
thereof with which the sponge is connected, y JOHN GEORGE SCHWEINFURTII.
5 with a supplemental valve, substantially as Vitnesses:
shown and described. T. S. MARSTON,
In testimony that I Claim the foregoing as II. V. TARRANT.
