BAG-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,772, dated May 15, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY W. NELsoN, of 0rd, in the county of Valley and State of N ebraska, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

'The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for holding a bag raised and open while the same is being filled.

The invention consists in a bag holder formed of two curved arms provided with hooks, which arms are attached to toothed disks resting against another toothed disk on the upper end of a rod which is supported by a forked brace, which is driven into the ground or into some post or wall. The several toothed disks are pressed against each other by means of a screw passing through them or by other suitable devices, whereby the curved arms can be adjusted to hold bags of any desired size.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bag-holder, showing the manner of holding a bag open and raised. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved bagholder, showing a modification in the construction, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the toothed locking-plate.

Two curved arms, A A, are provided with a series of outwardly and upwardly projecting hooks, A, which can be pressed through the upper edge of a bag, 0, for holding the same open and raised. Each curved arm A is at- I tached to a disk, B, of which one has its up per surface toothed or'serrated radially and the other has its lower surface toothed or serrated radially. The disks B B rest, respectively, on the upper and lower surfaces of a radially-toothed disk, 0, (shown in Fig. 3,) which the disks B on the disk 0. -A pin or spike, G, is driven through the bottom eye, E, of the rod D into the ground. The rod D is supported by a fork, I, to which are pivoted two bracebars, H. The rod D passes between the shanks of the fork, which shanks can be pressed against the said rod D by means of a screw, J, passing through the ends of the shanks of the fork. The bag 0 can then be suspended from the curved arms A, and can be filled conveniently. If desired, the pin or spike G, which is passed through the bottom eye, E, of the rod D and driven into the grouud,-can be replaced by a thumb wood-screw, G, which can be screwed into the wall or a post, K, as shown in Fig. 2, the upper end of the rod D being supported by the brace-rods H, which are provided at the ends with eyes, through which wood thumb-screws H are passed into the wall; or the ends of the braces H can be bent downward, as shown in dotted lines, and driven into the-wall. In both cases the bracerods will be inclined downward, and the rod D will be held between the shanks of the fork, which shanks are pressed against the rod by the screw J. The bag 0 can then be suspended from the curved arm A, as described above. If desired, the rod D can be passed through two loops or eyes fastened to the post or wall K, in which eyes or loops the rod D can turn, thus permitting the bag-holding arms to be swung toward or from the post or wall K A bag can thus be held opened and raised while the same is being filled, and the device can be adjusted very easily for bags of various sizes and difl'erent heights. For attachment to a post, the braceH may be made in one piece instead of being forked.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a bag-holder, the combination, with a supporting-rod provided with a disk on its upper end, and means for supporting the same, of curved arms provided with hooks, and each having a disk on its inner end, and means for clamping the disks of the arms on the upper and lower surfaces of the disk of the supporting-rod, substantially as herein shown and described.

In a bag-holder, the combination, with the arms A, having toothed disks B, of the rod D, having toothed disk 0, devices for pressing the disks B on the toothed disk 0, and braces H, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. 5 3.'In a bag-holder, the combination, with the arms A, having toothed disks B, of the rod D, having toothed disk 0, devices for pressing the disks B on the toothed disk 0, the fork I, and braces H, for supporting the 10 rod D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a bag-holder, the combination, with the arms A, provided with hooks A, and the toothed disks B, of the rod D, having toothed 15 disk 0, the braces H, fork I, and the screw F,
