DRAFT-REGULATOR FOR LOCOMOTIVE AND OTHER FURNACES.
SPEGIFIGATIONforming part of Letters Patent No; 278,813, dated June 5, 1883. Application filed December 15, 1882. (X model.)
To all whom it may concern: l The injector F may be of any suitable or de- Be it known that I, HORACE \V. NORWOOD, sired construction; but I prefer to use that a citizen of the United States, residing atPhila-. class of injectors having a rotating cut-off delphia, in the county of Philadelphia and sleeve or nozzle, 1, provided with an open end State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain for the admission of the air designed to be 55 new and useful Improvementsin Draft-Beguforced into the furnace. To said nozzle is atlators for Locomotive and other Furnaces, of tached a projecting finger, L, which is conwhich the following is a specification, reference nected by a link, m, to a bell-crank lever, M, being had therein to the accompanying draw pivoted to the engine at m. The endm of 1 ings,,whereinlever M stands in front of the furnacedoor c, 60 Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of or its latch c, as plainly shown in Fig. 2.
alocomotive-boiler, fire-box, furnace, &c with Hence whenever said door is opened it strikes my improvements illustrated as applied theresaid lever and moves it in the direction indil to; and Fig. 2 is a detail elevation.
cated by arrow as, Fig. 1. As the lever M 1 5 My invention has relation to that class of fur-' moves the link m is depressed and the nozzle 6 naces wherein the draft is produced by injector sleeve I rotated to out of the steam to the inga blast of air or air and steam into the ashinjector, whereupon the injector stops workbox; and it has for its object to provide a draft in and no air or steam is forced into the ash which is nninfluenced by the escape of exhaust- 2 steam, and to avoid back-draft or escape of the box when the furnacedoor is opened. Consequently there is no back-draft or emission of 70 products of combustion through the furnacesparks therethrough at such time. 'When the door when opened. said door is closed the engineer or attendant My invention accordinglyconsists of the moves the lever M to its normal position, there novel combination and arrangement of parts, by reversely rotating nozzle I to start the in- 2 5 as hereinafter described, having particular ref jector. \Vhen firing up, or when the furnace- 7 5 erence to the provision of mechanism interdoor is opened, the natural draft through the posed between the injector and the furnacefines and smoke-stack is sufficient to get up. door, whereby when the latter is opened the steam or keep up its pressure. Hence it will steam-supplyto the injectoris cut off, and backbe seen from the foregoing that the furnaceo draft or the emission of the products of comdraft is maintained or produced by the injec- 8c bustion through said opened door is avoided. tion of air or air and steam into the ash-box Referring to the accompanying drawings, A or furnace, that such injection is stopped whenrepresents a locomotive-boiler; B, the stack; ever the furnace-doors are opened, and that C, the furnace or fire-box; D, the ash-pan; c, the escape of the exhaust-steam does not affect 5 the furnace-door; E, the exit-opening for the the draft and the back-pressure of steam in the 8 exhaust ports; F, the injector, and f a pipe or cylinders is reduced to minimum. Theinjecconnection between the boiler and inject or for tion of air into the furnace being stopped whensupplying steam to the latter. ever the furnace-door is opened, backdraft or To the opening E is secured a pipe, G, which the emission of the products of combustion 40 runs up to near the top of the stack, as shown, therethrough is avoided. Such result is obc and has a bore throughout its entire length of tained without using a blast of steam or air an area or diameter equal to or exceeding that in the stack, as has heretofore been done. I of the opening E. The exhaust-steam from the thus effect a saving in the consumption of steam. cylinders therefore passes freely through said I have shown and described mechanism inopening and pipe, and undue back-pressure in terposed between the furnace-door and the inl the cylinders is avoided. The exhaust escapjector F; but I do not wish to be understood ing from the pipe G at a point near the top of as confining my invention to the particular con the stack does not pulsate or influence the furstruction shown, as it may be varied to adapt nace-draft, consequently there is no emission my invention to different styles of locomotiveof sparks from the furnace. furnaces. So,'too, if desired, the end of lever M, may be connected to the furnace-door by any suitable means.
I have described my im novements as applied to loeomotive-iurnaees; but it is evident that they may be used in connection with furnaces of all kinds. In some cases it will not be necessary to employ the pipe' G, which is designed to be mainly used upon locomotives or in other places where the exhaust-steam is permitted to escape into a stack. Again, I have shown and described a particular form of air-injector, because I prefer to use the same; but any other injector or forcing apparatus may be substituted therefor, if desired, and when used the lever M will connect with its cutoff valve in a manner substantiallyas described for the nozzle I.
Vhat I claim is 1. In producing a draft for furnaces by injecting a blast of air or air and steam into the ash -box thereof, the method of preventing back-draft or the emission of the products of combustion through the opened furnace-doors,
2, A furnace provided with injecting appliances for supplying air or air and steam to its ash-box, in combination with mechanism, substantially as shown and described, which is in terposed between the furnace-door and the cutoff of the injecting appliances, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of furnace C, boiler A, ash-box D, provided with injector F, connec- 1 tion f, door 0, and mechanisminterposed between said door and injector, as and for the purpose set forth.
