W. VALENTINE DUST PAN.
Patented June 19, 1883.
N PETERS, PhoIn-Lilhngnp UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM M. VALENTINE, OF GLEN COVE, NEV YORK.
DUST- PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,676, dated June 19, 1883,
Application filed April 28, 1883. (No model.)-
' hold the dust-pan with the foot while sweeping dust into the same, thereby avoiding the stooping posture usual. while gathering up dust from the floor. The pan can also be moved from place to place by the foot, and provision is made for hanging-up the dust-pan when not in use.
In the drawings. Figure 1 is a plan view of the dust-pan. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section and Fig. 3 is a rear view, the handle being in section.
The dust-pan A is of any ordinary or desired shape or size. It is preferably made with the bottom a. sides I), and back 0, the upper edges of the sides and back-being"wired 'to strengthen the sheet metal and it is preferable that the bottom be formed with an inclined surface to the rear of the edge 2, that rests upon the floor, and that the portion 3 of the bottom be either level or sloping slightly downward, so that dust swept into the pan will not slip out in moving the pan. There is a frame, e, preferably of two pieces of bandiron that correspond nearly to the shape of the back and sides of the dust-pan. These pieces 6 are attached to the sides of the pan by rivets at i, and their back ends are united to the foot-piece f, and there is a rest, Z, at the rear part of the foot-piece, so that when the toes of the foot are pressed upon the foot-piece the said foot-piece and frame ewill be brought down to the floor, or nearly so, and the front edge of the dust-pan held firmly upon the floor, so that dust may be swept into the pan while in this position. The upright n extends from the foot-piece f to the handle 0, and said upright is a guard to keep the foot of the person upon the foot-piece while holding the pan or moving it from place to place.
The handle 0 is preferably made with wooden cheek-pieces 4 4, secured to the sides of the metal body to lessen the weight, and to give a larger surface for the hand in grasping such handle. There is a connection, 8, from the front end of the handle to the middle part of the back of the. dust-pan. This may be formed of sheet metal, or as a flange cast with the handle.
The rest Z is made as a loop in order that the pan may be hung up when not in use, the loop passing over the nail or screw uponwhich the pan is hung.
I claim as my invention- 1; The combination, with the dust-pan, of a frame attached to the same, at or near the sides thereof, the foot-piece at the back part of the frame, and a loop or rest at the rear part of the footpiece, substantially as set forth.
2. The foot-piece having a loop by which it can be suspended, in combination with the dust-pan, and a frame extending from the footpiece to the dust-pan and connected therewith, substantially asset forth.
3. In combination with the dust pan, a frame, a foot-piece, and a handle extending above the foot-piece, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the foot-piece, of a bearing at the rear of the foot-piece, a handle above such foot-piece, with wooden sides to such handle, the dust-pan, and a frame between the dust-pan and the foot-piece, sub stautially as set forth.
Signed by me this 26th day of April, 1883. WM. M. VALENTINE.
