3 Claims. (1. 2-116) The present invention relates to an improved article of apparel and it relates more particularly to an improved outergarment such as a shirt or blouse used for sport or dress wear by men, women and children.

While shirts and blouses of conventional construction which may be alternatively employed for dress wear or sports wear are readily available such shirts are of very limited versatility. The collars of these shirts may be worn in either of two positions, a closed position, defining dress wear and! an open position defining sport. In actuality, however, the dress wear position of the collar and the sports wear position are compromises and the garment does not present an attractive appearance either when worn as a sports shirt or as a dress shirt. More over, an open collar and a closed collar are the only choices available. Another type of shirt in common use is of the slip-over variety in which a yoke portion having a neck opening extends from the back panel of the shirt and is :detachably secured along its front edges to the front panel of the shirt. The collar is attached to the yoke portion. This shirt may be worn with the wings of the collar tucked under the front panel or over the front panel and the yoke may be worn either separated or attached from the front panel. While this type of shirt is somewhat more flexible than the conventional combination dress and sport shirt it still leaves much to be desired as to appearance and versatility.

It is thus a principal object of the present invention to provide an improved article of apparel.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved outergarment for wear by men, women and children.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved shirt type outergarment capable of being employed in sports and dress wear.

A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved shirt type outergarment of the slip-over variety.

Still a further object of the present invention is to provide an improved shirt type outergarment which may be worn in a plurality of alternative positions.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved shirt type outergarment which maybe worn in a plurality of alternative collar and yoke positions and arrangements.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved outergarment in which alternate selected collar and yoke arrangements may be simply achieved.

A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved outergarment of simple and rugged con struction which permits the wearing thereof in a plurality of selected arrangements of collar and yoke.

The above and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from a reading of the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein Figure l is a fragmentary front perspective view of a garment embodying the present invention illustrated as worn in a yoke closed, collar wing open position.

The present invention broadly contemplates the provision of an improved article of apparel comprising a front panel, a rear panel, a yoke member secured to said rear panel and extending forwardly to a front border adapted to assume a position adjacent said front panel, fastening means associated with said yoke member front border and the upper portion of said front panel to permit the separable fastening of said front border and said front panel along preselected points, a collar member secured to said yoke member and provided with depending wings, said wings having means adjacent their corners permitting the separable fastening thereof at pre-selected points along said front panel.

In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention the improved garment is a shirt of the slip-over type including a front panel and a rear panel and a yoke portion formed integrally with said rear panel and projecting forwardly over the shoulders and stitched only along its outer front edges to the upper edge of the front panel. The sides of the upper rear and front panels and the yoke member are recessed to define arm holes to which are stitched registering sleeves, the contiguous side edges of the front and rear panels being sewn together from the bottoms up to the arm hole. A collar section is provided including a collar member having a neck band portion and a pair of inwardly directed depending flaps secured to the front inner face of the yoke to form a lining therefor. The collar member is provided with an under ply and the neck band lower edge is connected to the edge of the neck recess formed in the yoke. Formed along the front free edge or" t e yoke are button holes which are adapted to engage correspondingly spaced buttons secured to the upper outer face of the front panel. Moreover, the corners of the collar wings are likewise provided with button holes adapted to engage the aforesaid buttons which may be previously engaged by the yoke button holes.

Reference is now made to the drawings and more particularly to Figures 8 to 12 thereof which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the present invention, as applied to a slip-over type shirt wherein the numeral it generally designates the front panel of the improved garment and the numeral 12 the rear panel thereof the panels ill and 12 being provided at their upper corners with cooperating arm hole recesses i l. The front and rear panels 10 and 12 respectively are stitched together along their contiguous vertical side edges and the upper edge 16 is finished by being folded rearwardly and stitched to form a hem. Formed integrally with the shirt rear panel 12 is a yoke section 18 having a forwardly directed U-shaped neck opening 20 formed therein, the yoke section 18 having a pair of integrally formed forwardly directed flaps 22 extending from the shoulder of the yoke section 18 over the upper border of the front panel 19 and on either side of the neck opening 20. A collar section 24 is provided with a collar 26 including a neck band 23 and a collar portion 30 connected along a common fold line, and is also provided with a pair of flaps 32 depending from the side lower edges of the collar 28 and being of somewhat arcuate configuration and projecting inwardly as illustrated, the outer edges 34 of the liaps 32 corre sponding to the lower and inner front edges 36 and 38 respectively of the flaps 22. The collar 26 is provided with a suitable lining 49, and a layer of buckram or the like is sandwiched between the plies of the collar 26 and along the inner face of the flaps 32. The collar neck band 28 is reinforced by suitable lines of stitches 42.

In the assembled garment the outer edges 3 of the flaps 32 and the forward edges 36 and 38 of the flaps 22 are suitably hemmed and stitched together from their corresponding outer corners to the base of the collar 26 and the corners of the neck opening 20 respectively. The base edges of the plies of the neck band 28 are stitched to either side of the edge of the neck opening 20 along a line disposed between the upper inner corners 44 of the flaps 32. The end edges 46 of the flap 34 coincide with the side edges of 48 of the flaps 22 and the upper edges of the arm recesses of the front section 10 to complete the arm hole opening. Furthermore, a line of stitching 52 secures the outer lower edges of the flaps 22 to the upper portion of the front panel 10. A sleeve 54 of any desired construction registers with each of the arm holes and is stitched thereto to complete the assembly of the garment, the stitching securing the coinciding edges 46 of the flaps 34 and the side edges 43 of the flaps 22.

A pair of horizontally spaced buttons 56 and 58 are attached to each side of the front panel ill immediately above the lower edge 36 of the flap 22 and between the inner terminus of the line of stitches 52 and a point adjacent to the lower corner of the flap 22. A pair of closely horizontally spaced third buttons 60 are located directly below the upper edge of the front panel 10 and symmetrical to the vertical medial axis thereof, and spaced inwardly relative to the buttons 58. Corresponding button holes 57, 59, and 61 are formed in and along the edges of the flaps 22 and are spaced in accordance with arrangement of the buttons 56, 58 and 60 so that when all the buttons are engaged by the respective button holes as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing the flaps 22 will be separably fastened to the front panel 10 in a flat unruffied condition, the collar being substantially closed at the neck portion. Moreover, button holes 63 are formed in the lower corners of the wings or tabs of the collar 30.

Several manners and arrangements in which the improvided garment may be worn is illustrated in Figures 1 to 7 of the drawings. In Figure 1 the yoke flaps 22 are completely buttoned down whereas the wings or tabs of the collar 30 are free. In Figure 2 the yoke flap-s are likewise completely closed and the collar flaps are buttoned down by engaging the buttons 58. In Figure 3 the shirt is worn in a partially open condition only the buttons 56 and 58 being engaged by the corresponding flap button holes 57 and 59, the flap button hole 61 being free as are the collar tabs. In Figure 4 the yoke flaps are in the same position as in Figure 3 but the collar is buttoned down, the collar button holes engaging the buttons 56. In Figure 5 the collar is further opened by disengaging the button holes 58 only the button holes 57 being engaged by the buttons 56 whereas in Figures 6 and 7 the collar is in the fully opened position, none of the flap button holes being engaged.

The improved. garment may be-rnade of any suitable webbing suchas woven or knitted fabrics ofany desired appearance. Moreover, although the invention has been illustrated as applied to a mans slip-over shirt it may be equally applied to any other type of garment for men, women and children such as dresses, blouses and the like. Furthermore, the manner of wearing the garment may be considerably varied.

While there has been illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the present invention it is apparent that numerous alterations and omissions may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.

I claim:

l. An improved article of apparel comprising a front panel, a rear panel, a yoke member secured to said rear panel and having a forwardly directed U-shaped, wide neck opening formed therein dividing said yoke member into a pair of forwardly directed flaps substantially overlying said front panel, a collar integral with said yoke member having an open front neck band secured to the edge of said neck opening, a plurality of pairs of laterally spaced apart symmetrically arranged buttons afiixed along the upper portion of said front panel, said forwardly directed flaps having laterally spaced apart button holes formed therein at points along its edge corresponding to the spacing of said respective buttons and adapted to engage said respective buttons whereby to close said neck opening except at the center thereof, and said collar being provided with depending wings having a button hole formed in each of the corners thereof adapted to selectively engage said laterally spaced apart buttons.

An improved article of apparel in accordance with claim 1, wherein said neck band has a button hole formed adjacent each of its front edges, and including a pair of laterally closed spaced buttons centrally medially located along the upper edge of said front panel and adapted to engage said corresponding neck band button holes whereby further to close said neck opening.

3. An improved article of apparel comprising a front panel having arm hole recesses formed therein, a rear panel superimposed upon said front panel and having arm hole recesses formed therein, said panels having vertical contiguous side edges below said recesses sewn to each other, said rear panel carrying an integrally formed forwardly and over-the-shoulder-extending yoke member having a forwardly directed U-shaped neck recess formed therein dividing said yoke member into a pair of forwardly directed flaps having front borders and inner and outer side edges, said front border overlying and extending substantially below the upper edge of said front panel, a collar portion having an open front neck band secured to the rear edge of said neck recess, a ply defining the front face of said collar portion and superimposed thereon and having depending flaps underlying said yoke flaps and secured to the forward and inner side edges thereof, and a plurality of pairs of symmetrically arranged buttons located along the upper portion of said panel under the inner face of said yoke flaps, said yoke flaps having button holes formed along the edge thereof and arranged in accordance with the spacing of and adapted to selectively engage said buttons, and said collar being provided with Wing portions having button holes formed in the corners thereof and adapted to selectively engage said buttons.
