Application flledDeceniher 6,1882. (No model.) r i To all when; it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. CLOSE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and countyof Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, which improvement is fully set forth inthe following specification in whichof the portion of a button embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a section of the complete device in line a m, Fig. 1. Fig. at is a section on line y y, Fig. 2. w v
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- My invention consists of a metallic; sheath of the formoi'ithejhead of a button, adapted to be fitted over and secured to the head of I unifor'mbutton is required the sheath is apm etallic or'uniform button is presented, the fastening for the sheathbeing concealed withand embracing the periphery of the button, the garment being adapted to be buttoned andunb'uttoned without necessarily re-; moving thevsheath. I v
Referring to the drawings, A represents a b'uttoniwhich may be cornposed of any desirable material, with or withouta covering of fabrimandmadeplain or ornamental, or, in
, 'B represeuts a metallic sheath, hollowand ton its diameter being greater than the head offthe'button A, so as te be easilyfittedover thelaf'tter and-conceal the same. v I To the-inner faceof thesheathB is secured hich is curved to, accord with the tudin'al direction, so asto receive the periphery spring, D, which is interer, coiled wire, or other orxconta-ined in the arm however, itj 'ifs-;desired ;to wear 'a'uniform-buttignous part ot' the periphery of the latter 611- ters the groove or depressiouot' the arm 0,
and by proper manipulation of the arm is moved back, or toward the rim a, so that the entire head of the button into the sheath. The arm 0, owing to its A may be pressed spring, then forces the button against the inner face of the rim of the hanging edge of said rim displacement of the button.-
In orderto removethe sheath fthe button .or
sheath, the overserving to prevent the sheath isso pressed, as, to overcome the 1 power of the spring-arm and uncover the edge or periphery of the button opposite to saidarm, whereby the sheath may be readily with- V drawn from the head hi the button.
The sides of the arm 0 have lipsEpwhich serve as guards for preventing the displacement of the button, in which case the groove ordepression of the arm, although' advantagoons, is not indispensable. The outer lip may also act as a'haudle to depress or'for'ce back the arm, and, if desired, said arm maybe cut fromthe rim of the sheath, and, when it is properly struck up or shapedit yields and operates similar to that hercin'before stated.
,It will be seen that Ivirtualiycombine two buttons in on'ea feature'wh'ich will be ap preci'ated by members of the army and navy; Grand Army ofthe Republic, &c.,:custom-house oflicials, letter carrie'rs, car-conductors, and otherswho are required wear uniform-buttons ot'their order, service,

ton, so that the shank isrnot afiected, and the operation of buttoning 'anduubuttoning'may; be accomplished without removingthe' sheath.
Hence I have m'ade improvement in the art.
