Fig. 12 is an edge elevational view of the blank shown in Fig. l1, the dotted lines showing the modiiied band in its final form.
Fig. 13 is a perspective View of the modified band in its completed form, per se, portions being broken away.
The container constituting the present invention includes three main components, these .being -a housing or casing 10, a lipstick holder .support band 12, and a lipstick 14 including a holder and stick element.
Considering iirst the construction of the housing, this in the illustrated example is formed from a single piece of thin sheet metal, which in blank appears as in Fig. 7, but it will be understood .at this time that other materials, such as plastic, might be used. j Y
The container is relatively elongated, and is of rcctangular cross section, including a at top wall 16 having rounded ends, a at bottom wall 18 also having rounded ends and having its periphery in registration with that of the top wall, a first side wall Z0, and an opposite side wall comprising coplanar, connected side wall portions 22, 24 integrally formed upon the top yand bottom walls 16, 18, respectively, as shown to best advantage in Fig. 7.
The side Walls are of such length as to terminate short of the rounded end portions of the top and bottom walls, and as a result, there is formed -in the completed housing front and rear end openings 26, 28, with the construction being one that forms said end openings so that they eX- tend along the sides of the housing 'a short distance as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the rounded end portions providing top and bottom walls on the openings.
Formed in the side wall 2t) is an elongated longitudinal slot 30, the opposite ends of which are closed and are disposed adjacent the respective openings 26, 28.
The top and bottom walls are formed with inwardly facing, confronting, continuous peripheral grooves 32, 34, respectively, said grooves being formed by pressing the same out ofthe material of the blank as shown in Fig. 7.
Referring now to` the lipstick support band, this has been generally designated at 12 and is shown per se in Fig. 9. The band is formed of an endless length of spring steel, or alternatively, from thin plastic material having the characteristic of springable flexibility, thus to permit the top and bottom edges of the band to be engaged in the confronting grooves 32, 34. The band thus assumes an oblong shape corresponding to that of the grooves, with rounded ends, and is slidable within` the grooves when assembled with the housing.
Secured xedly to one side Wall of the band is an outwardly, laterally projecting handle 40, the base of which is extended through the slot 30 of the housing. Opposite the handle 40, the band is formed with an elongated, wide slot 3S.
The'lipstick 14 is provided with a cup 42 which in the illustrated example is of rectangular conformation, one end lof said cup being engaged in one en'd of the slot 38. The cup is xedly secured to the band, and the lipstick 44 supported therein projects forwardly within the housing, in the space between the side walls of the band as shown in Fig. 3. l
In manufacturing the device, the band is engaged in one or the other of the openings 32, 34, after which the material of the blank is bent upwardly in the manner shown in Fig. 8, the side wall portions 22, 24 being brought together and being lixedly secured by spot welding, crimping, or in any other suitable manner. Prior to insertion of the band in the housing, the cup 42 is engaged therewith, and this completes the construction of the device.
In use, the container will normally be closed as shown in Fig. 1, with the handle 40 at the forward end of the slot 30 and the lipstick 40 retracted. In this position of 3 the parts, the slot 33 extends along the straight side wall of the band, opposite the handle as shown in Fig. 3.
When the lipstick is to be extended, the handle 4@ is grasped and shifted to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3, at the opposite end ofthe slot 30. This causes 'same arrives at the front end of the casing approximately simultaneously with the uncovering of the opening 26. As a result, continued movement of the handle 46 to the left in Fig. 3 causes the lipstick to travel in an opposite direction, out of the slot 38 to the extended position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4.
When the lipstick is to be retracted, the handle is simply shifted in a return direction, and as the lipstick becomes fully withdrawn into the casing, the unslotted portion of the band will again move across vthe front of the housing to close the same.
It will be seen that the housing is completely closed when the lipstick is not in use, protecting the lipstick against dirt and other foreign particles, and also against deterioration caused by full exposure to atmosphere.
In Figs. 11-13, there is shown a modified lipstick support band 12a, which is used with the cosmetic stick 44 and with the housing 10. The modified construction is villustrative of an arrangement wherein the lipstick support band can be formed entirely from a single length of sheet metal material, and will be so designed as to be integrally provided both with a handle and with a lipstick support cup or holder. The band 12a, thus, includes an integral handle 40a, and a stick support cup or holder 42a.
Originally, the band in blank constitutes an elongated, rectangular length of thin sheet metal material, and cut in the blank, adjacent one end thereof, is a horizontally extending, U-shaped slit defining the portion of the blank that is to provide the handle 40a. Approximately medially between the opposite ends of the blank, there is cut therein another horizontally extending, U-shaped slit, one end of which is rounded.` The material of the blank is cut out at the rounded end of the slit, and between the legs of the U-shaped slit there is dened a flat tongue which is to form the stick support cup 42a.
At the base of the tongue, there is defined a transverse bend line 46, and spaced apart along said bend line are V-shaped slits defining teeth 52. At the free end of the tongue similar teeth 54 are formed, and intermediate the -opposite ends of the tongue, there are provided transverse,
spaced bend lines 48, 50.
To form the hand, the tongue is bent laterally along the line 46, and the teeth 52. projected laterally inwardly of the band as shown in Figs. l2 and 13. AThen, the tongue is bent along line 48 in an opposite direction, and then bent once again, in the same direction as it was bent along the line 48, along the line 50. This provides a holder of U-shaped section as shown in Fig. 13, the teeth 54 being projected laterally, inwardly of the holder in confronting relation to the teeth 52. The bending of the tongue to the shape illustrated defines the slot 38a in the completed band, and the handle 4th is disposed opposite said slot and is struck laterally, outwardly from the material of the band as shown in Fig. 13. The end portions of the band are bent along curving lines so as to provide the oblong band with rounded ends as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 12, the opposite extremities of the blank abutting against one another as shown in Fig. 13. Said 'extremities of the blank need not be xedly connected to one another, since the band will hold its shape when engaged in the grooves 32, 34, butif desired, they can be xedly connected in a suitable manner.
The stick 44 is engaged in the U-shaped holder 42a,
21 and the teeth SZ, 54 will penetrate the same to insure its being properly held in position.
The construction of Figs. ll-l3 is particularly adapted to facilitate production of the band from thin, spring steel material at a minimum of cost, so that said band and the casing 1i) can both be formed from blanks of thin sheet metal material. The construction of Figs. 11-13 permits the entire device to be made from only two pieces of material, the blanks of which are shown in Figs. 7 and 11, respectively.
In use of the modified form, the operation of extending and retracting the lipstick is identical to that described in reference to the rst form of the invention, movement of the handle 40a in one direction causing movement of the lipstick in an opposite direction, for the purpose of extending or retracting the lipstick as the case may be.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
