6 Claims. (Cl. 155-- 182) This invention relates to cushion covers, and more particularly to a cushion cover which is adapted to cover various sized cushions of T shape configuration, such as are employed in chairs, davenports and the like.

A primary object of my invention is to provide a cover for cushions of T shaped configuration which is readily adjustable to accommodate cushions of this type which are of widley varying dimensions and shapes.

Another object of my invention is to provide a universal type of cushion cover for cushions of T shape configuration which is easily applied to the cushion without distortion of the cushion and which presents a smooth and custom made appearance.

These, and other objects, are achieved in a, cushion cover which is assembled from a relatively small number of panels. The cushion cover is made up from a top and a bottom panel which areidentical in shape and therefore may be simultaneously cut in a single operation. The top and bottom panels are shaped in the form of a T and have their rear corners constructed to form pockets which in use are adapted to receive the rear portion of the cushion. Around the periphery of the T projections, side panels are secured to form pockets which receive the T projections of the cushion. The top and bottom panels are joined along the front edge pore tions between the side panels by a band which is extended at each end a sufiicient amount to be wrapped around, all of the side surfaces of the T projections of the cushion and thus conceal the free edges between the side panels on the top and bottom panels. On one side of the cushion, immediately to the rear of the side panels, the top and bottom panels are joined together by a triangular shaped panel which is permanently secured to both the top and bottom panels. At the opposite side of the cushion, two separable panels extend rearwardly of the side panels and have snap fasteners suitably disposed to provide releasable fastening means between the top and bottom panels on this side of the cushion.

The side panels which receive the T projections of the cushion are provided with contractile elements along their free edges whereby the pocket formed by the side panel and T projection of the top or bottom panel are expansible and may be secured in position upon the cushion. The pockets formed at the rear of the cushion cover may be held in position upon the 'cover by means of a draw string, the ends of which are accessible adjacent the separable panels which join the top and bottom panels.

Other objects and advantages of my adjustable T cushion coverwill become readily apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view, showing the initial step of installing the cushion cover, for which the cushion is disposed with its bottom surface uppermost;

Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a subsequent step in the installation;

Referring first to Fig. 7, it will be seen that the cushion cover includes a top panel 2and a bottom panel 4 of substantially identical shape. At their rearward corners, top panel 2 and bottom panel 4, have rectangular cutout portions, the edges of which are joined as at 6 to form a pocket indicated generally by the dotted lines 8. The actual constructionof these pockets may be clearly understood byreference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. At their forward portions, top panel 2 and bottom panel 4 have extensions 10 which are so shaped as to overlie the T projections of the cushion. Secured along the periphery of extensions, 10 are -rectangularly shaped side panels12 which cooperate with extensions 10 to form pockets for the reception ofjthe T projections of the cushion. The outer or unsecured edge of side panels 10 is provided with a contractile-element in the form of an elastic tape 14 whereby the pockets formed by extension 10 and side panels 12 areexpansible and may be firmly held in position upon the cushion.

Top panel 2'and bottom panel 4 are joined together by a band 18, the central portion 180 of which is secured to the respective forward edges of the topand bottom panels between the innermost ends 16 of side panels 12. The endportions 18a and 18b of band 18 extend from the secured central portion 18c to form tape-like elements or extensions adapted to be extended around all sides of the T projection of the cushion in the manner shown in Figs.- 4 and 5.

Top panel 2 and bottom panel 4 are also permanently joined to each other at one s ide immediately to the rear of side panels 12 by a triangularly shaped panel 20. The base edge 22 of triangular panel 20 is secured to the rearward edges of side panels 12 on this side of the cushion while the remaining edges 24 and 26 are respectively secured to top panel 2 and bottom panel 4. As shown in Fig. 7, the edge 26 would be secured to bottom panel" 4 along the portion 28, while the free portion of edge 22 in Fig. 7 would be secured to the edge 30 of side panel 12, adjacent portion 28.

At the opposite side of the cushion cover, the side panels 12 are extended by three sided joining panels 32. The panels 32 are provided, along their free edge, with separable fastening means '34 for joining top panel 2 to bottom panel 4 in this region. A utilization of a separable fastening means on one side of the cushion cover in the manner described above facilitates the application of the cover to the cushion by allowing the insertion of the cushion from one side of the cover. In the disclosed embodiment, the joining panels 32 are cut separately from side panels 12 in order to allow for more efiicient 'use of scrap material; However, the joining panel 32 and side panel 12 may, if desired, be cut as a unit.

The method by which my adjustable T cushioncover is applied to a cushion is extremely simple and, due to the construction employed, the applied cover presents an extremely neat and custom made appearance. The cover is applied in the following manner.

In order to present a smooth finished appearance, the initial steps of the installation are performed with the cushion in an upside down position in order that the pocket at the rear of top panel 2 will overlie the pocket on bottom panel 4. The cushion is shown in Fig. 1 after it has been inserted into the cover from the open side; that is, the side which is provided with separable fasteners 34. Fasteners 34 are concealed from view in Fig. 1 and are on the left-hand side of the cushion, below the arrow A. After the cushion has been inserted into the cover, 'as shown in Fig. 1, the pocket at the rear of bottom panel 4 is fitted over the rear portion of the cushion rather loosely and the expansible pockets formed by extensions and side panel 12 are put into place upon the T projections of cushion C in the manner shown in Fig. 2; After both of the cushion projections have been covered, the pocket at the rear of bottom panel 4 isdrawn into position and the cushion is inverted as shown in Fig. 3. The pocket at the rear of top panel 2 is then moved into place and overlies the pocket at the rear of bottom panel 4. After the pockets at the rear of the top and bottom panels have been placed in position, draw strings 36 are tightened and tied and fasteners 34 are secured to each other.

The tape-like exetnsions of band 18 are then stretched and brought around the sides of the T projections of cushion C in the manner shown in Fig. 4 and are secured in the position shown in Fig. 5 by any suitable means such as upholstery pins (not shown).

Because of the pocket-like arrangement, cushions of widely differing sizes and shapes may be neatly and snugly covered by my cushion cover. In the case of cushions of smaller sizes, the pockets at the rear portion of the cushion may overlap the cushion sides by a fairly large amount, as shown in the cross sectional view of Fig. 6. Similarly, the expansible pockets which receive the T projections may be expanded to cover the sides of the cushion in this region to a greater or lesser degree. This forward edges of said top and bottom panels to overlie and conceal the edges of the pockets on said top and bottom panel extensions, and means for maintaining all of said pockets in position upon the respective surfaces of said cushion.

3. A universal cover for cushions of T shaped configuration comprising top and bottom panels each having a pocket at its rearward portionadapted to overlie the rear side surface of a cushion with the pocket of said top panel overlying the pocket of said bottom panel, means for securing said pockets in the aforementioned relationship, said panels including extensions at each side of the forward portion of each panel forming pockets adapted to overlie at least a portion of the side surfaces of the T projections of said cushion, resilient means for securing said last mentioned pockets in position upon said last mentioned side surfaces, and a band joining said top and bottom panels along a central portion of their forward edges, said band extending around the side surfaces of said T projections to conceal the edges of said last mentioned pockets.

4. A universal cover for cushions of T shaped configuration comprising top and bottom panels, each of said panels being constructed at its rearward corners to form a pocket adapted to overlie the rear side surface of a cushion, said panels including side extensions at the forward portions of each of said panels adapted to overlie the T projections of said cushion, side panels secured to the periphery of each of said side extensions and cooperating therewith to form pockets for the reception of said T projections, a band joining said top and bottom panels along the forward edge thereof between said side panels,

said band being extended from each side of the portion is a highly desirable feature, since the width of the cushion 4 across the front of the T is more susceptible to variation between cushions than the other dimensions. 7 7

While I have disclosed a specific embodiment of my invention, it will be readily apparent that this embodiment is capable of modifications. Therefore, I wish it to be understood that the foregoing description is exemplary rather than limiting and that the true scope of my invention is that described in the following claims. As em ployed in the following claims, the term universal cover is to be construed as referring to a cover which is adaptable to cushions having different sizes and proportions.

' I claim:

1. A universal cover for cushions of T shaped conwhich is joined to said top and bottom panels a sufiicient amount to extend around all sides of the T projections and overlie the edges of said side panels.

A universal cover for cushions of T shaped configuration comprising top and bottom panels, each of said panels being constructed at its rearward corners to form a pocket adapted to overlie the. rear side surface of a cushion, means for securing said pockets in position upon said cushion, said panels including extensions at each side of the forward portion of each of said panels adapted to overlie the T projections of said cushion, rectangular side panels secured along one longitudinal edge to the periphery of said extensions to form pockets for reception of said T projections of said cushion, resilient means in the 7 extended at each side beyond the portion which is secured figuration comprising top and bottom panels each having extensions projecting outwardly from each side edge of the forward portions thereof, side panels secured around the periphery of said extensions to form expansible pockets for the reception of portions of the T projections of the cushion, means joining the forward edges of said top and bottom panels to each other, and tape-like elements extending laterally. from the joined portions of said top and bottom panels to overlie and conceal the edges of said pockets.

A universal cover for cushions of -T shaped configuration comprising top and bottom panels each having a pocket at its rearward portion adapted to overlie the rear portions of a cushion, said panels including extensions at each side of the forward portion of each panel forming pockets adapted to overlie at least a portion of the surfaces of the T projections of said cushion, a band.

joining said top and bottom panels along a portionof their forward edges, said band'being extended beyond the to said top and bottom panels a sufiicient amount to extend around all sides of said T projections to conceal said resilient means, and means for joining said top and bottom panels rearwardly of said side extensions.

6. A universal cover for cushions of T shaped configuration comprising a top panel having extensions projecting outwardly from each side of the forward portion thereof adapted to overlie the upper surfaces of the T projections of the cushion, side panels secured around the periphery of each of said extensions to define a pocket at each side of the forward portion of said top panel, a bottom panel having extensions projecting outwardly from each side of the forward portion thereof adapted to underlie the lower surfaces of the T projections of said cushion, side panels secured around the periphery of said last mentioned extensions to define a pocket at each side of the forward portion of said bottom panel, means joining the forward edges of said top and bottom panels to each other between said side panels, and a tape-like extension extending laterally from the forward edges of said tions of both pockets associated with the respective T projection.
