Description

(No Model.) Y M. CAMPBELL.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
,857. Patented June 19, 188s.
STATE-s' AkrnixrrV OFFICE.
, MALCOLM'CAMPBELL, or HoLY'oKn, MAssAoHUsn'rrs;
` 'srEcr-nrcarroiv t; A 1 To all whom it may concern,.- Be it known that I, .MALCOLM CAMPBELL, al citizen of the United States of America, residying at Holyoke, in the county oi' 'Hampden 4 5 and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain. new a'ndffusei'ul Improvements 4in Door- Butts; and I-do hereby declare .thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,- such as will enablexothers skilled min the art to which it'appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tol letters r gu res of reference marked thereon, which for-m a part of this specification. I5 lThis invention relates to certain new and useful `improvements in door-butts, as will be hereinafter set ,fort-h, andfpointed out in the claims 5 and its object isto provide a door-butt whiehis composed-of two parts, of simple 2o construction, by means of which adoor may. be-hung upon thesame, andV which will provide-a means for adjusting the door so as to accommodate the casing when the door or casing shrinks or settles, which can be accomplished without removing the door from the hinge. In the annexed drawings, forming a part, of this specification, Fignre'i is a perspective view. Fig. 2 a 'front elevation,4 partly in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the line :c ol' Fie'. 2. Figui is a detailed perspective view,- and Fig. 5 is aview of the pintle detached. In the annexed drawings, A is a leaf, which -carrieslthe pintle. The butt of-thisxleaf is out away for the reception of the set-nut 'a','which ,is circular in shape and corresponds in'sizeV withV the butt within which it is placed. This nut is provided onits circumference with per- 4o forations for thereception ,of a tool when it is desired vto turnthe saine for the purpose of raising or lowering the pintle. The butt of the leaf A is provided with a set-screw, a', which vpasses through the pintle-socket and presses upon the pintle. This set-screw is of A,such a size that when it is in place it will not extend beyond the surface of the butt, there- .by rendering it unnecessary to remove a pr-. `tion from the adjacent leaf. The upper part 5o of the butt on the leaf A. is cut away so as to Jform a recess, e, which will allow the pintle.

`forming' `part of Letters Patent No. 279,857, datedJune 19, 1883. l ,'lplication filed July 26, 18853. Renewed May 24, 18H3. (No model.) l
having an olset, as will be hereinafter de scribed, toturn within said recess.l Y The pintle B,l which is shown detached in Fig. `5 of tlledrawings, is screw-threaded at its lower portion, 7, the end being provided with a slotb. This pintle is provided-near its central port-ion with an offset, c, thus forming the upper and lower portions out of line.
The leat- C, as far as external appearances' are concerned, is of` ordinary' construction, and its butt C is provided lwith a socket to receive tlieupper lend of the pintle B. The socket in this butt is formed eccentric with its walls, as shown inFig, 3. The leaf C of the hingeis hung upon the pintle in the usual manner. Between the'point where the two ,butts rest upon each other-I providea cap or shell, E, which fits over thevbutt C and pintle projecting rim, f, which'is cut away at its central portion, so as to leave acireular opening which is of the same-size as the recess c in the upper part ofthe .butt of the leaf A. The walls of this shell extend upwardly, and itis provided with4 a slot, g, which -its around the but-t C. Thistslot g allows the shell to slide saine away. Y
The leaf A is lcut away, as-shown at h, so as vto allowthe shell E to turn freely with the adjacent leaf of thenhinge. The shoulder on 'the upper part of this cut-away portion h prevents the shell from risingwhn the leaf .GL is adjusted upwardly.- By means of this shell the joint of the hinge is covered, and the point of separation, when the leafV C is'adjusted. or raised upwardly, is hid. Y The butt C of the leaf C is provided with an eccentric' socket for the purpose of keeping the butt on the center when it rests upon the pintle having the offset. l y
If' desirable, the pi tle B may. be lstraight and screwthreaded, as shown, and when thus used the hinge will be only capable of a vertical adjustment. v, .Y The operation of adjustingea door hung on Ymy improved hinge Vor butt is as follows: If the door requires to be raised or lowered in the frame, the sec-screw cis loosened, and,
`by means of a suitably-pointed tool, the set-.
nut a. is turned, which operation raises or low B. This.shell.has..o.n..i.ts base'an 'i-nwardlyon the leaf C and dispenses with cutting the ers the .pint1e, which carries ivith it the door I screw threaded portion Ii,
to which the adjacent leaf of the hinge is attached'. v-
'If it is desirable to adjust the door sidewise or laterally, a screw-driver is inserted in the sloty at the lower end of the pintle and turned. This causes the pintle and sockethingc, which rests upon this pintle, to be thrown in or out.
By means of the hereinbefore-deseribed hinge, it will be seen that doors which are hung in-casings which are settled, or in which the doors do not siving clear, may be adjusted vertically or laterally without removing the door from its hinges.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide a hinge with anadjustable pintle, and I do not claim such as my invention; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv l. In a door-butt, the leaf A, having recess e, .set-screw a.,"-and adjusting-nut a, in conibiT nation with theipintle B, having offset 'c and l substantially as shown.
2. In combination with leaf A, having a pintle with an offset, a leaf having a' butt provided with an eccentric socket, substantially j as shown.
ed to slide upon the upper butt, substantially as described.
4. The leaf A, provided Withpintle B, having offset c, screw-threaded portion b, and slot b', adj Listing-nut a, and set-screw a', in combination with the adjacent leaf having eccentric socket or pintlcbearing and joint-coverer E, substantially as described, and for thc purpose set forth. 'f
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
