1 claim. (ci. 259-7) The present invention relates in general to pumps and, more particularly, to a pump for intimately mixing two liquids, or other fluids.
The present invention finds particular utility in treaters for mixing fresh stock with the stock in the treaters, although the utility of the invention is not necessarily limited thereto.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a mixing pump which includes pumping means for propelling a first fluid through a flow channel in a pump housing, and which includes an apertured distributing passage spanning the flow channel for injecting a second fluid into the first fluid as it is propelled through the flow channel by the pumping means, the apertures in the distributing passage facing in the downstream direction with respect to the direction of flow through the flow channel.
AMore particularly, an object of the invention is to provide a mixing pump which includes a housing having an annular flow channel therethrough, which includes pumping means in the housing for propelling the first fluid through the annular channel, and which includes means forming a plurality of radial distributing passages spanning the annular channel, the passage-forming means having a plurality of downstream-facing apertures therein which communicate with the radial distributing passages and with the annular channel to inject the second fluid into the stream of first fluid propelled through the annular channel, thereby attaining intimate mixing of the two fluids, which is an important feature of the invention.
Another object of the invention is to provide a central supply passage in the pump housing which is encompassed by the 'annular channel and which communicates with the radial distributing passages to supply the second fluid thereto.
Another object is to provide a mixing pump wherein the radial distributing passages are formed by radial tubes spanning the annular channel, these tubes having apertures therein which face in the downstream direction to inject the second fluid into the stream of first fluid flowing through the annular channel.
Another object is to provide a mixing pump wherein the annular channel is bounded by inner and outer walls, the inner wall separating the central supply passage from the annular channel and having therein radial holes into which the radial distributing tubes are threaded.
Another object is to provide a mixing pump wherein the radial distributing tubes extend outwardly to the exterior of the housing through holes in the outer wall of the annular channel, sealing means being provided between such outer wall and the radial distributing tubes.
The foregoing objects, advantages and features of the 5 2,772,863 Patented Dec. 4, 1956 present invention, together with various other objects, advantages and features thereof which will become apparent, may be attained with the exemplary embodiment of the invention which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and which is described in detail hereinafter. Referring to the drawing;
Fig. l is a longitudinal sectional view of the Ymixing pump of the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the arrowedline 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a housing which provides an anular flow channel 11 bounded by inner and outer walls 12 and 13. The mixing pump of the invention includes a pumping means 14 for propelling a first fluid through the annular channel 11 in the direction of the arrow 15, the pumping means 14 including an impeller 16 mounted on a shaft 17 in suitable bearings in the housing 10. In the particular embodiment illustrated, the housing 10 is adapted to be inserted below the level of liquid stock in a treater, for example, to draw the liquid stock upwardly through the annular channel 11 in the direction indicated by the arrow 15, the liquid stock being discharged from the housing 10 through ports 19 therein.
The housing 10 provides an inner supply passage 21 for a second fluid, such as fresh liquid stock, to be injected into the annular stream of fluid flowing through the channel 11, the central supply passage Z1 communicating with an inlet 22 through which the second fluid is introduced. The inner wall 12 of the annular channel 11 separates this channel from the central supply passage 21 and is provided with a plurality of radial holes 23 therein into which are threaded the inner ends of radial distributing tubes 24. The latter are provided with down-stream-facing apertures 25 therein through which the second fluid from the central supply passage 21 is injected into the fluid stream flowing through the annular channel 11, injecting the second fluid into the fluid stream flowing through the channel 11 in this manner through a large number of apertures 25 producing intimate mixing of the two fluids, which is an important feature of the invention.
The distributing tubes 24 extend outwardly through the outer wall 13 vof the annular channel 11 through radial holes 27, gaskets 28 retained by lock nuts 29y preventing leakage.
For applications of the invention designed to handle: acidic liquids, the distributing tubes 24 are provided with drain apertures 31, the central supply passage 21 alsol being provided with one or more drain apertures 32. Thus, when the mixing pump is not in use, any liquids: therein may drain to prevent corrosion in the event that acidic liquids are being handled. t
Although we have disclosed an exemplary embodiment of our invention herein for purposes of illustration, it will be understood that various changes, modifications and substitutions may be incorporated in such embodiment without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claim hereinafter appearing.
We claim as our invention:
In a mixing pump, the combination of: a hollow generally cylindrical housing defining a flow channel for a fluid; a tubular supply conduit for a second fluid extending axially of said flow channel and having threaded radial openings in the side wall thereof; means xedly supporting said conduit in said housing; openings through ing with the interior of said conduit, said tubes extend` ing outwardly through said openings in said housing and having closed end portions outside said housing; sealing means between said tubes and the outside of said housing and means on siadr, tubes, outside said housing, retaining said sealing means in place; openings in the side walls of said 'tubes within said housing and facing axially of said ow vchannel in one direction; a shaft journalled in said tubular ltonduit and extending from an `end thereof insaid housing; and axial-110W pumping vmeans mounted on said shaft in said housing upstream of said tubes for pumping said fluid through said flow channel in said one-direetion- References Cited in the le of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Marshall Jan. 8, Hulst et al.
