such as for example, cigarette cases, compacts, change purses, etc., which should be available when needed without difficulty. Accordingly, the instant invention contemplates the provision of means whereby such cigarette cases, compacts, change purses, or the like broadly referred to as cases hereinare readily accessible from the outside of the handbag and without the necessity of opening the mouth portion of the latter.

As such, the invention resides in the provision of a combined handbag and case, the case being mounted in the mouth portion of the bag and including a cover which may be opened to the outside of the handbag quite independently of the opening of the bag itself.

An important feature of the invention resides in removably mounting the case in the mouth portion of the handbag, so that it may be quickly and easily removed therefrom, if so desired.

Another important feature of the invention resides in the arrangement of the case in the mouth portion of the handbag so that the case is entirely unobtrusive and does not in any way interfere with the conventional arrangement, opening and closing of the bag.

Some of the advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its convenient and expeditious use, and in its adaptability for embodiment in conventional handbags of various sizes and types.

With the foregoing more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention resides in the arrangement of parts and details of construction substantially as shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts and wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined handbag and case, in accordance with the invention;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 22 in Figure 1 and showing the case in plan;

Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 33 in Figure 2; and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary group perspective view of the case and one of the frame members of the handbag, illustrating the connecting means therebetween.

Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the handbag and case are designated generally by the reference numeral 10, the bag itself being shown at 11 and the case itself being shown at 12.

The handbag 11 includes the usual openable mouth portion 11a which is provided with the customary supporting frame comprising a pair of frame members 13,

.14 which are pivoted together as indicated at 15, to

facilitate opening and closing of the mouth portion of the bag.

If desired, the handbag may be equipped with a suitable carrying handle (not shown) and with keeper means for retaining the frame members 13, 14 in a closed position, in accordance with conventional practice, such keeper means also not being illustrated since they are well known in the art and form no part of the instant invention.

The frame members 13, 14 are preferably of a U-shaped cross-sectional configuration, and while the frame member 13 is of a conventional form, the frame member 14 is provided with a substantially U-shaped intermediate portion 14a which affords therein a recess for the reception of the case 12. As such, this recess is open at the top, inside and outside thereof, but has closed ends 16 and a closed bottom 17.

A pair of U-shaped channels 18 are suitably secured to the frame member 14 at the closed ends 16 of the recess in the portion 14a, the lower ends of these channels being in abutment with the closed bottom 17 of the recess while the upper ends of the channels are open.

The aforementioned case 12, which may be a cigarette case, a change purse, a compact, or the like, is conventional in construction and includes a pair of complemental half- sections 19, 20 which are connected together by a suitable hinge 21, the section 20 assuming the form of an openable cover for the section 19, as will be clearly apparent.

A pair of elongated rails 22 are secured to the ends of the case section 19, or may be formed integrally therewith, as desired. In any event, when the case 12 is to be applied to the handbag 11, the rails 22 are simply slid downwardly through the open top of the recess in the frame member 14 and into the channels 18, whereby the case is removably retained in position. It is to be noted, however, that the engagement of the rails 22 with the channels 18 serves to retain only the case section 19, while the cover section 20 of the case may be opened outwardly through the open outer side of the recess, as indicated by the dotted lines 20a in Figure 3, whereby access may be had to the interior of the case independently of opening the mouth portion of the handbag itself.

The case 12 may be provided with a suitable catch 23 to retain the sections 19, 20 thereof in a closed position, and it will be also noted that when the case is in place, the bottom of the case abuts the closed bottom 17 of the recess in which the case is disposed.

In the accompanying drawing the channels 18 have been shown as separate from but secured to the frame member 14. However, they may be formed integrally therewith, if so preferred.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that the case 12 is held in the recess of the frame member 14 quite unobtrusively and the interior thereof is readily available without opening the handbag. Moreover, by virtue of the channels 18 and rails 22, the case may be readily removed from the handbag and substituted by another case of a similar nature.
