BROAD STROKE! PEN Filed 0ct. 11, 1956 F INVENTOR.
DONALD H. LEHR ATTORNEYS BROAD srueuu FEEN Donald H. Lehr, Audubou, N. J., assiguor to C. ll-Eewaral Haut Peu Co. Cumdeu, N. J., a corporaiiou cf New Jersey This iuveution relates to a peu and, more particularly, a broad stroke peu. The peu in aceordauce wih this iuveutiou has particular utility, for exarnple, in commercial letteriug. it provides an eveu flow of iuk which results in a stroke of coutrolled Width irrespective of iuequalities of band pressure. This is in marked eoutrast to a couveutioual letter iug brush. Further, 'it is sufficiently flexible so as to fiacilitate the letteriug from a broad line to a narrow liue.
It is therefore the broad object of this inveutiou to provide a peu suitable for the formation of a stroke of coutrolled width and which has a superior ink flow characteristic.
It is a further object cf this iuveutiou to provide a peu which eau letter from a broad liue to a na-rrow 1iue.
These and other objects of this iuveution will become appareut on readiug the followiug description in eonjuucv tion with the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a frout elevation of a peu in accrdauce with thisiuventiou;
Figure 2 is a side elevatiou of the peu cf Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a rear elevation cf the peu of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an exploded view 0f the peu of Figure 1;
Figure 5 illustrates the mauipulatiou of the peu of Figure 1 from a broad stroke to a fiue liue;
Figure 6 shows lau alternative way of mauipulatiug the peu in Figure 1 from a broad stroke to a fiue liue.
As shown in the figures, a peu 2 in aecordauce With this iuveutiou has a plurality of thiu resilieut leaves 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 of spring metal which are provided with parallel slots 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 50 and 32, respectively, leadiug upwardly from the writiug end 33 of the peu a substantial distauce. The slots in each leaf lie opposite a solid portiou of the adjaceut leaf 01' leaves. As illustrated, the slots in each leaf lie substautially opposite the ceuter line of the fiugers formed by the slots in the adj aceut leaf or leaves. The end leaves 4 and 16 are set to curve inwardly at their lower euds With the lower edges abuttiug against the adjaceut leaves.
By way of example, the metal used for the leaves may be spring steel, staiuless steel, brass, copper or ziuc. It is preferred to employ at least two diflereut metals in formiug the leaves so th=at adjaceut leaves will be of differeut metals. For exarnple, a preferred embodiment is Where leaves 4, 8, 12 and 16 are formed of staiuless steel and leaves 6, and 14 are formed of brass. However, auy two or more differeut spring metals cau be employed. The use of diflereut metals results in a peu haviug highly superior freedom of actiou which is of particular value as the leugth of use iucreases.
It is preferred vco employ leaves haviug a miuimum leugth of 1" and to have the leugflh of the slots extend a substautial distance from the writing end cf the peu towards the head cf the peu preferably a distauce at least 50% cf the length cf the leaves.
The radjaceut leaves are separated by spacers 34, preferably of metal, which lie opposite the uuslotted portiou cf the leaves. The assembly of leaves and spaeers is secured to a head plate 36 by means of a band 38. The leaves, spacers and head plate 36 are each provided with It is particularly advantageous in that 2,79=604 7 P.aaeuted inne 18, 1957 side cutout portious 40 for the receptien 0f band 33 which is clamped into the position shown in Figures 1 through 3.
In operation the peu 2 is dipped into iuk to a depth approxirnately equal to the leugth cf the slots. The space betweeu the leaves and the slots act as a reservoir for the ink and the iuk feeds down to he workiug edge of the peu primarily through the slots.
Figure 5 illustrates the formation of a relatively broad stroke and mauipulatiou of the peu through approximately to forru a very thiu liue. Figure 6 illustrates goiug frorn a br0ad stroke to a thiu stroke by flexiug the peu so that only a small portiou of the workiug edge of the peu is beariug ou the paper.
Itis uot desired to be limited except as set forth in the following claims.

A peu comprisiug a plurality of resilieut leaves, each leaf beiug provided with a plurality of substautially parallel slots exteudiug for a substantial distance from the writing end of the peu towards the head of the peu, the slots of adjacent leaves beiug staggered With respect to each other, spacers lyiug betweeu the uou-slotted portions of adjaceut leaves, and means to secure said leaves and said spacers together into a single assembly.
- 2. A peu cornprisiug a plurality of resilieut leaves, each leaf beiug provided With a plurality of substautially parallel slots exteudiug for a substautial distauce from the vyritiug end of the peu towards the head cf the peu, the slots of adjaceut leaves being staggered with respect t0 each ot*her, spacers lyiug betweeu the uou-slotted portious of adjacent leaves, and means to secure said leaves and said sp=acers together into a Single assembly, the outer leaves in the assembly being curved inwardly.
3. A peu eomprisiug a plurality of resilient leaves cf spring u1etal, each leaf beiug provided With a plurality 0f substantially parallel slots exteudiug for a substautial distauce froru the Writiug end of the peu towards the head of the peu, the slots of adjacent leaves beiug staggered Wifih respect to each other, spacers lyiug betweeu the nonslotted portious of adjaceut leaves, and means to secure said leaves and said spacers together into a siugle assembly, the outer leaves in the assembly being eurved inwardly.
4. A peu comprising a plurality of resilieut leaves of spring metal, adjacent leaves being of different metals and each leaf beiug provided wit1h a plurality of substautially parallel slots exteudiug for a substautial distance from the Writiug end of the peu towards the head of the peu, the slots of adjacent leaves beiug staggered with respect to each other, spaeers lyiug betweeu the uouslotted portions of adjaceut leaves, and means to secure said leaves and said spacers together into a siugle assembly.
5. A peu comprisiug a plurality of resilieut leaves of spring metal, adjacent leaves being of dilferent metals and each leaf being provided with a plurality of substantially parallel slots exteucliug for a substautial distance froru the writiug end of the peu towards the head of the peu, the slots of adjacent leaves beiug staggered with respect I0 each other, spacers lyiug betweeu the nou-slotted portious of adjaceut leaves, and means to secure said leaves and said spacers together into a Single assembly, the outer leaves in the assembly being curved inwardly.
