GLOBE-HOLDER FOR LAMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. LITLE, J r., a resident of Woodbury, Gloucester county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Globe-Holder for Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away, showinga lamp having my improved globe holder applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail view of a portion of the lamp casing and globe holder showingthe locking device for the holder; Fig. 3 1s a detail sectional view showing the manner of securing the globe and also the packing between the globe holder and lamp casing; Fig. 1 is a side view of a portion of the lamp with the globe holder swun backwardly and upwardly and held in its locked position; and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the locking device for holding the globe holder and globe in this position.
My invention has relation to lobe holders for lamps, and more particular y to holders for gas lamps of the inverted type, in which the globe is below the body of the lamp.
One object of my invention is to provide means for taking up lost motion or play at the joint between the globe-holding ring and the lower portion of thelamp body, this not only substantially preventing entrance of air at this joint, which would interfere with the proper air supply to the burners, but also avoiding looseness and consequent rattling.
A further object of the invention is to provide a globe holder so constructed and arranged that after the globe has been for cleaning, but the combined ring and globe can be easily detached at the hinge connection and taken away for cleaning.
My invention is also designed to provide means whereby the globe holder and globe can be swung backwardly and upwardly away from the mantles and held in position to permit adjustment or changing of the mantles, or dusting of the globe; and to provide a gasket between the globe holder and easing.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the casin of the lamp, which may be of any desirab e form, and 15 shown as having a flared and enlarged lower portion 3. The lower part of this enlarged portion of the casing is provided with a plurality of perforations 4, which are of such a number and size as to permit the entrance of the proper amount of air to the globe.
5 designates the chimney of the lamp, which is extended downwardly within the globe 6, and 7 designates the mantles of the burners.
8 is the lobe-holding ring, whose upper edge exten s upwardly within the downwardly flared beaded lower edge of the lower casing part 3, and which is provided with means, such as the usual screws 9, for securing the globe to the ring. The ring 8 is connected to one side of the casin by a hinge, shown as formed with hinged l ugs 12, on the ring, and the hinge plate 13, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the casing. The hinge plate is provided with an oblique open slot 14, to receive the hinge pin 15, and the globe holder and globe may be swung upwardly and rearwardly into the position shown in Fig. 4, to give access to the mantles for cleaning, etc. To secure them in this position, I provide the latch 16, which is pivoted to the hinged lugs 12, and has a projection 17 adapted to engage a shoulder 18, of the hinge plate. Above the shoulder 18, the hinge plate is provided with a guard finger or horn 19, which overhangs the shoulder and will prevent the hinge pin from being accidentally thrown out of the slot when the globe is swung up.
To hold the globe and globe holder in normal position, I use a latch plate 20, secured to the rin 8, at the opposite side from the hinge, this atch plate having a slot 21 arranged to fit over a hooked recessed lug 22, secured to the lower part of the lamp casing. To lock this connection, I provide a cam member 23, which is pivoted to the upper end of the latchplate 20, and has a cam shaped lower edge 24, bearing against the bottom of the recess in the lug 22. When this cam is swung home, it not only looks the latch connection, but also draws the ring upwardly toward the casing, thus Patented May 23, 1911.
substantially preventing entrance of air at this point, and avoiding looseness and consequent rattling at the joint. To further insure these results, I may also use a gasket or packing ring 10, between the flange 11 of the casing portion 3 and the upper edge of the globe ring 8. Where this is used, the ring is drawn up against it by the cam action, thus insuring the prevention of rattling and also avoiding entrance of air.
The advantages of my invention will be obvious to those skilled in the art. The cam device draws the globe holder upwardly against the casing or the gasket, where this is used, thus substantially preventing the en; trance of air at this joint, and avoiding rattling. These surfaces are usually more or less rough, and any air entering at this level would reduce the efliciency of the lamp, since the proper amount of air is supplied to it by proportioning the areas of the air inlet holes 4. Where the gasket is used, this further insures these desirable results. The globe need not be removed from the holder for cleaning, since the holding ring may be easily detached by moving the hinge pin out of the hinge slot. Provision is made for readily swinging the globe holder back and upward, and retaining it in this position to give access to the mantles.
The device for drawing the globe holder toward the casing may be varied, the gasket may or may not be used, the form of the hinge may be changed, and many other variations may be made, without departing from my invention.
I claim:
1. Thecombination with a lamp, of a globe-holding ring pivoted to the lower portion of the lamp casing, an arm carried by said ring and having an opening therein, a catch lug on the casing adapted to pass through said opening, and a cam device arranged to engage said lug to draw the holding ring upwardlyto the casing and at the same time having locking engagement with said lug; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a lamp, of a globe-holding ring pivoted to the lower portion of the lamp casing, a gasket or packing between the ring and the adjacent portion of the casing, said ring having an upwardly projecting slotted arm, and the casing having a lug adapted to engage the slot of the arm, and a cam member pivoted to said arm and arranged to draw the holding ring upwardly against the packing and at the same time secure the arm on said lug; substantially as described. 3. In a lamp, a casing, and a globe-holding ring hinged thereto at one side, the hinged connection having its pin or pintle A seated in an oblique open slot having an overhanging upper wall arranged to prevent the pin from being disengaged from the slot when the ring is thrown back; substantially as described. 4. In a lamp, a casing, a globe-holding ring having a laterally projecting hinge lug, the casing having a depending hinge member, said hinge member having an oblique open slot, and a .hinge pin or pintle passing through the hingelug and seated in said slot and an overhanging lug,..arranged to prevent the pin from being disengaged from the slot when the" ring is thrown back; substantially as described.
5. In a lamp, a casing, a globe-holding ring hinged thereto, a latch member. pivoted to the ring, the casing having a catch to receive said latch member when the globe is swung backwardly and upwardly and a stop for said latch; substantially as described.
6. In a lamp,a casing, a globe-holding ring hinged thereto, the hinge connection having its pin or pintle seated in an open slot, and means for guarding the entrance to the slot to prevent accidental unseating of the pin, substantially as described.
7 The combination with a lamp, of a globe-holding ring having a hinge connection with the lamp casing and upon which the ring and globe may be swung backwardly and upwardly, and a pivoted locking device adapted to'automatically catch and hold the said ring'the pivot pin of said locking device being at right angles to the hinge connection between the ring and the lamp casing, substantially as described.
8. The combination with a lamp, of a globe-holding ring having a hinge connection with the lamp casing and upon which the ring and globe may be swung backwardlyand upwardly, a latch member carriedby said ring, and means on the casing adapted to be automatically engaged by the latch member to hold the globe and ring in their upwardand backward positions and an overhanging up per wall arranged to prevent the pin from being disengaged from the slot when the ring is thrown back, substantially as described.
9. The combination with a lamp, of a globe-holding ring rigidly connected to the lamp casing, the pin of the hinge connection being removably seated in an open slot, a locking device carried by the ring and arranged to hold the ring and globe in open position, and guard means on the casing for preventing the pin from being thrown out of said slot, substantially as described.
10. In a lamp, a casing, a globe-holding ring hinged thereto, a cooperating catch and latch operated by the swinging of the globe backwardly and upwardly to automatically engage each other and thereby hold said globe in its upward and backward position back beyond a predetermined point; sub- 10 and a stop for said latch; substantially as stantially as described. described.
