VALENTINE STIREWALT, OF DAVIDSON COLLEGE, NORTH CAROLINA.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 276,922, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed November 29, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, VALENTINE STIREWALT, of Davidson College, in the countyof Meeklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved double churn. Fig. 2 is an end view of'the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the central part of the same. Fig. 4 is a top view of the churn; and Fig. 5 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale, of the screw-threaded end of one of the hoops and its fastening.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to reciprocatingdasher churns; and it consists in the improved construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of a double churn of that class, as hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A represent the churns of the usual truncated-cone shape, and provided with covers B B and dashers C C, mounted upon staffs D D. The two churn-bodies are connected by a central block, E, which is recessed in both ends E to receive the churns, which are removably fastened to the block by hoops F, the inner ends of which are provided with screw-bolts G, which pass through bolt-holes G in the sides I of the block, and are secured by nuts H. The sides I of the block are beveled in to; ward the center, so as to form better surface for fastening the nuts H upon the bolts G. v
The dashers are opera ted by a double lever, J, to which the dasher-stafts are hinged, pivoted upon'an adjustable standard, K. The lower part of this standard has a series of holes, L, and slides in a vertical recess, M, in
the block, where it may be adjusted by means of a bolt, N, passing through a hole in theside of the block and engaging one of the holes L in the standard. In this way the lever may be raised or lowered to suit the height of the operator. A brace, 0, having a bearing, P, extends obliquely from the standard, the bearing being in. the same height as the fulcrumpin Q of the lever. In this hearing rocks a bar, R, the bifurcated ends S of which are fastened to the lever J, one on each sideof the fulcrum-bol t, while the outer end is bent downward, forming a lever, T, to the bent end of which is removably hinged a handle, U, by which the lever is rocked.
The churns being detachable, one or both of the churns may be operated, and the lever may 7 hoops F, having screw-threaded ends G, nuts H, recessed and beveled block E, adjustable standard K, brace O, havingbearing P, double lever J, having handles V, bifurcated rockshaft B, having lever T, and handle U, all
constructed and combined to operate substanr 'tially as and for the forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VALENTINE STIREWALT.
