SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,227, dated June 12, 1883.
` Application filed January 22, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern' Be it known that I, PAUL J. CULLINAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates particularly to combs designed for the use of the toilet, which have the teetharranged all on one side; and my invention consists in combining with a comb, made of horn or any well-known material, a section composed entirely of metal; also, in the combination and arrangement, with'the metallic section of the comb, of a metallic generator, composed of suitable positive and negative metals, which, when aoted upon by the dampness of the hair, will produce an electrical current. These objects I attain by the construction shown'in the aiccompanying drawing, which represents in side elevation a comb made according to my invention, a part of the upper portion being shown in section.
Let a represent one-half part of the comb, and b the other portion. The part a is composed of horn, rubber, or of any one of the well-known materials generally employed in such articles. The remaining portion, b, inoluding the teeth, is made of metal, and the two portions are connected together, as shown in the accompanying drawing. The horn section a of the comb is 'constructed in the usual manner, excepting that the back or head has an elongated end, a', which is cut away to the proper dimensions to enable it to enter and fit tightly within the hollow or recessed head or back b' of the metallic section b. The two parts a and b are thus brought up flush with each other, so as to form a tight joint. The back or head b' of the metallic portion of the comb is shown constructed hollow its entire length; but this is a matter of convenience only, as it may be I recessed to an extent just suflicient to allow of the insertion of the end a' and the plates forming the generator.
In forming the galvanic battery I prefer to employ narrow strips of copper and zinc and an intermediate layer of cloth, preferably rubber cloth. These may be arranged above the teeth and flat on the lower portion of the head or baek b', with their ends or other points in contact.
c represents the strip or plate of zinc, d the strip of copper, and e the intermediate strip or piece of cloth, the ends of which project outside of and are bent down between the teeth composing the two sections of the comb,

In some cases I may prefer to make the entire back portion, b', of zinc and secure it by solder or by other suitable means to a strip bear,- ing the teeth, (which may be made of brass,) when the stiip of zinc o, here shown, may be dispensed with.
The outer surf-acc of the metal portion b of the comb may be finished up by giving to it either a coat of nickel or silver plating, as desired.
VVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A comb formed of two parts, one composed entirely of metal, with a hollow back .to receive an elongated end on the back of the other section, whereby the two parts are secured together, and having the plates c d and intermediate strip of rubber cloth, e, arranged within said back and projecting outside thereof and in contact with the teeth, at one end, substan- 'tially as and for the purpose set forth.
