Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM JEFFERS, OF PAWTUOKET, RHODE ISLAND.
PUMP-VALVE.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 27,909, dated April 17, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JErrnRs, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pump-Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l, is a central section of a fire engine valve constructed according to my invention representing it closed. Fig. 2, is a similar section representing the valve open. Fig. 3, is a plan of t-he same.
vSimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable ot-hers skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, is the valve seat.
B, is the outer portion of the valve represented of annular form fitted to the seat A, and working on a hinge a, a, at one side of the seat.
C, is the inner portion of the valve made like an ordinary valve and fitted to a seat b, o, formed around the opening 0, c, of the annular portion, and applied to work on the same hinge a, a. The said portion O,
has attached to its under or inner side a bent finger cl, which projects under or at the back of the portion B, for the purpose of opening the latter portion, if it should fail to be opened by the water after C, has been opened a short distance.
As -the stroke of the pump commences, the portion C, of the valve opens first, but its opening is followed instantly by the yopening of the portion B, and hence two passages are formed for the water, viz., the usual one between A, and B, and another one between B, and C, and by this mea-ns the pump is filled and discharged more freely and the pump is enabled to be worked with a less amount of power than when the ordinary valves are employed.
I do not claim broadly the making of valves in two or more parts, but,
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the two valves B, C, with each other and with the seat A, and the hinge a, a, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
WM. JEFFERS.
Witnesses:
Jos. T. GREENE, WM. H. JEFFERS.
